To the makers of the movie The Raven, I would like to commend you on a feat I thought hitherto impossible, you managed to make both the life and works of one of the greatest writers/poets of the 20th century both boring and mundane. To John Cusack, whose work I usually enjoy, the makers of this movie clearly owed you a favor that you both should have cashed in on another film, as you did Edgar Allen Poe no favors with your bad accent, brooding beard and swirling cape. I kept waiting for you to pull a raven out of a hat. This film can indeed be summed up in one word, nevermore.

And, I didn't think Chris Nolan could ever disappoint me with his awesome Batman franchise, but The Dark Knight Returns was so unbelievably bad and boring. The only decent thing about it was Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Sadly, Mr. Levitt left a lot to be desired in his own film Looper, which while it had an interesting idea, left me disappointed in the overall story.

Incredibly funny and scary at the same time. He would have made a great Lucius though.

I'm not going to worry about awards so soon, but wait and watch the film develop. That picture of him from the film set was about as scary as I feard it would be. Not a flattering look for Ben, but then Assange wasn't exactly what one would call handsome.   I'm excited for Ben that he has so much going on and so much for us to look forward to. It's a long way to go, for all my favorites this year, it seems, but the anticipation will hopefully keep me going.

I cannot stand TV ads, and in the US on commercial channels, they now take up about 20 minutes of every hour.  It's *nauseating*; they go on and on and on and on for 5 minutes at a time, breaking into every show 3 or 4 times for every half hour, the most inane, childish, stupid stuff you can imagine.  If I'm forced to sit through it, I mute the sound and look away, that's how annoying TV ads are to me. So in self-defense, I use my DVR to record virtually everything I watch, and then simply watch the recording, rather than the live show. That enables me to just fast forward through all the ads and network-related yap.  Works for me.

I usually mute the commercials too. They are very annoying, but sometimes they give me a chance to run to the bathroom and every once in a while I see a spot for another show/movie or something or other that catches my interest. So, given the nature of tv today, they're a small and annoying price to pay. Though I'd love to be able to do the DVR thing.

It's cold, cold, freakishly cold here.

Sorry about your ankle mountain mama, hope it heals quickly. I would probably do far worse damage to myself skiing, which is why I've avoided it at all costs.

There are a lot of films you know will get an award even before the filming starts. And there a lot of award winning films that I found immensely boring and trivial.

I couldn't agree more! That's why I always take these things with a grain of salt. I'm always happy when a performance or film I thought deserved to win does, but it doesn't diminish my appreciation of it if it doesn't. There are all kinds of motives behind how awards are given, sometimes genuine talent is the least of them.

I agree the title is misleading, but it was a huge inspiration for our Sherlock show as there were so many paralells, which was kind of surprising. I thought it was okay overall, though I prefer our Sherlock, and even Jeremy Brett's, better.

What network is Suits on? I'm going to subscribe to HBO soon, so I can see Parades End. And I don't have Showtime or any of the other premium networks. Is Suits out on DVD? Maybe I can get the earlier seasons on NetFlix? If it's already been on for 6 seasons, it'd be good to start in the beginning anyway, right?

As Swanpride said Suits is on the USA network. And, I'm totally addcited to it! It's true that the city isn't as crcuial to the overall show, but it's just a little thing that nags at me. The 3rd season starts tonight, but you can check out all the previous episodes at their website. http://www.usanetwork.com/videos/Suits/Full%20Episodes

And, I hear you about White Collar Swanpride. I'm picking up the first season from the library tonight.    I've kept meaning to go back and check it out, but one show just led to another and it kept getting pushed back.

It's sad really that he never won an award for his portrayal of Sherlock. I mean, Ben will always be my definitive Sherlock, but Brett was brilliant. He never even got a BAFTA, for that matter. But, sometimes, it's just the respect of your peers and the admiration of your devoted fans that is your greatest reward.

Eh...if cable-show White Collar manages finance this stuff (even if they do it by putting obnoxious ford-advertising into the show), then CBS should be able to find a way too...plus, there are also the details. A gorgeous backdrop for the set would work wonders. In White Collar for example, you can see New York through the windows of the FBI office, and Neal's apartment has a gorgeous view on the Crysler, and you normally get to see both as soon as they film on those sets, even if it is just a glimpse. And naturally they do a lot of "on location" shots....to an extend that people started to make "White Collar tours" when they visit New York.
BBC manages with London just fine too - the starting sequence allready screams "London".
But the main point is: If they do Sherlock Holmes in New York, they should sit back and think about how the character and the city would mesh...the bees were a good idea, but what is with everything else? Would he take caps, like bbc-sherlock does in London? Or would he knew the U-bahn system by heart, including the times when the lines arrive? Would he like the central park? Perhaps he would like the broadway, as some sort of modernized version of Sherlock Holmes love for classic music.
If you plug a character out of his "natural" enviroment, you better put some thought into it, especially if said enviroment is an important part of the original story.

I know exactly what you mean about location. I'm waiting to check out White Collar, but favorite cable show Suits, shot its pilot in New York and the show is sussposed to take place there. But, they moved filming to the great white north of Canada, because it's cheaper. There are a lot of stock shots of the city, but when thwy;re walking around town, you can tell its not New York. Don't get me wrong, Toronto is a beautiful city, but it's just not the same.
And, with a show like Elementary, the city could and should play a pivital role in Sherlock's adjustment to wor

I agree that it was a bit odd to change Peter's character like that and as a reader it probably would have bother me greatly too. But, Ivy's right about Le Carre being very involved in the production, so if he was okay with it, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I guess it added a different aspect of what their lives were like.

As a side note, I love the song at the end of the film. I thought it was some French guy, but to my surprise I discovered it was sung by Julio Iglesias. He really does have a beautiful voice.

Edit: Yes, Julio is still very much alive, sorry for my misprint.

I haven't seen the Hatfield's and I think Costner is okay, but I can see from his win and the other list of winners that the voters went straight down the party line and every single winner was predictable. From a nice crop of nominees to the same old winners. The Oscars do that, so that's why I was hoping for a little more orginality and thought from the Globes. My bad.

I actually gre to like his hair in Tinker, Tailor. It did take some getting used to, but the more I watched the more I liked it. It does change his appearence greatly, but that's a great asset to have with so many roles to play.

I enjoyed it very much myself. More than I thought I would as well. Some of the technical jargon went way over my head, but there was a lot of emotion toward the end and it moved me to tears. Ben's voice was so very powerful and moving.

I can't believe Lara was there. I'm listening to Coppenhagen when I come across it and she managed to rain on my parade. God, she's so skinny, it makes me sick. I'm guessing she'll be his date tonight at the awards. I hope he wins, but I'm not going to let it get me to like I did the crime awards. And, I will happily refrain from posting pictures. Though I did love his skull tie.
