Not sure it's a thing about time limits. I think it's to do with traffic. I've had an occasion where I was trying to post something in a particular thread at the same time, someone else was trying to make a post in the same thread. If we both press submit at the same time, I think it will only let one post through, because when I went back to check on it, my post disappeared, at the same time, a post by someone else who had been trying to submit at the same time as me, appeared.

The thing that comes across very strongly, particularly in the scene with the CCTV cameras and the scene in the warehouse is Mycroft's sense of menace. John is able to stand up to him but the menace is still there.

Which makes you question how insufferable Sherlock would be if he were given Mycroft's powers. Sherlock chooses to operate alone & is already difficult enough as a one man band. Give him the secret service &... Though I doubt anybody would work for Sherlock for very long - he would have a very high turnover of staff. Probably why it suits Mycroft more

The scene with Mycroft & John in the basement is my all time most favourite scene - not just in this episode, but in the whole series

I watched the episodes out of order (HOUND, Scandal, Study in Pink, etc...) so I already knew that the mystery man was Mycroft - but even coming into the scene the wrong way around, I could see that they were trying to make him look like Moriarty.

This is a scene where Martin really gets to shine as John. Most of the time, Sherlock takes centre stage & John is added as an after thought but here, all eyes are on him & he holds himself beautifully. Him & Lestrade are very well acted but under appreciated due to the nature of the characters.

summary: Lestrade and Donovan make a bet regarding Sherlock and John. It doesn't take long for the majority of the Yard to get involved.

Superman by Five for Fighting (re: series 2 finale)

I can't stand to fall.
I'm not that naive
I won't wait to talk.
I hope you'll remember me.

I'm more than a fraud, I'm more than a freak
I'm more than a headline on this news-less week
And it's not easy to be me.

I could keep going, but I think you get what I'm trying to say Anyway, I think the song fits but would need to be adjusted for lyrics.

I really want to see an adaptation of this story because it's my all time most favourite Holmes story in the world! Wonder if it will feature in any of the future episodes. The name has been referenced in earlier episodes but not the narrative.

Also, if this episode was a well laid plan, he would have no reason to intervene would he? Sherlock may indeed not have had an "hour of need".

I'm not denying that Mycroft might be involved. I'm just saying that within the context of the episode - remember the other characters don't know that Sherlock survived & we're supposed to believe that he was in grave danger (or at least, we're to believe that he has allowed himself to be in great danger) on the rooftop.

Within this context, Mycroft could have helped but he chose not to partly because he knows that Sherlock won't accept his help, but more likely because he still believes as Sherlock did until Moriarty told him otherwise, that there is a digital pass code that can cause the next Y2K & the only way to get the code out of Moriarty is to surrender Sherlock Holmes to him. Just makes you think - what kind of brother does that? Given the choice between potential chaos & the safety of his brother, Mycroft chooses to surrender his brother. It's not wrong (actually, it's a very noble
decision) but it's not what most people would do. If a normal person had a choice between saving the world & saving their loved ones, they would choose saving their loved ones - that is the natural thing to do. Sherlock talks about not giving a damn & only caring about the problem but Mycroft is the one who actually lives this philosophy. When faced with the choice between the world & his friends, Sherlock still chose his friends.

He's supposed to be having his brother under 24/7 surveillance but doesn't help when the assassins move in on Sherlock's friends. If Sherlock could figure it out, Mycroft would have known ages ago (he's like the powers that be on the Bourne films). It's not that he doesn't know - his lack of surprise when reading about it in the papers indicates that he could see it coming. Why doesn't he intervene? He doesn't even need to show up in person, the boys in black suits are more than willing to do the work for him.

It's interesting to see that he doesn't try to help. It's not that he doesn't care about his brother. He does care. But he chooses to not do anything. I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind it. Same as when Sherlock says that "Moriarty chose to be in prison", Mycroft chose to not help Sherlock in his hour of need. I know that there are theories about him being in on Sherlock's death and possibly helping the illusion along, but in the context of the episode where nobody knows that Sherlock survives, what would be Mycroft's reasons for staying out of the affair?

Just rewatching the first episode & laughing my head off at the number of "gay" references to John.

The first time he meets Mrs Hudson:

Mrs Hudson: There's another room upstairs if you'll be needing two rooms.
John: Of course we'll be needing two.
Mrs Hudson: Oh, don't worry. Mrs Turner next door has got married ones.

In the cafeteria where they are waiting for the taxi (they don't know he's the killer yet).

Vendor: Anything you want on the house for you & your date.
John: I'm not his date.
Vendor: I'll get a candle for this table, it's more romantic.
John: I'm not his date.

later in the same scene:

John: You're unattached just like me.
Sherlock: John, I think you should know that I consider myself married to my work & while I'm flattered by your interest, I'm really not looking for anything.
John: No (big wide eyes) no.

It's just really funny because in that episode, no one questions Sherlock's sexuality but almost everyone, when they meet John for the first time in the company of Sherlock, always assumes that he's gay It's like being with Sherlock feminises John or something because when they see him minus Sherlock, they don't think he's gay quite so quickly.

How did he know there was a gun in the safe? He spends most of the scene in Irene's house trying to get her to open it. Then when he succeeds with the pin code, he immediately ducks like he's known all along that it was booby trapped. So he's worked really hard to open something that will try to kill him?

Hi,

I sort of went the opposite way to normal. I was like, I don't need to introduce myself, I'll just jump right in. So I did. I started reading & posting, & then about a week later, I decided that maybe I should say hi. So good day to all from er... Paul Keating likes to call us the "butt end of the world". Not very flattering but I think the description is apt enough.

Character Analysis » Which actors best match their characters? » September 7, 2012 3:51 am

I have a feeling this might not be in the right place, so feel free to move this post into another forum if that's the case. Also, if this topic has already been covered, please feel free to delte or lock this thread.

I get the feeling that Benedict & Martin are playing each other on the shows, they are so different in real life. On the show, Sherlock is the outspoken/funny one & John is the more mild-mannered/serious one. In interviews, they are the complete opposite. Martin is absolutely hilarious & Benedict is more caring - he keeps giving complements to everyone else in the room like he's afraid of offending someone

So my question is, which actors (leading or supporting) best match the characters that they play (major or minor) in terms of personality or quirks (dress/speech/etc...) in real life?
