(And we know from TAB that Sherlock is bothered by his choice to be alone, and sees John as being concerned about it - so I think he completely takes this in the way it is intended).
And yet John never asks "what do you want, Sherlock, to make you happy?", he just orders him to be with a woman who is a criminal and a sociopath right away, LOL.
You are so right about asking... But I don't think, John will ever ask.
On the other hand - if John really believes, Sherlock needs Irene in his life, he should act in Sherlock style: steal for a time Sherlock's phone, text or call Irene, and invite her to come. But first tell her what the situation is like, because Sherlock is already the different man...

Oh I'm sure Irene could handle him!

My headcanon sez that Irene keeps very close tabs on Sherlock...

I think so, too.

Not sure if it would be wise to pair Sherlock with the person who actually beats people for her job....

But as long as he's off John's hands...

Oh I don't approve of her job or much about her, really.
But Sherlock seems interested.

I don't disapprove of her job - she provides a popular service. With a royal seal of approval, apparently. Either way, she's Sherlock's choice, "the" woman ... although apparently he prefers to adore from afar, and, presumably, fantasise, rather than risk his heart.

Or possibly risk her own life?

Also, having a baby, I´m sure you wouldn´t want trained assassins around either - so why is John not equally angry with Mary?
Mary did not invite the assasin, it is just part of her past that caught her, there is no reason be angry at her for it. But he is angry or maybe more disapointed that she exludes him from decision, solution.

Well, as much as I'd love to know when exactly Sherlock would reply to a text from Irene, I very much doubt we'll see her in TFP.

No I don't think so, either.

No, I think her role has been explained. (Much as I would love a secret casting appearance!).
Besleybean, that's a good point about risking her life ... although I'm sure they could manage some sort of secret assignation especially years after her "death". Somewhere nobody would suspect. Like a Harvester in High Wycombe.

I think John does have some anger issues, anyway.
Possibly with Harry.
Possibly as part of his PTSD, after Afghanistan.
Then with Sherlock and the fake death.
Then with Mary and the assassin business, including her going away and finally with her sacrificing herself.
Then with Sherlock for not being able to protect Mary.
And possibly with John's parents as well. His anger issues might well have started long before he was ever deployed to Afghanistan--possibly even before he went to college.
If only the show would bring some of John's back story as well as Sherlock's, that would answer some questions for us.

Oh, yes! If Mofftiss feel like they run out of ideas, maybe it is time to say something more about John's family, and his past?. Mrs Hudson said in TLD: "...but if Sherlock Holmes dies too, who will you have then? Because I'll tell you something, John Watson, you will not have me!". I guess, John's parents are dead (it means, they died rather young), but what about Harry?

I suspect we are never going to find out about Harry.

Poor Harry. Reduced to just a point in a deduction and a couple of comments about drinking!

I wonder if things would have been different, if the show had indeed gone on...
But I suspect not.
To be honest, that's why I've never really got peoples obsession over John's past.
As Martin himself said, the show is called ' Sherlock', not 'John'.

That's because Martin F. Made him very interesting character Much more, than Conan-Doyle's John Watson.

Oh I definitely agree on that point...and I know John in some sense is supposed to represent the viewers...
