I assumed that line was purely in recognition of it being a danger night for Sherlock lapsing back to his drug habit.
Yes but if Sherlock didn't care about Irene why would it be a danger night? Why would Mycroft warn John to stay close etc? It was obvious to them all Sherlock was acting out of character.

I think he really did fall in love (as "in love" as he ever will). He way his tone changed when he saw the present on the mantle, the way his hands were shaking when he opened it. And then, of course, the way he looked absolutely crushed when he was walking back to his apartment on New Year's Eve...he was in love. He didn't know what was going on on the plane, and he was full of revenge when he figured out the code...but then he couldn't bear for her to die, so he saved her.
Mycroft's statement of "My brother has the mind of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What can we deduce about his heart?" to me, shows that Sherlock is more innocent and naive than we like to think about him. Love really throws him off his game.
sj4iy I think you're quite right...Also, John's reaction "Did he take the cigarette?...Shit!" that seemed to say it all to John.

This is an interesting debate and it's very tricky to know for certain. Perhaps Sherlock was in love, in his own way - the sad music, the not eating? He acted like he was love sick.
Then, he acted like he didn't know he had been played when confronted by Mycroft on the plane but perhaps he was playing along? Sherlock seems to come to a realisation as he sits in the chair at Myrcroft's house (???) while Irene blabs on about Moriarty etc, it seems he realised the code and then knows Irene has not won because she's fallen for him and let him know it. A weakness in his book.
As for saving her, well, it seems Sherlock does have a heart and while he let Irene stew for several months in her own guilt and regret he bailed her out because - as his sort of equal, he likes the idea of her being "out there" as someone else on this thread pointed out.

Saw this on Facebook today and I nearly imploded, I was like "CURLS! VIOLIN!" *dies*. My 10 year old son thought it was hilarious.

Yes, I've been thinking about this today and I remembered Sherlock's utter surprise and the whole Richard Brook thing...hmmm...

Good. God. I'm mean...that was amazing to read and the blogger makes it all fit but is there really so much going on between the lines? Would the writers make it so complicated? I hope so though! I LOVE the Rumplestiltskin idea and the idea and that Moriarty chose to steal that particular painting...I did find it odd how Sherlock started appearing at press conferences etc as it seems out of character and this theory explains it. I hope the writers have seen this!
A Scandal In Belgravia » Irene's nude scene Sherlock & John » June 18, 2013 9:21 pm |
Irene was using all the tricks of her trade to dominate the situation. The whole "knowing where to look" thing I think is Irene's way of acknowledging John is no stranger to women whereas Sherlock is.
It's fitting that the key code is Irene's measurements and all that Sherlock noted was the technicalities of her nakedness...nice touch by the writers.
I think Sherlock's flustered behaviour was the surprise at Irene's nakedness, his body does betray him sometimes (as noted in THoB) but he quickly wrestles control to be back on top form.
Irene is a superb dominatrix - the dog collar in the teeth is awesome lol, and the whip...this role is all she knows and she uses it to get what she wants from Sherlock for Moriarty. However, Irene ends up falling for Sherlock (who can blame her) and whether he returns her feelings is up for debate. My thing is - why did he go to such trouble to ensure her safety if he cared nothing for her? He composed music for her too and acted a bit lovesick...I think Sherlock was impressed by Irene and attracted to her, but being him, he did not seek out a relationship with her. I do hope we see Irene again.

Welcome!!! It's funny how many people watch one ep, gobble up the rest and come running to this place to gush about the brilliance. I totally did that very recently, so welcome to a bunch of fab, like minded folk .
General Sherlock Discussion » Silly pictures of associations only Sherlockians can understand » June 18, 2013 5:53 pm |
Love this, we could do a Sherlock version...
To do:
skulk around in expensive dressing gown
practice violin at uneartly hours
play violin badly to annoy Mycroft when he drops by unannounced
turn up collar on coat to look cool with cheekbones
shoot the wall
peer into microscope when people attempt to converse with me but ignore them using the excuse of "working"
piss off most of Scotland Yard
talk to John whether or not he's actually there
am sure you can all add to this

You know you're obsessed with Sherlock when...
you swear death to all supermarkets when none of your local stores currently stock the DVD boxset *SEETHE*
you spend your zumba classes wondering how Sherlock works out - I mean, the guy is toned and yet he doesn't seem to make any time for exercise...You also wonder what Sherlock would make of Zumba...
you keep seeing references where there aren't any - a van saying "Homes" etc
on your re-watch of TRF you meticulously examine Sherlock's face for clues to what he is thinking in order to be the one who cracks the damn answers to his fake death
you blub like a fool when watching TRF before the damn opening titles have even ran
you actually feel withdrawls when you don't have any episode lined up to watch
Introductions Please... » Thoroughly Sherlocked » June 17, 2013 9:10 pm |
Lol, your intro almost matches mine - have been a fan about a fortnight and am totally in love with Sherlock himself, the whole show and Benedict. It's bringing me a lot of happiness and this place is awesome! xxxx
The Reichenbach Fall » Why do people find this episode so emotional/hard to watch? » June 15, 2013 9:45 pm |
What kills me too, is John. Rewatched it tonight for the second time (hey, I've only been a fan a week and a half) and that scene with his therapist - shit, I was a mess before the opening titles started rolling...I then blubbed like a fool as John sat gazing at Sherlock's empty chair and then at his grave. I did watch everything so much closer this time especially the last 20 mins trying to gleen clues from Sherlock and what he was planning.
Not sure where to add this comment but - Sherlock acts too "dumb" on the rooftop when talking to Moriarty right up until he starts laughing and then steps off the ledge - then it's like having the true Sherloc back... Damn the writers, we need to know every detail of that plan in ep 1 of series 3 or I shall implode.
The Reichenbach Fall » Why not Molly? » June 15, 2013 9:27 pm |
I've just re-watched TRF and amongst the scenes which took me surprise the first time around were the ones with Molly. When Molly tells Sherlock how he looks sad when John's not looking etc totally stunned me. I guess I was being a bit mean to her like Sherlock and my reaction was "Oh my, Molly said something insightful for a change!" and I loved her for it. Molly does notice, she does see and when she offers Sherlock help I think he realises she is someone worth his time. I shall be very interested in series 3 to discover how Molly's helping him changes their relationship, afterall, she's a trained professional and I want to see her stand up for herself more and be recognised as the educated woman she is. As for "Why not Molly?" - protection for sure.

General Benedict Appreciation » What Shakespearean roles would you like to see him in? (Not Hamlet!) » June 12, 2013 9:05 pm |
Dear lord, I really want him in this role now...especially after the re-watch of SiB, he's so commanding in that ep esp when Mrs Hudson is hurt.

Even though it shouldn't, as I get to grips with this fandom, it amazes me how mental the Sherlock fandom is as in how widespread! It's gone global. It's just mind blowing.
