Warm welcome and enjoy it here!
Yes, I also was completely lost when I found The Hound of the Baskervilles ...at the age of 11? Don´t know, but it remains my favourite Doyle´s story.

Hello and welcome! I am from another part of the world and I really don´t have any prejudice concerning Texas! What are they, btw?
I adore Jeremy Brett, too....

I managed to watch a couple of matches, women´s semi- final and final. And very glad Marion Bartoli won, although I am not French  but I think that her victory can really serve as a role model for "normal" girls that you can achieve your dream persevering the hard work and effort. I was disgusted by all the criticism about her not being enough pretty and athletic, where do we live when a Wimbledon´s champion is being judged by her appearance?
Congrats Andy Murray, honestly I did not believe he would beat Djokovic, fantastic.

Indeed, it is. It has never been sooo hot in June here, I am afraid.
Neverthless, enjoy your stay, Davina, you come very close to where I live!

I hope I attracted the attention of my niece, she watched S1 and I strongly recommended her S2 hoping she´ll share her impressions with me. She may become hooked on..

I opt for The Creeping Man. I have always found the story bizarre and wasn´t satisfied with the plot development.

Ha, I found another one I have never seen mentioned before: At the beginning of the Thor bridge case, Watson mentiones a couple of cases which most likely will never be cleared up. one of them is the case of "James Fillamore, who stepped into his house to fetch an umbrella and was never seen again" - that is also the name of the second victim in ASiP, the teen who goes back for his umbrella.

Brilliant, Swanpride!

I must say, the reason that I can interact with people in english, isn't the school.
The reason is me being active in english speaking forums and me watching movies and interviews in english.
Our english class is very useless. I mean, teacher asks a question and most of the answers begin with "Ja, also ich denke..." And our teacher is not very consistent when it comes to vocabulary query.
Example?
Teacher: "English word for Abtreibung?" (abortion)
Student: "To make the baby away?"
Teacher: "Right. Next."
I sat there and was like Da faq?

Well, this sounds like a nightmare of a teacher, doesn´t it ? I myself am a language teacher and I can´t figure out what reasons a collegue can have for such an approach.

Actually guys, after seeing your examples of actors you just can't watch... I see your point.

Wolfhound It's so touching to see usernames that are dedicated to other people/places/things. It shows a deep personal connection. Do you work with animals a lot? Or was this a 'one-off'? Plus I like the H.O.U.N.D reference, very nice.

No, I don´t work with animals, but they were always important for me - I grew up amongst them . Te be more explicit, we would have a lot of animals at home when I was younger. But the wolfhound was unique.

Intruguing topic, thanks Mnemosyne.
My username is very easy to guess. But the dog wasn´t mine. Some years ago, I took care of a wolfhound. Because he stays in my heart, (been dead for two years now), I decided to bring it up as a username, partly because of the "hound" part of the word as well. I just thought it would be nice to put together a memory with a Sherlock related notion.
My avatar is one of my favourite places in the mountains where I like to hike.
My signature is a quotation of my favourite author, Michel Houellebecq.

Well, I have already posted something about it but I guess this is the right thread. The Czech elements in The Great Game represent a nod to the canon.  The Czech republic is no more called Bohemia, but its western part still is known as Bohemia in western Europe  -mostly. There are some Czech/Bohemian elements in ACD work, like the future Bohemian king affair in The Scandal in Bohemia. Prague, the capital, is mentioned as a source of a specific drug in the Adventure of The Creeping Man. So the provenience of the paper and the name of the lady (Mrs. Wenceslas) seem to be a nod to the canon to me.

I caught cold when I was around 12 years old and had nothing to read except some books I had read many times before.  I made a thourough search in a bookcase and found The Hound of The Baskervilles. And that was it. I have SH periods in my life, years when I rewatch Jeremy Brett, reread the canon  and years when I don´t like to. Still it remains one of my favourite crime stories writers.

For me, he remains the definitive Holmes, such a brilliant portrayal of the eccentric Victorian gentleman.
By the way, I have always wanted to ask a native speaker - why does he pronounce the  "r" in such a specific way? It´s an alveolar "r", isn´t it?

As much as I adore Benedict's Sherlock, Jeremy will always be whom I picture when I read the original stories. Regarding his pronunciation of the letter 'r', I believe that it may be in part due to his rhotacism. Although he had surgery to correct this speech impediment whilst a teenager, I think he remained overly conscious of his pronunciation even into adulthood. Alternatively, it could be because he wished to portray Holmes's speech in a more eccentric manner than the norm. After all, his pronunciation of the letter was not always the same.

Oh, Amara, thank you very much for your explanation! I did not know the fact about the surgery. But it definitely sounds quite excentric - in English.

Hello! You can introduce yourself in the introduction thread, if you would like to.
The Czech elements in the BBC series are an obvious nod to the canon since there are mentioned at least twice in the original stories. At first, the Scandal in Bohemia, quite obviously, although I am afraid ACD got it wrong, all that stuff about a Czech king- quite ridiculous for the period. Then there is another story mentioning the capital Prague being a source of a drug for a respectable professor.
Wenceslas is indeed a typical Czech first name, Vaclav. ¨
As far as the pronunciation is concerned, I didn´t remember any wrong features, I have to listen for it to capture!
