new to this game, any rules I should know?
hope it is ok to try solving? or is there a certain amount of letters to be asked for first?

For a start, Sherlock stops Mycroft going into the bedroom, so doesn't want him to find Janine (the clue that it's Magnusson he's after), but then tells Mycroft outright that he's going after Magnusson (where Janine could possibly hear).
I haven't thought about that. Could Janine have heard? It would seem incredibly careless on Sherlocks part. Or he just trusts Janine not to be clever enough to understand. But Janine obviously knows Mycroft rather well (having witnessed a lot of fighting between the two, as it seems), so would she really miss everything they discuss? Also she seems to be a curious type. And not downright stupid. Yet she believes the proposition. I'm not sure about Janine...
but I cannot find evidence how she could be anything more than she seems to be.

Believe me, I cannot even type the words ansd sounds needed to respond to this absurd premise.
I also think it's absurd, but after all, absurd theories are a fun way to pass time. (But then again, I'm always sure the writers somehow know what we're thinking and I really don't want them to get ideas like that... so maybe better not joke too much on it... they might just go for it, as seen in TEH ;) )

Can we even go so far as to assume that Mycroft knew all the way that the Appledore archives were inexistant and wanted Sherlock to kill Magnussen?
But why then show us the scene when Mycroft sits in the helicopter, quite distressed? He seems fairly panicked that Sherlock gets shot on the spot on Appledore terrace, and he also wonders what Sherlock has done now. And there is no one else really to witness that. It would be an odd scene if Mycroft was the one who sent Sherlock for Magnusson. Also the warnings that Mycroft gave Sherlock before felt quite honest to me (Mycrofts motivation for these warnings isn't that clear to me, though).
For the tarmac scene - to me it's two friends reaching out over an abyss. They cannot hug, too much is still in the inbetween, unsaid, unresolved. But Sherlock knows he has to cross now or never, and offers his hand. I think he is very emotional there, and very well aware about what's happening. I agree that John doesn't quite know what's happening, only that it's bad. The hesitation on his part results from confusion, in my opinion. Too much to process and not enough time. He seems to be kind of in shock and a few steps behind, trying to catch up.
The handshake, for me, is a first strong new bond, a true new foundation in the friendship between them, on which the future relationship can build.
The handshake is for me in the same category as Sherlock's "I heard you", in terms of emotion and truth. Reassurance, but even more, acknowledgement.

Thank you all for your suggestions. As it's my birthday soon, I will put the episodes you mentioned on my wishlist, and then I watch whatever episodes/series I'll actually end up with An element of surprise... and of course, maybe it's not my cup of tea, but I've seen short sequences on the internet already, and I liked them so far.
General Sherlock Discussion » Has Sherlock ever been in real danger? » August 31, 2014 2:34 pm |
I think Mycroft tries to protect, but fails whenever Sherlock just goes after something on his own on a very short notice. Sherlock did manage to get shot, so he's definitely able to get into real danger.
I'm rather sure the Eastern Europe mission could have ended deadly indeed. Mycroft is just human after all, and he can reach limits, even if it doesn't look like it most of the time.
No idea about Sherlock's training, but somehow I doubt he would agree to being trained by the "official" guys.
His Last Vow » Redbeard » August 27, 2014 9:49 am |
I think the moment Magnusson says "Redbeard", Sherlock is aware he might go for a personal way to get to Sherlock. It must have occured to him (or not? is he that unaware?) that John would be in the line of fire. Moriarty figured it out too. I'm just not sure if Sherlock is that blind (could be), or if he simply chooses not to share with John the news that he (John) will be used as pressure point - John really dislikes it to be used as a tool in Sherlock's games, even if he is fine with going on cases and getting otherwise involved.

You can be the weirdo/freak and still find a best friend... and have all the fun in the world.
Also, Sherlock teached me to care less about what others think - while also teaching me to care more what others think. I learned listening to my "Johns" and I get better at ignoring my "Donovans".

Of course.
I wonder how they do it... catch the essence of a film and create music out of it.
I'm always overwhelmed by good film music, because I'm incredibly aware that a film is only as good as the music it comes along with.

I'm struggling a bit with language here, but I think I get the general idea of your post.
Hm, because people seem to think that they live just from bread and water and just need housing and furniture and security to be happy, and seem to forget that they are complex human beings with need for culture, beauty and art...?
Don't know, really. I wonder the same.
Maybe because art is something you cannot simply "make work" with loads of effort. You need something else... inspiration maybe? Or just desperation, a need of a vision, ...? (althouth I would argue a mechanic or surgeons needs that, too, even if it's maybe not so open to see)
I think artists have a different impact on society.
How many surgeons or mechanics have a fan-base?
I believe it's just a different way of success, also different range of influence, and a entirely different way of working which not everyone might understand.
I think artists should remind the people what exactly they contribute to society.
I cannot really express what I want to say, so I give up for now.
I wonder what made you post this. What made you upset?
His Last Vow » Redbeard » August 27, 2014 1:50 am |
I believe Sherlock is an actual addict - he even tells John this twice at least.
So I also think Sherlock is just bluffing to hide his own weakness from John, yes.
Magnusson will know anyway that Sherlock has a history with drugs... but he chooses wisely not to use this against Sherlock, but something else/better. Sherlock could have been absolutely clean, and I suppose Magnusson would have played exactly the same game. I don't think Magnusson ever underestimated Sherlock, and I am not sure Sherlock is intending to lead him to that assumption.
I wonder nevertheless... Molly thinks Sherlock is on drugs, but he's never in withdrawal, is he. But I don't know much about these things.

I just had a spider in my room, and had to remove it, because I don't share bedrooms with spiders, ever. But it took all my courage to catch it (I cannot kill them little beasts). I'm angry with myself for being such a girl, but these little 8-leg-monsters are just creepy.

Costume » Mrs. Hudson in purple? Why? » August 27, 2014 12:22 am |
My first two associations for purple:
a) individualism and b) sexual frustration (I think I picked that up from some article about colour meaning...)
now what to make of that...
serious now, isn't there something like colour symbolism? I'm not into such things, but it sure could be interesting...

There was just something about Sherlock being submissive that undid me.
Ah. Yes. That. I didn't know how to put that into words. Perfect. Thank you.
I felt like free-falling when Sherlock stopped fighting and surrendered.
Although I'm now never sure if I read Sherlock right. I kind of expect series 4 to start with "oh don't worry, I wanted to shoot him anyway, all part of the plan, did you honestly worry about me". Looking back on TRF with series 3 kind of... ruined my trust in submissive Sherlock. I see it in the Appledore scene, but I don't trust it... I don't feel the impact everytime I watch it now. Sometimes it gets to me like the first time (breathìng? boring), but sometimes it kind of... feels wrong. Maybe series 3 just messed with my head. I cannot express that feeling any better... could be Moftiss trust issues. Could be I still didn't take in the new character development of Sherlock.
And I still wish it ended there, with Appledore. No plane, no coming back.
ok, I'll stop complaining now
Meet The Members » What do you do when you are frustrated? » August 26, 2014 11:51 pm |
today WAS a bad day
so...
I first listen to heavy metal and sing/scream along, while throwing things against the wardrobe
then I go outside and run barefoot through the garden (if it rains even better)
afterwards I sit down and smoke (sometimes, bad habit)
when I'm finally exhausted, I curl up in bed and watch Sherlock (prefer TRF then, and do some crying)
Sometimes I talk to friends or play my guitar, but that's dependent on mood and
when I'm really depressed it doesn't help.
the best way to cheer up I found in London... I would simply walk down to the Thames foreshore at midnight, sit down on the stairs somewhere, and take in the lights on the river... no way to be unhappy then, for me. pure beauty, which made me forget everything.
the sea works as well, going down to the beach, walking barefoot in the dark through the breaking waves...
