You are so right about asking... But I don't think, John will ever ask.

On the other hand - if John really believes, Sherlock needs Irene in his life, he should act in Sherlock style: steal for a time Sherlock's phone, text or call Irene, and invite her to come. But first tell her what the situation is like, because Sherlock is already the different man...

My headcanon sez that Irene keeps very close tabs on Sherlock...

But Sherlock seems interested.

Well, as much as I'd love to know when exactly Sherlock would reply to a text from Irene, I very much doubt we'll see her in TFP.

No, I think her role has been explained.   (Much as I would love a secret casting appearance!). 

Besleybean, that's a good point about risking her life ... although I'm sure they could manage some sort of secret assignation especially years after her "death".  Somewhere nobody would suspect.  Like a Harvester in High Wycombe.

If only the show would bring some of John's back story as well as Sherlock's, that would answer some questions for us.
 

Oh, yes! If Mofftiss feel like they run out of ideas, maybe it is time to say something more about John's family, and his past?. Mrs Hudson said in TLD: "...but if Sherlock Holmes dies too, who will you have then? Because I'll tell you something, John Watson, you will not have me!". I guess, John's parents are dead (it means, they died rather young), but what about Harry?

To be honest, that's why I've never really got peoples obsession over John's past.
As Martin himself said, the show is called ' Sherlock', not 'John'.

That's because Martin F. Made him very interesting character Much more, than Conan-Doyle's John Watson.
