Character Analysis » My thoughts about Mary (all episodes) » February 23, 2014 10:06 pm |
I haven't been in the forum much this season, because honestly, the heated debate sometimes ruins the fun of enjoying the story for me. (It gets so meta that you almost can't un-meta your brain afterwards!) Anyway, I was thinking about Mary, John, and Sherlock as I walked my dog today. For me, it came down to selflessness of the love.
John: Would die for Sherlock. Would die for Mary.
Sherlock: Would die for John. Would die for Mary-for-John.
Mary: Would likely die for John. But wouldn't die for Sherlock.* Would even kill him if she needed to. Tsk tsk.
*This with a footnote that perhaps, perhaps, perhaps in season 4, she will die for Sherlock, in John's view. Thus redeeming herself and eliminating the inconvenience of her presence from the Johnlock dynamic, and further cementing our boys.

Series Three Suggestions & Ideas » Series 3 discussion SPOILER THREAD!!! WARNING!!! SPOILERS!!! » December 9, 2013 10:02 am |
This, to me, is the best of all the trailer clips. (Well, except for maybe Sherlock's utter cuteness when he's tacking stuff up in 221B.)
This one sums up his last two years, what he's gone through, how much he's longed to be home again, where he belongs, where he can make sense of the world. Heartbreaking.
This delightful YouTube user has posted all the unlocked content. (I couldn't access everything from my iPad; not sure why.)

They're not leaked - they're official. Just go on YouTube and type in "BBC One Christmas Trailer 2013." There are a couple versions, but the long one has these Sherlock shots woven carefully into "Baby Please Come Home" every time they say something like, "I remember when you were here" or "Please come home." :D

Fan Fic » John Sort of Figures it Out... But First the Angst! » January 20, 2013 5:53 pm |
Half-Life
This one was posted a few weeks ago on AO3. My first "Sherlock" fanfic, though I had another life in another fandom years ago.
You can read it as friendship or you can put your Johnlock goggles on. "Reichenbach" is kind of gruesome, and this story reflects that - probably not good for people too sensitive to watch the last 20 minutes.
John... in the first few months after Sherlock jumps. There were clues for him, right? He wouldn't be completely surprised.
Any feedback greatly appreciated. This is an enormous and prolific fandom - tough to get a toe-hold!

Character Analysis » John and the therapist » January 13, 2013 10:26 pm |
Just a note on John and his therapist (and Mrs. Hudson, for that matter):
I'm toying with the idea that John has read between the lines of his last conversation with Sherlock ("It's a trick. It's just a magic trick") as well as the peculiar events surrounding the suicide. I mean, John knows about Moriarty, and knows they're in a dreadful, dangerous game with him. And then, from out of the blue, Sherlock lies and says he's a fake and jumps from Bart's. It doesn't make any logical sense.
I believe that John believes Sherlock is dead - but John would see through the "fake" thing and link this to Moriarty - and likely would suspect something bigger at work. Sherlock told him to "tell anyone who will listen" that he was a fake and a fraud. So, perhaps John (knowing Sherlock would have good purpose if he killed himself) is complying with Sherlock's wishes.
When the therapist asks John to tell her what happened, and again to say the "stuff" he wanted to say, she may be asking John to violate Sherlock's last wish. He can't tell her what really happened, because Sherlock asked him to tell a lie. Likewise, at the cemetery, John waits until Mrs. Hudson is out of earshot before he tells Sherlock "no one will ever convince me that you told me a lie." He can't speak the truth if anyone will hear.
I'm thinking John is primed for a second act here - whether he knows it or not.

The Reichenbach Fall » John after the Fall » January 13, 2013 6:43 pm |
Sorry, late to the party (just caught the entire series and was hooked immediately).
Re: John after Reichenbach:
I do think he's in denial and is expressing an unrealistic wish there at the cemetery.
BUT... I also think Sherlock left some deliberate clues in his "note" of a phone call. "It's a trick. It's just a magic trick." Plus, the bizarro method he went from sitting in the lab one minute to being up on the roof the next - it's entirely illogical when John goes back to think it through later.
He might not have a real sense that Sherlock is alive, but he should have a lot of confusion about the obvious lies ("I'm a fake") and the mismatch to what John knows is the truth. Not to mention how thoroughly John knows that Moriarty is a very evil villain.
So, yes, denial, wishful thinking, and some subconscious deducing, I'd say.

Fan Fic » Need Britpicker; Reward is Angsty Johnfic, post-RF » December 31, 2012 5:55 pm |
Howdy,
New to the fandom, but I have a fanfic history elsewhere. Couldn't stop myself from writing a post-RF fic from John's POV. (I know, it's not like it hasn't been done. But can you ever get enough?)
I don't want to be embarrassingly American, and would love to have some British fans read the fic over before it goes to the Internet. Check for glaring Britpick problems, but also for more subtle things like language use and word choice. Anyone willing to offer the favor, in exchange for about 1500 words of angst and the possibility of a joyful reunion? Maybe you'll cry.
This is G-rated but it can be Johnlock, if your mind wants it to be.
Here I am a good American trying to do what's right for the fandom by firmly editing myself. Can you help a sister out?
Here's a link to the Fanfiction.net posting.
Many thanks in advance.

Reichenbach Theories » Asking Molly for help » December 31, 2012 11:29 am |
Sorry for not being able to (in my short week of fandom) exhaustively study all theories regarding Molly. I will try to catch up.
However, a few things occurred to me:
1) When Molly says, "I don't count," Sherlock looks surprised. He could feel a bit of guilt, but he could also be processing the possibility of her usefulness. Given that he's recognizing his friends are his weakness against Moriarty. Molly can be very useful to him if Moriarty doesn't process that she matters. Ah, here is a potential ally and tool.
2) On the roof, Sherlock gives good space between his speaking, and waits for a response from Moriarty between names.
S: John?
M: Everyone.
S: Mrs. Hudson
M: Everyone.
S: Lestrade? (Pause)
M: Three gunmen, three bullets.
Moriarty CONFIRMS for Sherlock that the number is three. Had Moriarty said "Everyone" after Lestrade, I suspect that Sherlock might have named Molly to see if she is #4.
There were three IOU signs. Sherlock has deduced John, Mrs. Hudson, and Lestrade (based on the locations of the graffiti). Molly says she doesn't count, and Sherlock is hoping that she has flown under Moriarty's radar as a friend. On the roof, he speaks in just such a way to confirm that fact - there are only three.
Molly can help him, and he can maybe pull off the jump without M's knowing it's faked.
That's my theory.

Introductions Please... » Wow. Just got addicted! Also need a kind Britpicker » December 30, 2012 10:59 pm |
I just started watching episodes 11 days ago, and have gone over the top into the fandom vortex here. What an amazing show. Reichenbach Fall might be my favorite television viewing, ever. The acting and music are absolutely sublime. And it only took a few hours for me to go from "That lead actor is bit strange-looking" to "Oh, my, he's simply, simply beautiful!"
Any adult British fans out there who love fanfic care to Britpick a post-RF story that flowed out of me this week?
Here's some incentive: it's a sad, sad story but holds out hope for a happy ending. Told from John's POV, so angst abounds. You might cry. Teaser snippet:
Eight weeks and he has not yet ticked off the half-life of violent memory. He has not gone one hour waking without the loop: the black shape falling you and the roaring in his ears and the metal smell of blood yours on red pavement.
In every shop the papers sell your eyes your coat collar your hair
I'm looking for an adult reader, someone who can not only point out things like "crisps" instead of "chips," but also pick up on flow and more subtle language differences between the US and Britain. (There's a certain tone - a formality - to language on the show and in educated British adult speak that goes beyond vocabulary and slang. There are speech patterns and word orders and obscure things like that.)
I'm a fairly experienced writer and vicious self-editor, so never fear. You don't have to critique the characterization, pace, etc. (though you'd certainly be welcome to). I really just want someone to catch me if I'm making silly American errors in usage. And, hey, you can read a sad-John story while you're waiting for new episodes.
Thanks in advance if anyone is willing to take this on. You can contact me at fillyjonk at verizon dot net.
