I've found it! I've found it!
It's from The Sign of the Four, where with a few short sentences sneaked into the end of a whole chapter focussing entirely on crime investigation, the great Doyle creates an enduring scene of sweet tenderness without being cloying in the least.
It plants the idea of a growing intimacy in this beautiful friendship in our minds and makes us wonder and imagine, all without insinuating anything. In fact, we're told Watson is actually thinking of Miss Morstan here!

Thank you again SusiGo, your response was my lucky charm here which made me renew my search one last time before giving up and following another lead!

Thank you Susigo for your reply. I did suspect it may have been a fanfic I'd read, but remembering my surprise at coming across such a tender scene led me to conclude it must have been a canon story. With the benefit of your opinion on the matter though, I will now check the H&W stories by Katie who writes in canon style.

I recall reading a canon story where Holmes plays the violin specifically to help Watson get to sleep. The scene takes place in the living room of 221B, and Watson drifts off on the sofa. I am sure this was from the first novel "a Study in Scarlet" but for the life of me I am not able to find this scene there, nor in any of the other novels. I'm pretty sure it is not from one of the short stories. I could be hallucinating - it's a theory that would fit the facts - but I'd be very surprised if this were the case. I would be most grateful if anyone here can help me locate this scene in canon.

That used to be my way of reading this wonderfully layered show too; thanks Besleybean for reminding me just how far I've come on this journey.

Coming back to topic, with the TRF script, it's interesting to note that the mirror scene wasn't in the original draft, the scene preceding the arrest was entirely rewritten to have John declaring 'no one can fake being such an annoying dick' and receiving a Mona Lisa smile in response, and Sherlock doesn't say 'take my hand' in the original draft.

Reading the scripts affords a better appreciation of the acting effort, there's so much the actors add.

Andrew Scott made Moriarty a sexy villain, he just has to stand there and and chemical reactions take place magically.
But TSOT was actually the episode where the romance became clearest, to me. I mean they actually s-p-e-l-l out that they love each other, repeatedly, Sherlock praises John in the most dramatic fashion, and there's actual disappointment and pathos at John's getting married and leaving Sherlock alone. Why, that closing scene was the very definition of heartbreak!

I assume this thread is silent after Series 3 because everyone had read up to prep for S4?
But I couldn't resist mentioning how much I loved the idea,in TLD, of John's cane being witness to Culverton Smith's confession at Sherlock's 'deathbed', in a direct parallel to the original where Dr Watson hides behind Holmes' bed while Smith unwittingly confesses. It wasn't the most original idea in the world, but I loved how it was presented.

Not sure actually; I've only seen what I wanted to see

In fact, I used to be against the idea myself for a long time but gradually accepted it. It's too brilliantly done to ignore.

Oh do you have any idea how much I envy you? How much, I suppose, most of us here envy you?

Just two things before you continue watching:

1. Please beware of spoilers in this forum and on every Sherlock related website.

2. Do yourself a favour. However tempting it might be, don't rush it. Don't watch more than one episode a day. Just don't! Because the number of episodes is so limited and it will be over sooner than you will like it. Each episode is a gem and you should let it sink in an like with a good meal wait until your stomach is completely empty again for the next one. :D
One episode per week is fast enough.

I am looking forward to hear from you here how you liked the episodes and to hear more first impressions!

Couldn't agree more Rache!

You've watched the episodes. And you read the commentary on this forum.
You know what I'm talking about.

(Invoking John from TEH here. But you already know that ;))

Thanks a ton Susigo for sharing this link! I went through TSOT and, while the televised version was definitely better, it's good to know the beautiful plot structure for the ep came from Thompson. And he also contributed some of the best lines in the series ('clueing for looks' had me in splits over several rewatches) here.

Also, this summarily throws out my theory that the inexplicable baby character was the result of a last-minute decision.

Started reading TRF now, and so far the magic that originally made me want to fall at the writers' feet is definitely intact.

Moffat and Gatiss' main contribution on the final versions (so far) seems to be the artful elevation of the gay subtext from the obvious to the subtle. So elegantly done!

Ah, this thread. It's a comfort to find my thoughts echoed here (and articulated so well)! Either there was some level of advance planning behind the inclusion of baby Watson in the dramatis personae, or the writers wearied of scrabbling around for a suitable episode title and impulsively decided to call it the Sign of Three and throw in a surprise pregnancy at the last minute. Problem is, neither alternative is without precedent. Advance planning would mean the continued insinuation of the gay subtext as has been mentioned previously. And if I remember correctly, the now legendary dialogue in the pool scene was a last-minute addition to TGG; I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out TSOT was called something else until Moffat thought of this cleverer twist, and given their production schedule they just rolled it out and swept potential problems under the carpet until next season.

Well I made peace with series 4, it has grown on me, I still find the plot stupid and that sister especially in the last episode, but series 4 has fantastic scenes and is fun.

Thanks Ivy; your post gives me hope. I feel braver and might rewatch S4 now.

All the interviews / articles published thus far point to this conclusion. Just consider:
The writers have said that all the 'big' canon stories that could have been made into full episodes have already been done (London 2014 comic con)
The character arc that would culminate in the 'current' Sherlock Holmes is now, in their eyes, complete.
Writing mysteries and deduction sequences is not really their strong suit; their forte is drama, and now there's not much room left for that (unless they want to do something around the baby's character, which is improbable)
Mark Gatiss, that devotee of Doyle, himself tweeted at the end of S4 filming, "The game is over". No creator of such a beautiful labour of love could bear to use such strong words without actually meaning it.

Thus have I eliminated the impossible to arrive at this bitter truth!

Are people actually still hoping there will be a Series 5? Don't set yourself up for (even more) heartbreak my friends...
Short of kidnapping and forcing the writers to put together a new series I don't see how this can happen in the near future. They don't want to do what's already been done many times over, i.e . 'regular' adventures with middle-aged H&W so unless by some miracle they can think of another twist to the tale this is pure wishful thinking.

I'd been waiting for S4 before forming a conclusive opinion on this, but now - having recovered from the disappointment of S4 - I'm sure The Great Game is the best episode (i.e. my favourite) of the show. It is subtly layered, extremely intelligent and almost flawless. I'm usually the nitpicker and can spoil the fun for nearly anyone by pointing out flaws in a movie but The Great Game really encapsulates everything that's great about the show.

I'm here because I miss this amazing show, and violins sing sad melodies in the back of my mind whenever I recall the happy days when I watched Series 1-3 for the first time. Why oh why is this show so like an addiction that haunts you dangerously, long after you've told yourself it's a closed chapter and there are more important things in life?
