I think Yahoo will hire just about anybody to write their news articles. Seventy-five percent of the stuff they churn out is pure baloney. That long-winded explanation about how we use British phrases because we think they sound "posh," for example? Sure, that might be true, but it still doesn't explain why we latch on to some and not others. I use "bit" and "chat-up" quite a lot, and my grandmother was fond of "keen." Although, apparently "keen" was an early-to-mid 20th century equivalent of "cool," so maybe that shouldn't count.
The one I don't recognize is "twee." Is that an actual word, or just shoddy writing/editing?

Article here
Your typical Yahoo! News fodder. I love how they make this sound like it's a recent phenomenon. Is there seriously anything else you can do with a flight besides booking it? This could have been an interesting article, but then they had to go off on some obscure tangent about Webster's Dictionary...

Methinks "meteorologist" is synonymous with "incompetent." My radio just informed me that my area is experiencing "light cloud cover with patchy sunshine." I guess that's a new phrase for "torrential downpour with lots of lightning."

Good to know. After letting myself mull over it for twenty-four hours, I can't help but notice all the little nit-picky things I'd like to change. About the only thing I'm really liking is the color scheme, and I'm not at all pleased with that placeholder text. Maybe because I wrote the preamble to the Constitution from memory... Oy vey, I need a life.

Re-uploaded. Did that work?

Hey, everyone! Veecee asked me a couple weeks back on another thread if I would show the fake newsletter I'm creating for a class. Well, I'm not exactly done, but I thought you guys might like to see how it's coming along.
This is basically how it would look in a person's email inbox. Obviously the current text is not going to be the main article, since it makes no sense and there are probably a load of typos. It was early in the morning when I was working on this and I hadn't had my tea yet. And there will be pictures!

But the real question is, who is the victim? I'm tempted to suggest Anderson, but I'm not that cruel.

Ugh. Don't remind me either, please. I've got a pile of German grammar exercises to finish, a poem to write (the topic is "romance," so I'm done for), and a test over Beowulf to prepare for. Plus my desk looks like a twister just came through. And I think I've got laundry that needs doing. I'd love a cup of tea, but I have to traipse down two flights of stairs to get to a stove to heat water. I hate living in a dormitory.
I do a lot of reading when I'm not masquerading as a student. And writing. I do an insane amount of writing. I'd love to write professionally, but in today's economy there's no telling how that'll work out for me. I've been slowly introducing myself to Doctor Who, which is quickly becoming a favorite series for me. And I needlepoint. Yeah, I'm old-fashioned. My clothes are fifteen years out of date.

Rough draft's due Tuesday morning, actually. I'd rather not give the name, but I'll certainly post the finished product if you want. I believe I've got to design a newsletter later in the semester, too.

Sadly, that part's a little vague. "What are the shared values or goals or interests this community embraces?" is the direct quote from the prompt. It doesn't give much to go on, but I'd say you're in the ballpark.

Academic reason has been posted. Long story short, I'm researching the Sherlockian community for an academic paper. Yeah, my professor is awesome.
Oh, just to set the record straight, I'm a she, not a he.

Hey, everyone. I'm doing some research on the Sherlockian fandom community. I certainly consider myself a member of said community, but I can't use myself as a reference point. And since I can't meet fellow Sherlockians in person, I'm settling for the next best thing. I have to identify what unifies the community, what values and goals we share, what interests we have, etc. Now, I've done pretty well on most of this, but I finally hit a roadblock with the most important question: What values do we share? Honestly, I have no idea, because I've never met another Sherlockian before (but I know there is one at my school, because I've been finding "I believe in Sherlock Holmes" notes in strange places).
So what do you guys think? What values and goals do we share? If you want to comment on something else, please go ahead, but the values and goals is really what I'd like input on.
Thanks!

Well if I was, I wouldn't admit it, would I?

*sigh*
Introductions are always so awkward. I stumbled across this board yesterday while doing some research, funnily enough. I'm certainly a big fan of Sherlock, but I'll admit I've actually joined for an academic reason, which I'll post elsewhere.
Okay, I guess what I'm trying to say is "Hi! I'm Lieutenant C. and Sherlock is my favorite television series!"
