Hello folks!     I have nearly worn out my DVD's  (and even bought an extra set,  since
I love lending them to friends,  just could not bear to be without all episodes..   at any time.)

Unfortunately, these said 'friends' rarely get as excited as I was about so many many aspects of this brilliant series.

Then I thought,  there must be something wrong with *me*.

Then I found this message board.   I am very very glad to be here!

And although there still may be something wrong with me, I feel much better now.      cheers!    am so looking forward to Series 3.

Welcome!  Where in America are you from?

That's an enormous amount of money to have to pay out each month. At least here we do have the NHS to fall back on if needed. Not an easy economic climate either at the moment. Hope you are lucky in your search.

Thank you, Davina.  I know the Lord will provide.

The National Health Service is free at point of use and paid for by taxes. There is also the option (not affordable for many) to have private medical insurance which is a perk with some companies. Waiting times have improved. There are problems however with standards of care, in fact there is a report regarding Staffs Hospital due out tomorrow. Just this week there were reports of the UKs relatively poor survival rates for cancer. However the theory is (ongoing research is taking place on this) is that Brits are reluctant to go to their doctors with symptoms, which means they often leave it too long for treatment to be effective. This does need to be substantiated by research though.

We have Value Added Tax running at 20% which is added to products before they are put on the shelves (there are some products which are exempt).

Road tax is paid separately to the government. With a new car you will get it with road tax paid as part of the price. Road tax is payable every 6 or 12 months (you choose which). The amount of road tax payable varies according to what vehicle e.g. Some cars are liable to more road tax than others. The tax discs go onto the front left hand side of the windscreen and not on the number plate itself as in some other countries.

Thank you, Davina.  As my husband died 6 months ago, my teenagers and I no longer have paid health insurance. I am having to pay for it $1152 American dollars/month!  I am trying to find a job with health insurance so I don't have to pay so much. I never thought about health insurance and how it is funded until i had to pay so much for it.

KP, please keep your Johnlock thoughts to yourself.

Here we have the floor plan that's already been posted somewhere else. It shows two doors but no connection to the hallway.

The window in Sherlock's bedroom is NOT in the right place in the diagram.  Who knows what else is in error.

I was talking with my boss this morning and he was making a production about taxes. I know that taxes paid in the UK goes in part towards healthcare, but I'd like to know if you guys have to pay sales tax? Also, when you get a tag for your car, do you pay the taxes right then (like we do) or do you pay it at a different time of the year?

(Please I am not trying to start an argument, I am just curious.)
Thank you for your help!

I'd like to know if they pay directly for healthcare at all or if it is all through taxes. I've been watching "Doc Martin" and it doesn't appear they pay directly.

A Scandal In Belgravia » Sherlock/Irene parallels » January 24, 2013 6:00 pm

I noticed many parallels between Sherlock and Irene. Some of their similar actions foreshadow the events to come later in the episode.

My list:

1. Sherlock looks through her photographs; she looks through his.
HOWEVER, he only looks through her photos once and she scrolls back to the first photo of him. This difference illusrates her interest in him.

2. At one point in the episode, both Irene and Sherlock are naked.

3. Both change wardrobe, or at least try to, struggle with a costume, and say the word "battle."

4. Both "need a splash of color." Sherlock gets punched and bleeds; Irene wears blood red lipstick.

5. Both play "the game." Sherlock devotes himself to the demanding and distracting qualities of the game and Irene does the same, except from the troublemaking side.

6. Some superficial similarities: They have similar appearances, vocabularies, taste in expensice wardrobe, and the same blank stare.

Those are the parallels that I found; does anyone see any others?

I re-watched Scandal last night with a Sherlock virgin.  I noticed they both wear leather gloves when out-and-about.

What about a size of life Sherlock and John made from bittersweet Swiss chocolate? (Not sure about the filling yet...)

Life -sized chocolate statues of Sherlock and John, eh?  Nice idea, but hard to ship.  How about ones the size of Easter bunny chocolates? Yum!

Oh, I have a new little upload to add into this thread:
"You know you're obsessed with Sherlock when the wall in your room looks like this:"

Don't take any notice of the things lying around. The picture was taken on our Sherlock-Weekend and I tried to put all sort of "sherlocky"-stuff together that I could find...

Love it!

I've been following discussions on this forum for a while and I have finally made an account!

I'm really excited to be here and take part in discussions. There aren't many people in my area who watch Sherlock, even my school is dearth of fans, and it's really great to be in a place where others love something just as much as you. I'd love to make friends!

I was introduced to Sherlock on December 31 last year and from that day until now I have been obsessed. The characters portrayals are amazing, the costumes fantastic, and the music incredible.

I heard that they film season 3 in march and I'm really happy because that's my birthday month and there's no better birthday present than the promise of a new season of Sherlock.

Thank you!

OOPS!  I messed uo the last post.  Anyway, welcome! Where in the USA are you from?

Thanks! I'm from the East coast, specifically Pennsylvania.
I see that you're from Utah, which is so cool because from the pictures I've seen it's seems absolutely breathtaking!

From the desert to the Rocky Mountains to southern Utah that looks like Mars, this is, indeed, a beautiful state! I'm originally from Nebraska, which is not so stunning.

I don't think he's either afraid of sex or sexuality either. I think he's just so wrapped up in his work that he just doesn't have time for sex or sexual relationships. When Sherlock says he's married to his work; he means it!

I think over the course of the six episodes we have that Sherlock comes to understand his need to be understood and have companionship in the form of John. This is a very unique relationship, but an entirely platonic one.

I agree.  I think many people are over-fascinated by all things sexual and read things into situations that are not there.

If you're referring to Sherlock revealing the stolen ashtray, we Americans CAN see it if we purchase the DVD.  Thank goodness!
