He would note the age of my wedding rings and deduce that I am unhappily married, but he would be wrong there. I only say this because it struck me that in ASiP when he made that deduction I looked at my own rings and saw how dull they were.

Based on his statements in ASiP, I think he'd only deduce you were unhappily married if your wedding ring was worn clean on the inside (due to removal) and/or you had other jewelry that was well cleaned. I suspect he'd take the not-cleaned-but-not-oft-removed ring as not really indicative of your happiness with your marriage in either way. He'd probably associate that with the lack of make-up and see cleaning the ring as not something high on your list of things to do, regardless of your feelings toward your marriage.

It'd be reasonable to expect John to have some experience facing situations of this nature. Even if not identical, a similar situation is enough to avoid the irrational responses. As to Sherlock, well.. with his intentionally different personality, assuming he is better at managing that kind of situation than most is reasonable.

An explosive so delicate it would detonate from sliding across the flooring in there would be at a risk for detonation from the wearer's movements. That's not really practical for that sort of vest. There are very stable explosives that could be chosen (such as C4 - though since they're in the UK they might get PE4 instead). While there's a possibility a pulled wire could cause an issue, that's relatively unlikely with the flooring in there. However, water can interfere with circuits and cause the trigger to fire, which would then set off an otherwise more stable explosive. It's not that the explosive would respond to being wet, but the wiring. Being immersed in water is rather different from having water (sweat, rain, whatever) fall on the wiring, so a different response from the device is reasonable.

Oh, that's SOP here. We're only about 40-50 feet above sea level, with rivers and things we call bayous (though I don't think they actually are...), and a rather high water table. Water just... sits around. I've seen it up about 18 inches high in the middle of the street (where the crown is tallest) during the rain, and we're the high ground in the neighborhood!

Are you guys at risk for flash floods, with the saturated ground?

We got some hail, but temps are around 12C and it wasn't big/bad enough to damage any of the cars. There were, of course, the barrage of collisions that comes with a storm around here, but we weren't directly involved in any of that.

Like, we know that Americans are smart so why do American publishers/producers have to dumb down everything before a general release?

Because Americans, in the eyes of the content delivery groups, aren't smart. They're appealing to something that isn't quite the lowest common denominator, but is close. As a group, looking at the bulk of the "bell curve," Americans are dumb, bored, uninterested, or just want their media to be dumb (even if they aren't).

When the American media moguls first decided to bring Top Gear to the US, they rerecorded and redubbed some segments to use American terms, instead of British. It flopped. The second time they tried to bring Top Gear, they left the actual content alone, but trimmed it so it could fit in a 60 minute block (with commercials, so around 42 minutes of show). This was significantly more successful, and the moguls tried showing some in 1.5 hour blocks, where they wouldn't have to trim down the shows to add commercials. These were also successful, and both the 42 minute and full-length reruns continue to run (off and on).

Perhaps, eventually, the "Don't dumb it down for me, thanks," segment will manage to convince the media moguls we're a source of revenue (and easy revenue, since less editing is needed!). Until then, we'll continue to get dumbed down stuff for that silly lowest common denominator. *sigh*

My coworker has an odd complaint. He would like me to tell him when I'm about to pour my tea, if his headphones aren't already on. Why? The sound of the tea pouring into the mug sounds like someone peeing, and he finds it a disturbing noise in a workplace. Frankly, I find this hilarious, but also understandable. I tend to forget, at least so far, but I will try to remind him in the future.

I hate printers. I shouldn't have to know how printers work. I'm a consultant during my day job... Printers are the bane of my existence! I normally don't have to deal with them but our IT guy has taken leave due to a personal crisis and left me to fight with the bloody thing.

I have just tried to print out some attachments (a client thought to send me 42 attachments in one email for her case file.)

I have tried to print these attachments off for her file, and rather than print all the pages the bloody thing has just printed the same thing 42 times!

A printer is making me look like an idiot.

My boss is smirking at me and saying stuff like 'how could you not know how to do that?' Followed very quickly by 'its just paper don't worry' when I shot him a glare that would turn a lesser mortal to ash.

I love technology usually, I love computers, I love phones, I hate printers.

Everyone hates printers. Printers are tools of Basement Cat, out to get us. The Oatmeal has his own commentary on the evil of printers (site is irreverent and not always family friendly, if anyone's not familiar).

In what context? I don't read enough of the fanfic to understand how it's used there. I know .au, as in the TLD, is for Australia, and AU can also stand for astronomical unit. But neither of these seem particularly relevant to Sherlock related fanfic.

Also-at the very end of the episode when Moriarty and our heroes are at the pool, there seem to be more than one sniper. However, the little red laser lights keep jumping around. Are there really snipers there? or is this some elaborate set-up of Moriarty's to make them think that there are snipers around....or are the snipers just nervous?

Nervousness wouldn't cause that. A sniper will be trained to a point where nervousness won't cause that kind of movement. Imagine if it did - how would they hit their targets at thousands of yards effectively if they couldn't maintain a steady fix on a target within the same building (or even a building away, if they'd be shooting through a window)? The snipers could have been told to cause the sight lights to move, to create a mood, or it could be an elaborate set-up. The number makes me think it's an elaborate set-up (perhaps in concert with an actual sniper or two).

I think Moffat is at least as essential to the show as Cumberbatch and Freeman. Like many of you, I've been watching Doctor Who as well. I can typically tell within the first five minutes of an episode if it's a Moffat episode, or if the episode has a different primary writer (this is changing as I've made it to the 11th Doctor, with Moffat now being head writer and executive producer, but the Davies days, I could tell). Moffat's writing style sucks me in and keeps me glued to the TV like few other things do.

The chemistry between Cumberbatch and Freeman is critical to the show, true, as it the quality and care of all of those who contribute. But looking at either, "They never had X person," or "They've lost X person to other projects," without Moffat, I wouldn't have cared about Sherlock.

can you take your bike on the bus?   That's an idea,  isn't it?   Out here  in CA   we got bike racks on our public buses.   Spend your money  on a bikelight--but,  it's not against the law to ride without one.   YET.

I can, but my boyfriend doesn't like me on a bicycle. I've crashed one once on my way to work - needed a trip to the ER and 9 stitches from that - and the drivers around here are idiots. I also believe lights are required at night, here. I only have to walk a few blocks for the bus, less than a mile total, so it's not all that bad. Just... slow compared with a car or motorcycle.

Yay for tea! Is there a chance the quiz is graphics intensive, or makes the processor work harder than the games that use networking? The harder the phone works (in any way, not just networknig) the hotter it'll be.I have a couple of graphics intensive games that make my phone rather hot.

And.... I go from rides in racing cars over the weekend to riding the bus to work! We're down to just one running vehicle between the two of us, and my boyfriend needed it to go to Dallas today. Unfortunately, public transportation here sucks. It'll take me about twice as long to get to work as it does when I take myself, and it'll take about as long as riding my bicycle, with less flexibility. But the bicycle doesn't have lights and it's dark on my way home these days, so the bicycle isn't an option. I'm charging up the kindle, though, and have my headphones for music. The bad part will be waiting in the cold for the bus - it's 5ºC, which in Houston, is cold!

I don't know if it's needed or not. I haven't happened upon the off-topic or non-family-friendly content (particularly before being cleaned up) so can't comment on these specific situations. I'm just commenting in general terms.

Concerning the simple going-off-topic thing my feeling was so far that there always is someone who leads back to the actual topic when posts run out of track. I don't know if anything more is needed here. Deleting any posts or closing a thread will just annoy the members. That would be sad.
And I know what I'm talking about. In another forum they started doing exactly that. Deleted posts and closed "difficult" threads.
The result was that a lot of very nice members left the forum because they got angry or just got unsure what they are allowed to write.
The general vibe/mood in that forum is still sad and everyone is insecure. Still many are considering to leave.

On a different forum I'm on, posts that venture off topic or into not family friendly areas are deleted, and the moderator who deletes them comments in the thread reminding people to stay on topic / family friendly as needed, mentioning they did some clean-up. If this needs to be done multiple times, the thread will be locked, with a similar explanation. Generally, the second clean-up includes a "don't make me close this," and either the third or fourth need for clean-up will result in the thread being locked. PMs are also sent to individual members as needed to explain things. This keeps everyone informed and helps to encourage understanding and working with the moderators. Of course, some people do still find it stifling and leave. Others would find not doing it offensive or find the noise:signal ratio poor - you're going to lose some of the audience with whatever choice is made.

Whatever decision the moderators make, IMO, communication is key. Communicating the basics of what's going on in non-accusatory language allows things to progress.

Is there a way I can completely turn off the fancy WYSIWYG editor? Clicking the "Source" button appears to let me type code, as I prefer, but it still interferes with things. I can't use my option (alt) key as I want - when I try to hit opt+0 (to type a degree symbol), I get an Accessibility Help pop up. I do not want this, I do not need this, I want to be allowed to use my keyboard as my OS is programmed to use my keyboard - it does everything I want and need.

ETA: Oh, good, I think I found it. When I go to my profile and click on Viewing Options, there's a "Show advanced message editor when posting." checkbox. I unchecked it and saved. On my first page load after that, I still saw the advanced editor. But after I clicked a few links and came back, the normal editor was back. Yay!
