Oh yes LOL! I actually heard the song recently and of course I couldn't help but think of the beginning of ASiB. The resolution was a bit of a cop out but the ringtone really did fit Jim all too well LOL!

It is 'okay' compared with the Granada series.

I love Granada as well but I do not compare either series to each other because one is set in Victorian days and the other in present day. Now Jeremy Brett is my Holmes and always will be but Benedict Cumberbatch is brilliant in his own right so I'd have to say he is my second favorite.

I'll thorugh my hat in and say I'd love to see some of the other (detective) inspectors too -- although I do love Lestrade (and Rupert Graves)! I think the one I want to see the most is Gregson especially if Lestrade can be around and they follow canon because Lestrade and Gregson do not get along

I'm not trying to be mean, but I sometimes wonder how much his personal struggles add to the myth around him.

For me that is not the case - I watched most of the Granada series before I learned more about Jeremy Brett's struggles with manic depression and the loss of his second wife. It was and still is his acting I fell in love with from the moment I began watching and when I watch the episodes I feel like I am seeing Holmes being brought to life before my very eyes!

Don't get me wrong, the Granada Series is really good, and Brett was great. But when it comes to classic adaptations, I think the Russian series is a little bit better because it has a better understanding that it is still an adaptation.

Well I have given the Russian version a shot and to be honest what I saw didn't compell me to watch any further than I did. I need to give it a try as so many have sung its praises but I think I hated having to read the subtitles as I don't speak Russian and the pace for me was a touch slow.

Sorry.

I dunno, I do struggle with Jeremy Brett. I just find his story so heartbreakingly sad really, such an example of how far we've come as a society in terms of acceptance of sexuality and mental health problems.

I really love his portrayal of Holmes, they are the ones I grew up with. I think, had he been SH now, he'd have been even better. To an extent Sherlock benefits from our increasingly emotional literacy and acceptance. But the sacrifices he made to do this awesome portrayal just feel so very sad somehow. It destroyed his mental health and, I'm guessing, may have had an impact on how open he could be about his sexuality (he was bisexual but after his second wife died he had no public relationships-of course fine if he just had no relationships but so sad if he felt he couldn't celebrate other relationships in the same way after he becane known for Holmes). Its very mixed for me, this.

Somehow that lines, "don't make people into heroes, John,", really resonated with me as regards Brett. Someone who wasn't allowed to be imperfect :-(

I can't quite agree with your thoughts completely because from everything I have read and indeed the interviews I can find with Jeremy himself seem to at least somewhat confirm what I am about to say. You think he was not free to have any public relationships because of the fact he was so well-known for playing Holmes the last decade of his life and how that would be be impacted if people knew about his private life. I don't believe that was the case as to why there were no known relationships for him because I honestly believe he never ever got over the loss of his second wife.

By all accounts and indeed like I said in the interviews I've seen/listened to, there's a change that comes over him when she is brought up. Again from all accounts he adored and loved her so much and from what I can gather, it sounds like to me that she fully had claimed his heart, so much so I think t

One of my favorite bits from TGG is when John finds the head in the fridge because his reaction to it just cracked me up the first time I saw it and I still chuckle whenever I watch that part now

I like how they're not imitating Ziva… still a competent agent, but more of a analyst thinker, tied to an actual twisty case with long-running roots/implications that brings them all together. But still need more Franks cameos….

Yes, I am also relieved that they're not going to copy Ziva just like they didn't copy Kate with Ziva. I'll always miss Ziva but the door is wide open for her to make an appearance some day and I hope Cote will eventually do one if asked!

And I just realized I became a fan in Sept 2011 because I remember watching half of Season 9 live and all of Season 10 live -- Season 11 is my 3rd live season for NCIS!

The Reichenbach Fall » How to survive the fall and the things out of character...... » November 7, 2013 7:27 am

I have always been convinced and of the belief that while Sherlock had things in place in case his meeting with Jim went south, he did not intend for John to be there when he stepped off that roof -- the fake call that Mrs Hudson had been shot is one thing that makes me think this. As I said I don't think he meant John to be there but once he was he had to go through with it and did have things in place that would convince John he was dead because if John believed he was, then Moriarty's people would believe it too!

I always thought they gave Lestrade the first name Greg because the other main policeman in the books is Gregson. I assumed they had combined the two to become Greg Lestrade.

Actually Gregson is mentioned once in the BBC series and it comes in TRF when the chief superintendent is chewing Lestrade out over Sherlock.... you know after Donovan and Anderson tell on him? You have to listen very carefully but when Lestrade says other DIs have used Sherlock he starts to say Gregson's name.

Also he moved John's wound around in the book. Sometimes he was shot in the leg, other times in the shoulder. Hense why in the BBC series John has a limp but was shot in the shoulder. Another lovely nod to the original text.

Yeah another example of Conan Doyle not remembering what he had already written

Ah, The Reichenbach Fall. My absolute favorite episode in the Sherlock Series. I don’t think I have ever been so emotionally devastated by a television show in my life then when I was watching this episode.

It’s not Sherlock’s fall that tears me up inside, its John’s reaction to his fall that does it.

Me too.

When we first meet John he is a broken and lost man. He feels he no longer has a purpose. Then he meets Sherlock and voila! he has purpose again. And as the series continues we see the relationship between these two blossom into something that is just… well… perfect. In the end John cares about Sherlock more than anything else in the world. Sherlock *IS* John’s world. Without Sherlock John is back to having no purpose. He is once again floating through life lost and broken.

John doesn’t just watch his best friend jump from the roof, he watches his world jump from the roof. Everything that matters to John has just vanished. And it’s Martin Freeman’s performance of this that rips my heart out. John’s reaction is so utterly heartbreaking. No matter how many times I have seen this scene I still cry, every time, because of John. I just want to take him into my arms and tell him that it’s ok, that Sherlock will be back. *wipes away a tear* Man, I can’t even write about this scene without getting all teary eyed.

I tell you Martin's acting at the end of TRF is the reason why he edges out Benedict and Andrew Scott for most brilliant. He utterly tore my heart out and I cry every time I watch the very ending. Oh I cry at the scene where Sherlock jumps and during their conversation but the tears really don't come until John is standing at Sherlock's grave alone and he is asking for one more miracle from his best friend. I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to step into the scene, and just hug John and then walk across the graveyard to smack Sherlock upside the head and say "How could you hurt

The Scandal was the first one, and I didn't like it much. I enjoyed Dancing men far better, but the problem is that the story is not one of my favourites in canon

But then when you read the canon first and see it that way, I know seeing an onscreen version can disappointe greatly. For example I read The Hunger Games first and I was highly disappointed with last year's movie version of it!

Yes, that's it. I watched those Granada episodes not only because of Brett, but also coz of my curiosity to see the canonon screen. But then my interest cooled down as I was familiar with the stories and had my own mental images But I think, I should also try Speckled Band. It is one of my favourite stories as well

It appears that Scandal may not be the way to win some folks over to Brett!Holmes

And ah I can understand why you didn't care for Dancing Men if you don't care for that one in the original!

The Speckled Band is one of two episodes I've watched more than others and JB is most definitely at his best in that one, which is why I have watched that one probably more than two dozen times!

He really was so very beyond brilliant and I cannot see anyone else coming close in their portrayal of the Victorian Holmes!

I have wondered why I'm not that much interested in Brett's Holmes. It may be that since I have already formed a my own vision of Victorian Holmes, it's hard for me to replace him with anyone including Brett, who had portrayed him very closely. It's true RDJ also plays Victorian Holmes, but, however I like his portrayal, I know it's different and not the same. I like RDJ's portrayal coz of its entertaining aspect.

Hmm I tried to win a good friend of mine over to Brett too and had her start with Scandal. That was a mistake because I had won her over to Sherlock first and she just didn't like the Granada episode. However I did convince her to watch The Speckled Band and she said with that one she began to see what I see in Jeremy Brett as Holmes.

The Dancing Men is one of my favorites and for me it's one JB's best episodes as Holmes so I say hmm as your reaction.

Sorry, I had to rant.
I don't care that Elementary exists.  I don't care that people enjoy it more than Sherlock.  What burns my biscuits is the Elementary fans, who act like they have some sort of right to rip the BBC show, Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Moffit, Gatiss, and everyone else involved to shreds just because some very vocal BBC fans felt that Elementary was ripping off the BBC series, and it wasn't unfounded.  If someone in a BBC vs CBS discussion, expresses why they don't like Elementary, the Elementary fans jump all over the BBC fans and accuse them of being bitter BBC fans.

First thank you, josabby, for posting this because I am one of those who has been ripped apart on Tumblr (had anonymous F-bombs hurled at me) just because I dare express my views on Elementary. Yes I watch and yes I like it sometimes but mostly those times come when the writers leave SH canon alone because I usually hate the twists they have on it i.e. Irene/Moriarty for example!

I agree with everything said here, especially about JLM and Lucy Liu not having any chemistry... they've gotten better as the show has gone on but in the first season they had zero, zlich, nada to speak of whereas the chemistry between Benedict and Martin was evident the moment John steps into the lab and Sherlock asks him "Afghanistan or Iraq?". I have used that scene to win people over to Sherlock because as I said the chemistry between them is just amazing from the start!

Also Elementary fans have nothing to crow about because if everyone will recall the producers of that show originally wanted to Americanize Sherlock but were denied permission by the BBC so their show was born instead! If Sherlock is such crap as the Elementary fans seem to think then why did its producers seek to Americanize in the first place?

Last minor thing... they set Elementary in NYC - BIG DEAL! To me any so-called Sherlock Holmes not set in his beloved London, whether i

For me, he remains the definitive Holmes, such a brilliant portrayal of the eccentric Victorian gentleman.
By the way, I have always wanted to ask a native speaker - why does he pronounce the "r" in such a specific way? It´s an alveolar "r", isn´t it?

As much as I adore Benedict's Sherlock, Jeremy will always be whom I picture when I read the original stories. Regarding his pronunciation of the letter 'r', I believe that it may be in part due to his rhotacism. Although he had surgery to correct this speech impediment whilst a teenager, I think he remained overly conscious of his pronunciation even into adulthood. Alternatively, it could be because he wished to portray Holmes's speech in a more eccentric manner than the norm. After all, his pronunciation of the letter was not always the same.

No doubt you are right, Amara, about why Jeremy pronounced the letter R the way he did but I for one love the way he would roll them when he said them! And yes I hear his voice in my mind when I am reading the stories which is a real treat when I read the stories thatt were never turned into episodes for the Granada series!
