The Science Of Deduction » Did anyone try "seriously" deducing in real life? » May 8, 2014 4:04 pm |
Since watching Sherlock, I enjoy being observant. It's great to discover things you never noticed before. But I don't think it makes me clever - I just slowly start realising how very blind we wander through everyday life. I like noticing things, though I rarely try to deduce anything.
Personally it would annoy me if people started staring at my watch, phone, shoes, whatever else, and I like to think my friends feel the same (they are not as much into Sherlock as I am) so I don't "practice" on them.
I think it's good fun though, sometimes I find myself contemplating people's habits, usually when I'm on the bus or train and very bored. But I find it's rather difficult to verify my ideas, so most of the time I don't even know if I'm right or wrong about sth.
zeratul, I know that typewriter behaviour, so I think you could be right. I once did a ten-finger-writing-course where we had to use typewriters, and afterwards I always tried to jump lines manually on my computer

My feeling is that Moftiss have no intention of writing Amanda out - not least because Martin and Amanda seem particularly friendly with Mark, and I just think she'll be kept on board, as part of the "family".
I can quite understand why they would want to keep her for that reason alone - but I really hope it's just a reason amongst others.
I never liked the idea of Mary much, but I have to confess, it did work well. I think it would be easier to focus only on John and Sherloc again if Mary wasn't such a strong character... and I think she partly is because Amanda Abbington is a really good Mary and has good chemistry with the others. For me, Mary wasn't a supporting character at all, she was well-matched for John and Sherlock, and that's the main reason I don't want her to stay... her character is too powerful to be a side character. She feels more like a Moriarty to me - someone who immediatly attracts attention when entering a scene, a strong complex character. And I think that's a temptation for future series - who would write off a character like that?
I think I'd like her to stay only when she started working against/opposite Sherlock and John... because the dynamics would fit better then... but that would be heartbreaking, and it would totally ruin series 3 for me

Is it possible to decide for a favourite from series 3? I see myself failing.
I absolutely adore "Addicted to a certain lifestyle" and the music to the mindpalace scene, but the one I listen the most to is the Appledore theme. Like "Deeper into Baskerville" it's incredibly powerful. I also like "Vanishing underground", although I didn't like the film sequence much. "How it was done" makes me laugh out loud every time :D
I find it very hard to pick a favourite, although I have my favourites for series 1 and 2. ("A man who can" and "Prepared to do anything")
... and after listening to the soundtrack over and over again,my favourite from series 3 is indeed "Vanishing Underground"
Music » Do anyone of you write songs? » May 5, 2014 12:02 pm |
I try, but I'm playing guitar and piano only as hobby and I'm just not good enough at it. I'm trying to improve, but I lack the patience (hello Mattlocked^^). So it's all simple and rather boring stuff and I'm generally frustrated about it, so nothing to share, sorry ;)

Sherlock Holmes Sherlock Holmes Scherlock Holmes Scherlock Holmse
I also use ten-finger-typing (is that equivalent to touch-typing? I didn't know the expression so far).
I tried to type extra fast to make it more difficult. I think the "sch" is a typical german mistake, because we rarely type "sh" but "sch" all the time?

I see your point with the many people...
I've got space here, living in a student's home. We've got a big room for parties in the basement, easily accomodates 30 people, but it's not quite as cosy as a hotel room... but we've got sofas! :-) Also the walls aren't white painted, so we would need a screen of some sort. And overnight stays wouldn't be a problem as long as everybody would be fine with a mattress on the floor - which I am not sure of!
...just offering. I wanted to do a Sherlock party anyway at some point down there... but it would be student like, not high comfort, that's the point I'm trying to make^^
(but hey, I can offer 10 mattresses, REAL ones not air ones... who else can? )

I'm not sure if I could arrange it - I'm not brilliant with organizing I confess, my life is proof of that :D
But this time we wouldn't need to go to a hotel, because we don't need live BBC, right?
So we could just meet somewhere private maybe?
I don't know which kind of disagreements happend, gently, and I'm sorry they did. but maybe a more private meeting would be easier to organize... and maybe others could do the main organizing stuff this time.
Maybe we could first agree on the period when exactly we want to meet (summer? juni? july? august?). Then I could put up a doodle up with more specific dates.
And we all could think about locations, and what exactly we would like to do - watch series 3 again, what else?
Just putting my random thoughts here. what do you think?
Meet The Members » What's your ringtone? » April 16, 2014 10:24 am |
My ringtone is "welcome to London" downloaded from the Sherlockology page. It's taking up all music capacity on my phone and it was the only file small enough. Sadly I cannot change my message alert, I'd love to hear "bored!"
It says about me that I have a very old phone, nothing smart about it, and if I had another one, I'd choose "deeper into Baskerville" as well :D Or parts of "prepared to do anything", I love the increasing music!
My mobile is also more an emergency phone. I prefer landline or email.
Also, if you have a nice mp3 Sherlock file with less than 720kb for me with the cool parts of Prepared to do anything, you're my new best friend :D :D

Got an answer from ARD. Might I just say, it sounds like I critized them in a harsh way - I did not. It was a friendly question, definitely no accusation! Seems like they read something into it that I wasn't even suggesting (the content related stuff).
But then again, maybe they got more mails but the one about that topic, and just ran out of patience? Has anybody else been writing to them?

I wrote to ARD. Suggesting they pick a better time frame for series 3.
Will tell you if they answer something worthwhile ;)
Meet The Members » Are You Crazy? » March 31, 2014 11:50 pm |
When I lived in London, I used to walk up a hill, turn round and run down, spreading my arms, screaming. I cannot really say why I did that. I was bored, it was fun, it was a good way to let go of aggression, and I liked running :D London was generally a good place to be crazy. I miss it.
I went alone to Paris to visit a heavy metal concert next to Moulin Rouge. I then forgot which bus I needed to take and walked home at night without knowing the way. Never again have I had so many offers though I didn't know exactly what kind of offers because I don't speak french... I have a good imagination though :D I was so glad when I was finally home in my hostel!
Here at home, we changed an advertisement of a mobile phone shop. It read "for you" with a ticked box, and "for everyone else" with an empty box next to it. Somehow we didn't like the egoistic message, so we changed the message on all three shops in our town (without damaging anything of course). It took the shop assistants days to realise. Good fun.
Once our town had christmas trees out in November already. We went round at night and put loads of little paper signs up on the trees which read: it's not christmas yet! Those were busy shopping streets, and till christmas the signs were there, and people where reading them and talking about them. It was so much fun watching them
I've also been climbing around a good deal more construction sites than my parents want to know about. Best playgrounds ever. Nothing will keep me away from abandonded empty houses either.
I like hiking in scottish rain, which must mean I'm crazy.
Oh, and once I spent a weekend in a hotel, just to watch Sherlock series 3 live on BBC. Everybody I know considered this as craziness, but I know, it won't count here

Sometime soon I will plan my summer holidays, so when exactly will we watch 13.5 hours of Sherlock? July, August? I don't know why, but somehow I'd like to be there when it happens *goodmemories*

I don't have a problem with that kind of coincidence, because I think they happen every single day everywhere. If you are willing to realise and admit them.
Sherlock was just waiting for some loose ends to wrap up. He was keeping his eyes open everywhere in case he would spot the one thing that could lead him further. I suppose he saw the phone book, thought: "well, an empty flat directly next to that shop, that's too good to be true" and "that would be quite a coincidence, not very likely"... but then, he is curious and thourough and maybe he thought: "it's unlikely, but who knows... better let's give it a go" and it worked out. Also suspicions can be very strong. I would think that somebody like Sherlock, despite being rational in his methods, would still always act on a suspicion instead of ignoring it.
I've experienced coincidences like this. They do happen. Coincidences make good stories. If I want to tell a good story to friends, I'll tell them about the surprising and unexpected things that happened to me. A TV show tells a story. It works for me, doesn't feel far-fetched

I really don't understand either why they need details and such, for an e-mail notification. I don't like it if somebody tries to get personal information in such a way...
I would love love love to go though!!

There really seem to be an ACD- and a BBC-Sherlock-side.
I personally think that this is a new development. With series 1 and 2, I felt like we were all on the same page. That's what I thought was the brilliance of these series, that they worked for nearly everyone (the hardcore canon fans, the fans of crime series, Cumberbatch/Freeman fans, occasional viewers, ...)
With series 3, I think this doesn't work anymore. I would have thought, if they could do it once, twice... why not a third time? That's where most of my disappointment comes from.
(I'm hoping for the fourth series now: to close the gap between BBC Sherlock fans and ACD fans again.)
