The Hounds Of Baskerville » The Password » July 22, 2014 11:00 pm |
It felt right to me. Real life isn't perfect either. It's full of mistakes people make.
I once accidently logged out on a work computer, without having the password. I did exactly what Sherlock did and thought about the person who set the password up. Got it right on the third try - not because I'm brilliant, but because the password was way to obvious and plain. It happens in real life all the time, and I'm pretty sure it happens also in high up places... if it wouldn't, there wouldn't be scandals all over the news every few weeks. For me the scene worked perfectly
edit: oops, old-ish thread nevermind
Character Analysis » Is Sebastian Moran the Moran You Were Expecting? » July 22, 2014 10:45 pm |
I'm not expecting anything anymore I'm just waiting for the surpriiise...
no, seriously: I think Marys story isn't done, and I think whatever more is there to come, will come from her end. Maybe there is a Mary-Moran connection somewhere in the past - they worked in the same business, even if not on the same sides... possible they've met, possible Mary knows far more villains than we would expect. From everything CAM hinted at, I think Mary's file would definitely include some first class terrorist hunting. I think Moran being an ingredient of the whole Mary character cocktail just shows even clearer that Mary's past cannot be put aside so easily. For me, it's a hint that she really belongs to "both" sides - the dark and the light, and that makes her an intruiging character, and also makes me dislike the kind of smooth end to her story in HLV - just doesn't feel right to me. I bet there's more to come, it can't be only CAM who got to know things about her.
The Empty Hearse » Violence at the reunion » July 22, 2014 10:32 pm |
For some reason, the scene didn't bother me the first time I watched it. This is why: I think if somebody you loved dearly comes back to you after you thought you've lost him forever, you'd need some reassurance he is really there. Violence is not a concept I agree with at all, but I can understand the motivation to get physically close... not just shouting, but actually touching. It shows the emotional impact far more than anything else, I'd say. The "proper" way to make this contact would be a hug I imagine (like Sherlock and Lestrade had), but with all the pain John suffered, and Sherlock's really shit way of getting the news across, I don't think that is any option for John in this situation. So he slips into the only action that will bring him physically close to Sherlock - hitting him. I don't like it, but I can understand it... that words aren't enough. He should keep his temper in check, he definitely should - but it's a human reaction, as sad as that might be, and I think that's why the show uses it. It happens in real life, so it can be used in television... I'm just saying that for me, I didn't think that was bad writing.
I think violence is not the right kind of communication - ever. But I think it does make a difference if there is a power balance or not: John and Sherlock are two men of equal strengths, and for all John knows at this moment (he doesn't know about the injurys and the things Sherlock went through), Sherlock could just fight back. (Remember the scene in ASiB when Sherlock asks John to hit him? They do hit each other, but it's perfectly clear nobody is abusing the other - they are an equal match, both can defend themselves).
Sherlock is quite ready to use violence if needed, only it doesn't bother us as long as the "bad guys" are on the receiving end - because we know they are capable of exactly the same. It bothers us that Sherlock drugs a pregnant woman (Mary in HLV), but this woman shoots men in cold blood - we are biased in a way, when

It's fun to read here
besleybean, probably cops outside bigger cities do things like that. Never happened to me. It's very kind. So I was wrong
Liberty, WHY do you want it to be true that I drown my poor books? :D But, you're lucky: I really do.
I love books though. It's not that I want to destroy them. It started with a romance novel that had red coloured pages (not the whole pages, just outside on the edges - I don't know what it's called, with old books it's sometimes gold colour)... and I accidently dropped the book while reading in the bath. The red colour spread all over the pages and after drying it had a pretty cool "used" look with fluffy pages, a smell of bath soap and the red colour spreading everywhere It felt like "art", very special and fascinating.
I only drown books that I love dearly. It's like a ritual, a rite-de-passage, making the book truly mine. Have dropped four or five books into the bath so far - on purpose. (and one or two accidently...) I won't part with them ever. With english paperbacks, you shouldn't drop the spine into the water though - the glue isn't really water resistent So it's more like page-dipping with these. Do I sound crazy? :D
I also decorate my favourite books with decopatch to make them unique
Still curious about the hello-kitty pillow...
Meet The Members » True of false: Are you a good lier? » July 19, 2014 6:08 pm |
As I don't know you, it's rather guessing, right?
I'm a pretty good liar, at least people tell me this. But I hate lying, so I don't do it very often and only when circumstances request it (e.g. denying that a secret birthday party is being plannend :D )
I eat my food seperately too, so I'm pretty sure that's true. Sounds plausible.
Hello kitty pillow... could be true, and that would be cool, because I don't believe in "act your age"... it's boring. Also people like to share silly secrets with the world, so I'd guess that more people would tell the truth in this thread than create a lie. But as far as instincts go, I don't think your Hello Kitty pillow is true (sorry if it is!^^)
Picked up by a cop - yeah, why not. But I say no, because I don't know any cops who would do that ;)
I don't know what (not) to lie about myself. I like drowning paperbacks in the bath.
Character Analysis » What non-Johnlock ships do you ship? » July 8, 2014 4:11 pm |
I don't ship anything, although Johnlock seems to be... most fitting.
I think I could become fascinated by Irene/Mycroft, but so far I haven't checked it out... *ah right, now I know how to spend the time until the worldcup game*
About the skull... I always imagined if Sherlock would have given his things away before playing dead, Molly would have gotten the skull... he never gave her a proper christmas present, and she would appreciate the skull, more than others...
maybe I should ship Molly/skull... *wondering if there's fanfic about it??*

...when you realise you have no free space on your wall to put it up somewhere, and when you try to decide what to take down you realise it's all Sherlock on the walls anyway and therefore you CANNOT make space for the new poster :D :D
(okay, it's not ONLY Sherlock, there are actually LONDON posters too, which for me is the same thing :D :D )
...when you re-read your submitted post and suddenly worry about grammar mistakes because Sherlock would take me apart for those :D :D

...when a friend loves the colour pink and everytime you see her wearing pink you only think "Sherlock" and secretly imagine making videos with her starring as dead body (meeean! i know! but I like her very much and it would only be roleplay right^^ and she also has a pink coat and that's just sooo perfect ^^)

they could do a "christmas convention" ;-) then your chances would be good

what does that mean, exactly? what kind of preview? (I cannot open the link in twitter yet, probably too many people trying to get on there?)

Series Four News » New speculation about shooting and airing in 2015 » July 3, 2014 9:51 am |
I'm not sure I like the implications of another "dark" episode ... I think I really can't take another TRF or HLV. I actually hoped it would become less dark and less dramatic... a step back into more relaxed and fun terrain instead of more heartbreak
I have no idea what to expect... at this point, anything seems possible. A main character dying, maybe Mycroft, would really put me off. I've had drama enough, I really don't want to see more devastated Sherlock, thank you. I adore Mycroft and Molly, no harm to them please
I really would love a childhood episode, or a crime abroad... but even that wouldn't be unexpected at this point I think.
Or maybe they finish the Mary storyline with something really shocking - another twist on her character - actually she has been always the good wife and has a bad twin who is the serial killer and John accidently dated two women. okay. not very likely :D :D but then the twin could keep the baby, that's what I like about it.

Why did it take me so long to catch up on this?? I accidently stumbled across the BBC tweet in another forum and was like: how did I miss this omg yesssss!
But until now, I've been completely relaxed. Like being on vacation... yes, there will be another series, but some point faaar away ;-) I know an announcement doesn't make time run faster, but suddenly I'm all back into full excitement... now waiting will be tough again - holidays are over :-D
The Empty Hearse » Too many references? » June 30, 2014 2:01 pm |
another latecomer...
I think it's safe to say that TEH wouldn't be first choice if you had to pick an episode - no matter who chose, fan or casual viewer.
I got the feeling, that here on the forum many very active fans didn't like episode 1 as much as the others. Or at least there was more potential for critical response... I joined here only after series 2, but I think the focus was so much on the Reichenbach episode that critical response for series 2 fell short. Now that we don't have something similar like the fall, maybe people take more time to consider the episodes in detail. Also the expectations were incredibly high and hard to meet.
To me, the fan service in TEH felt like a slightly desperate attempt to meet expectations and not to disappoint. Maybe with tongue in cheek, but still. Problem I had with this: I want to keep the fine line between what's in my head (shipping and stuff) and what appears in the show. When I say I would like to see this and that, then only half of it is what I actually need to see - the other half is fantasy that, if I am very honest, I would prefer to stay only fantasy.
That's why I didn't like the Molly/Sherlock and Moriarty/Sherlock scene until it was revealed that it's only in Mollys/ Mrs. Hudsons imagination... which I thought was cleverly done, and made it perfectly okay for me because it was there with a background. friend of mine without any fandom-contact said: "ohhh, that's the housekeeper imagining they have a relationship? the one who also said they only need one bedroom?" ...she understood that part perfectly well, although she doesn't know anything about shipping. same with molly, same with the "fan club"... the media attention in TRF hints at a fanbase, there must be more kitty rileys, and any viewer who has seen the first two series won't have a problem understanding series 3, imo. I don't know about casual viewers, but I have to agree - to jump into a series somewhere in the middle and to expect everything will

Haven't read the whole thread yet and have no idea what's it about right now ;o)
just wanted so say, I liked the dubbing of HLV. Some scenes I didn't like, but the experience as a whole was much better than expected. Few scenes where even better in german, which really suprised me (cannot remember which ones exactly, will have to buy the DVD tomorrow to watch again)
Bad luck about the thunderstorm though. Our TV tried to shut down exactly during the Appledore scene, because the thunderstorm was getting too close. I got upset but was ready to accept the defeat, when my mother decided that Sherlock would be absolutely worth sacrificing our TV. So we continued watching till the end! *hugs to mum!* (our TV survived, while I still hope Moriarty didn't)

General Benedict Appreciation » "Benaddicted" vs "Sherlocked"? » May 11, 2014 10:20 am |
Interesting question, I've never asked myself that!
I'm usually intrigued by characters, or songs, not by the actors or singers. With Sherlock it's the same - it's definitely the character that fascinated me. I appreciate the way how actors present a character, it's hard to seperate that... but for me it's mainly about the character and the story. I'm grateful Benedict created such a wonderful Sherlock!
Yet, Sherlock is the first series/film ever where I know most actors names and have an idea about what other works they are doing. I've never before bought a film just because of an actor, but now with films of Sherlock actors, I sometimes do. But then again, I also follow the work and doings of the other people involved with the show...
So I'm rather Sherlocked, not so much Benaddicted :D Maybe it's also because my interested isn't so much focused on Benedict alone... if I ever met anyone linked to the series, I wouldn't mind who it was... probably I'd even be more interested in the set design or the soundtrack writing than in talking to Benedict
