I like it how he really looks like Sherlock even without curls.

I have to contradict: I insist on curls *ggg*

No, and my vote increased the no-choice to 34% :-).

Shipping special characters has something to do with identification with certain characters, I think. And a lot with your head canon. As for me, I can identify with Molly a lot and I like her in the show although she doesn't have much screen time. And in my head I imagine her and Sherlock sharing a special connection which can maybe lead to romantic feelings.
But it is no kind of must have for the show.

Mark embodies a perfect Mycroft - and a perfect cliche Britain man, I think - at least in my eyes :-).

I know I've said this before, but the reason sex is important is that without it, we all pretty much see the same thing.   And without sex there's no Johnlock, is there?  If there is no sexual attraction between them, then there's "just" the special, loving friendship that we all see.  And (I know I'm repeating myself again, sorry, but it does keep coming up), that's not because sex is the focus of a relationship, necessarily, but it's what changes the nature of a relationship (from friends to lovers).

I could see them happily being together without sex - that's not what they want from each other, I don't think.  John does want sexual relationships, but he could continue to have those.  I don't think he ever craved or planned a family life before Mary's unexpected pregnancy, so I could see him living without that.     I don't think it needs to be a sexual relationship to be a fulfilling one.  It's a different kind of thing.

In the Mumbai interview, Mark said that they thought ACD realised he made a mistake by marrying off John, and that he needed him back at Baker Street.   I think that means that they won't be making the same  mistake and have a solution in mind.

I couldn't agree more! Sex IS the one thing that changes a relation - not always completely, but rather overwhelmingly. And as long as Sherlock and John don't end up in bed together I myself wouldn't call their relationship "Johnlock".
Don't get me wrong, I share your opinion: They LOVE each other - but to me that's not equal to a romantic/sexual relation, it's just something different.

And, by the way, I don't see John ever being unhappy with Mary! Certainly, he is "pissed off", but he truly loves her and is happy being together with her. I don't see any sign of suppressed homosexual/bisexual feelings ...

But that's exactly it, Susi.  If that team wanted to do Johnlock they would do it.  It wouldn't be hidden away.   I mean, even Private Life was much more overt than Sherlock.   Why on earth would they make something that's more repressed than Private Life, when apparently Billy Wilder regretted that it couldn't have been more open?   In the example you mention (Moffat's writing for Dr Who), the couple are clearly and openly in a same-sex relationship (the fact that it's same-sex isn't an issue, or commented on) and share a kiss, in a children's TV programme - it's not hidden or coded but completely out there.    Whereas in Sherlock, there isn't even a scene as explicit as the one in Private Life  ("the answer is yes - you are being presumptuous").

But where would be a fun in that if they stated it so openly? Moftiss love to play with their audience and to remove all the ambiguity away from the story would rob it of most of its charm.

Liberty: Why would the team have to announce it from the beginning? What if Johnlock is one essential part of the narrative arc in "a show about a detective"? They did not tell us that Mycroft was not Moriarty or that Mary was a killer either. It was developed within the narrative - in Mary's cases we got hints, as Steven has stated - and yet the audience was surprised. I am sure the same thing will happen with people looking back to all the signs of love between Sherlock and John and say "I saw but I did not observe".

Short answer: because the way it has been set up would make sexual orientation "the issue".

They've presented John as straight - ALL his partners have been women.   They could have made one or more partners men, or made them all men, or not shown any partners at all, and any of th

I'm joining you here as a (past) huge X-files fan when I was at school! I can remember that I discussed every episode with some school mates after it had been aired on German TV (was it PRO 7?). Mulder and Scully made me read my first fanfiction ever and I really liked the idea of a relationship between them.
Has anyone of you watched the two movies? I think in the second one they WERE a couple somehow, weren't they? Gosh, it's toooooo long ago ...

The reason I say Sherlock would dislike me is not to degrade myself in any way. But when I read the starter post of this thread, I was reminded of something Benedict said in an interview. I'm unable to find the interview so I don't remember the exact quote. But it was something about people tending to romantizing Sherlock and going "Oooh, would love to meet and talk with him!", when all Sherlock would do would be to deduce their innermost fears and secrets, say it out loud rude and coldy, and then already be bored with them.

There is, literally, only a handful of people in this world that keeps Sherlock interest for more than five seconds. I don't delude myself into thinking I*m one of them.

This thing Ben said strikes my curiosity.. sometimes I think "bring it on, I know my fears and shortcomings already and would have a thing or two to say about you, too.."  Could be interesting.

On the other hand I think Benedict just referred to fawning fangirls approaching Sherlock in this interview.. judging from how he treated "normal" people like Sarah, Soo Lin, Amanda etc I guess he might as well be decent, though not overly interested, if you somehow got to meet him. For him to actively dislike you you probably have to be reeally annoyingly slow, stupid and/or entitled..

In Sherlock's eyes 99,9% of mankind is like that ...

Interesting point I have not thought about. But I assume that Mycroft would only care for John as Sherlock's friend. He does not seem to care for other people in general, Sherlock is an exception.

Exactly my point of view!
Mycroft wouldn't even have noticed John if he hadn't become Sherlock's flatmate and friend. I think he appreciates him as Sherlock's friend and becuase of the opportunity to turn Sherlock into a "better" man.

Oh, I'm not troubled with it either - I just like thinking about it from time to time, but I don't have any sleepless nights :-). A nice expression, "to be at peace with The Fall", by the way. I also agree that we will never ever get a fully satisfying explanation by Moftiss.
