Yes. Snow. What sounds like people singing a Christmas carol. John asking the newspapers guy how's the Blue Carbuncle going (and The Blue Carbuncle is a Christmas story), and then that same guy shouts "Merry Christmas, Mr Holmes!"
 

The bit of dialogue that gave  the biggest clue to it being Christmas for me was

Lestrade. 'Just to wish you the complements of the season..............Merry Christmas.'
Sherlock. 'Merry Christmas.'
John. 'Merry Christmas.'
Mary. 'Merry Christmas.'

The next 30 seconds of that video will break your heart

After  20 minutes you think this is going to be a bit predictable with a typical hollywood plotline, And then it subtly changes into something else.

Good film.
 

30 seconds into the show every television in the country goes dark. And we spend the next 90 minutes listening to a criminal mastermind repeating the words 'Did you miss me?' over a blank screen.

And every one of us watches to the very end.

It was easier to spot back in the day as the ink would be smudged, as your hand went over the recently applied ink; rather than away from it.

Tonight on BBC2 at 2000. In amongst the flowers, flowers, and more flowers are interviews with Benedict Cumberbatch and Wanda Ventham. Oh, and some more flowers.

Think you have to define 'fans'. There is a proportion of fandom on sites such as this one who believe that theories have been lifted from such forums. I don't buy into that.
But what did happen was that the Fall took on a life of its own and it made headlines in the national press for a considerable time This is what I believe the writers tapped into. In the same way that Sherlocks love life made front page headlines in HLV. Sherlock lives in the modern world. It would be difficult; and somewhat odd, for that side of things to be ignored. The guy is a good looking celebrity sleuth who solves high profile cases. He can't do that operating in a bubble.
