The other difficulty with it being at night is that some of the photos would obviously require flash photography. This is VERY distracting!

Yes that really would disturb the filming as well but I think if the fans went too far with shouting and flashing then the team would be able to get rid of them.

I agree. They know the fans are going to be there. If they truly didn't want any of this the fans would have been cordoned way back down the road and not able to see any of it. They just needed to be able to do their work. They smartly had some of those fans become "extras" and sign a non disclosure. Smart move by the production team. That's a win win for those fans and the production unit. It satisfies the fans curiosity and at the same time quells some of the major spoiler stuff (although stuff still does get out). All in all it was fine. I do think some people got a bit overhyped though. Keep Calm and wait for Season 3.

Agree. I have watched many TV shows and movies being filmed. Be respectful. Stand quietly, yes if you want to tweet something to someone that's fine, but don't take photos, don't interefere with the production, don't put spoilers out to people that don't want to see it (or if you do make sure it says "spoilers". The production people know fans are going to be there. It's just common sense. Be a good fan. Respect is the key.

I will say, they know the fans are going to be there and they don't mind that. But yes, shouting, interfering the photos etc are a distraction. But honestly if they didn't want the fans anywhere near it they wouldn't be there. Spoilers are fine (all location shoots involve potential spoilers going out to the public) but the crew and producers know what the deal is. They are just trying to keep people calm so they can do their work. Which is understandable. But some in the fandom are going overboard on the whole "Blah blah you upset Benedict" thing. Please. He's a professional. He's used to this. They just need a bit of calm and that is all.

I am in the U.S. too and I don't think you can unless you do a VPN/Proxy. I'm pretty sure it's blocked for us and not available for streaming.

I wasn't sure whether he was bored or annoyed. It was hard to tell. I didn't feel like he was all the comfortable with it for some reason. That could just be my take on it though.

WB has pushed back There and Back Again to December 17, 2014 instead of July.

For the record: This is a very good thing. More time for editing. It also gives the actors like Martin a breather from having to promote the film up back against Desolation of Smaug in December 2013. Otherwise that would have been a hellish six months of promotion. Mo bettah.

The film only gets better from here. By the time There and Back Again airs, I think Martin may well earn an acting nod. That final scene between him and Thorin...killer.

I'm just curious-- as an American, how are you going to go about seeing S3 in the fall? It won't hit Masterpiece Theater until spring 2014 or so. I would love to be able to find a way to see it on the internet that's not illegal or at least dishonest. You have any ideas?

Maybe the episodes will be available then on some legal internet portals, but I wouldn't hold so much hope.

Yeah there's no way legally. The reason the U.S. does this on PBS is they don't want to have to compete (as a public broadcasting station) with the other U.S. programs debuting at the same time in the fall. So they push it to January when they get a better audience. It makes sense business wise, but it kind of sucks as a fan. If you are above board, you will have to wait...if you are not...well...we won't go there.

Not sure if this belongs here but what do you thinkt about The Hobbit not winning a singel Oscar? I mean, I know, it's just the Oscars and I don't really care about them actually but still... I watched the production blog and after seeng the work on the hair of all of these dwarfs I think they at least deserved an oscar in that category. And I personally think that Moartin Freeman would have deserved a nominatioan as best actor in a leading role as well, but who knows how the jury makes it's decisions anyway...

I greatly appreciate the work that has been done with the Hobbit - I think it was for me one of the greatest cinema experience this year. I only partially agree with you here, though; yes, i think the team deserved an oscar for make-up and production design, too. Special effects was also good, but those from Life of Pi were a lot more stunning.

I'm a big fan of Mr Freeman and I especially loved his performance as Bilbo the Hobbit, taking the primary elements of Bilbo and making his own interpretation - you could feel how much heart and effort he put in there.

To get nominated and win an oscar is more about being able to portray a complex character admirably and some other critical stuff, and Bilbo wasn't that complex of a character. Those actors nominated did a fantastic job with their role, and Daniel-Day Lewis deserved that Oscar.

But hey, I'm already very happy to know that the Hobbit got three nominations for the Oscars. I think it's important to point out - to remind people that being nominated (let alone three times) is already a HUGE accomplishment and demonstrates the fact that people recognize the film's potential.

Oh yeah, and one final thing: maybe they didn't win an Oscar, but they've won the trophy of my own heart. That's how great I think the film was, and no one's going to change my opinion on that.

I think also (in terms of the acting) the Academy views this whole thing as one film. They will ren

Just go with the buddy system. Only one buddy can swoon at a time and the others have to catch and push them back upright. I'm sure it won't be a distraction and you won't be noticed..or anything.

Good point, Susi, since his Smaug is a motion-capture character, so all we'll see of Cumberbatch is his facial expressions and movements. But does anyone know how the Necromancer was done? Is he a live-action character or another motion-cap?

I only read that he is voiced by Benedict so maybe we won't see the character but only hear his voice.

Yeah I don't think there's any Mo Cap with Smaug. There was for necromancer as they needed to use Ben to actually represent the Necromancer himself thus the Mo Cap. Smaug though my understanding is all CG. Plus Mo Cap really I don't think would work (I could be wrong) because the structure of the dragons face isn't anything like a human's (vs Gollum where Andy Serkis did it. Gollum as a humanoid character). Dragonkin is going to have to be CGI but I just love the fact that we will hear Ben and Martin talking to each other in different characters. I can't wait for that!
