In all seriousness, I am planning on going over there after I graduate. But I'm on a program's waiting list and will be in school forever; we're talking like, 2015. At least I have time to save up!

But you should know, I'm aware that Americans are not all the same, and here's my experience:
Many US Americans are friendly and warm people, helpful and generous.
And the more I get to know by person, the more they become.
Also, great political traditions to be proud of and to be continued, imho.
Also, there are some that would be great to have tea with at Speedy's!
How nice, Harriet. And I am all for tea. Earl Grey, hot.

No, I have honestly never chewed gum. When I was small, my mother and/or my orthodontist (how American!
) would have killed me; when I got older, I went straight to cigarettes.
Haha, yeah I chose cigarettes for a while as well. Started as a teen, quit, and then started back up while working in a busy local emergency department, of all places. You'd be surprised how much company I had out there, smoking. But I have asthma and my doctor quite firmly told me to quit now or else. and nicotine patches/gum make me want to yak. So it's gum for me.

Potatoes + oil + heat = Deliciousness. Doesn't matter what you name it.
The *real* potato discussion involves what you put with your fries/chips. Ketchup? Mayo? Both (like me)? Vinegar? Mustard? Sriracha??

Yes, I do like the Talking Heads and no, I don't mind your impression of us being their The Big Country. It's not a bad description of, and not an unreasonable reaction to, us. It *is* an enormous place; the resources here have always been staggering and Americans do have a sense of entitlement, because we've always had so much, I think. Nor did we experience the 20th century and its wars in any way like Europe and Britian did, so yes, we are arrogant and insensitive lots of the time in our worldview. Still, all that and my acute Anglophilia aside, I'm not sorry to be American. But there is plenty of room for criticism about America as a political entity.
Sorry if this is a bit thick; didn't mean to go all serious.
Well said!
And you've *never* chewed gum? I confess, I'm probably an obnoxious gum-chewer. And while I do wear a Detroit Tigers cap now and again I wouldn't be caught dead in a hat decorated with the flag (or even just the name) of the country I'm visiting. Heck, I don't even wear things with the American flag on them. The only time I've ever worn a flag was shortly after 9/11--I pinned it to my scrubs for a year.

I agree with ancientsgate. I'm not offended by what's being said here (as I think we're all doing some stereotyping and some of it's quite funny), but I do very much resent how the rest of the world views us. Americans who are the epitome of this stereotype disgust me just as much as they do you, I assure you. Besides, in my opinion, only very interesting, intelligent, and worldly people watch shows like Sherlock.
P.S. I don't think it's bad to enjoy fast food in moderation. I like fries (chips) from time to time and even the occasional Taco Bell run. But it's not meant to be your entire diet, and I think Americans try to pack so much into a day that they don't leave room for the essentials. Like eating properly and sleeping.

Time to confess: I'm not British, I'm an American anglophile with no immediate outlet for that. Thought I could get away with it here, but if it offends or annoys anyone, speak up and I'll desist. I just adore the Queen's English, and never get to use it.
Me too. I also watch enough BBC that, while I don't try to use British or Irish idioms I find them slipping into everyday speech. The insults are slipping in there as well.

Yes, our summer in Michigan has motly been hot, then hotter, then hottest. And dry. Today we had a little relief. But I guess we can't complain compared to people dealing with a hurricane.
Banbha -- Try getting yourself a Sherlock t-shirt. I have two, and I find fellow fans that way -- not that we necessarily have conversations beyond "Isn't it great?" but it's still fun. I am lucky to have some people I know well who are fans, too, though. And trying to get a few more hooked. Still this is the place to let your fan flag fly.
I just purchased one which reads, "Honey, you should see me in a crown." Waiting for it to arrive.

Well, I was going to say "The Reichenbach Fall," somewhere around the Tower of London part but I think I'll have to say "The Great Game." Though I can't figure out where.

OHHH snap. I was confused. I thought I knew most of the idioms (and I do know "trousers") but I didn't know that one. Thanks!

Meh, I'm 34. No big deal. I'm not Austrailan though, I'm American and completely obsessed with and BBC TV. If it didn't exist, I'd have to throw away my television. There are some decent American shows like True Blood, Game of Thrones (with a mainly British and Irish cast, of course) and Mad Men but seriously, we invented shows like The Bachelor. Not to offend anyone who likes that kind of thing but you do have to admit, it's crap television.
Welcome! And I agree--no worries about writing too much. No one's yelled at me for it yet. Haha.
