Yeah, I'm annoyed as hell that I won't be able to see this and, much as I adore His Nibs, I'm not buying into Sky!  Do Sky ever release their series on DVD?

Other Adaptations » Mr. Holmes » March 2, 2018 8:03 am

It was a lovely film.  I don't watch much Sherlock Holmes outside the Sherlock series but a friend who I met through the fandom wanted to see it while she was in London and so we went to the cinema to see it, and she had to give me tissues at the end because I was snivelling so much.

The scene where we realised that Holmes and Watson never lived at 221B but in a house on the other side of the road annoyed the heck out of me, only because I'd never thought of it myself as a twist for any fanfic I was writing!

The Reichenbach Fall » The Reichenbach Fall still makes me cry! » December 10, 2017 1:11 pm

Oh, every time I still have tears.  When they turn Sherlock over and John groans and collapses, that's when the tears start; and they run down my face during John's speech at the graveside, especially when he says, "No, please, there’s just one more thing, mate, one more thing ..."

*sniffles*

The Blind Banker » What does Soo Lin say to her brother? » December 10, 2017 1:07 pm

She says, "Liang [that's his name] ... Big brother ... please."

It's (mostly) Cantonese and was translated for the transcript by a Cantonese speaker.  I say 'mostly,' because the translator said that it was actually a mixture of Cantonese and Mandorin.  Apparently the person who provided the words to the show isn't a native speaker.

General Sherlock Discussion » Newly discovered draft scripts » September 9, 2017 5:26 pm

The more I look at them, the more convinced I am that the new ones - at least TRF and TSOT - are fakes.  If they're genuine - in my opinion only, of course - they prove that Steve Thompson is a truly dreadful writer.  The scene in TRF at Bart's when Sherlock's babbling on about how he loves his friends makes my teeth itch.  It's as if Thompson has never seen an episode nor listened to his bosses about the character of Sherlock.  It was always my understanding that Mofftiss rewrote parts of TRF - if this truly was an early draft, then it's not surprising in the least.

Ditto with TSOT - wasn't it established that Thompson was meant to write that episode alone but was struggling so much with the script that Moffat and Gatiss pitched in to help and that's why all three of their names appeared on the opening credits?  In particular, the bit where Mary's apparently enjoying Sherlock squirming about Sholto is hideous.  As for "Watters," well, excuse me while I throw up a little in my mouth.

I really hope these are fakes.  If they're not, and in light of how awful parts of them are, I'm starting to believe the speculation that Thompson has incriminating photos of Moffat and that's why Steven has to keep employing him!

General Sherlock Discussion » Where did Sherlock live? » September 1, 2017 5:23 pm

Montague Street (London WC1B)  is not far from the British Museum, and is right next to Russell Square Gardens where they filmed the meeting between John and Mike Stamford.  When my friend and Sherlock fanfic writer Mirith Griffin came over to London a year or so ago, we stayed at a gorgeous hotel in that road called The Montague on the Gardens, and spent ages gazing across the road and imagining Sherlock living in one of the opposite buildings!

General Sherlock Discussion » Where did Sherlock live? » August 30, 2017 3:32 pm

Also there's 'proof' of Sherlock's former address in the BBC series when John finds Mary's DVD stabbed into the mantelpiece:

In case you're not good at reading upside down, the address on the envelope propped up against the wall reads: S. Holmes, 156 Montaguest, London.  Obviously "Montaguest" should be "Montague St".
Normally I would slap the production team for the sloppy typing but on this one occasion I'm convinced they did it deliberately as a sort of Easter Egg for observant viewers.  Sadly I was not an observant viewer - someone on Tumblr blogged it before I realised it was there!

Soundtrack » Favourite Sherlock Soundtrack » June 24, 2017 4:27 pm

There’s something about Track 17 on the majority of the soundtracks.  Season 2’s Track 17 is Prepared to do Anything, heard first in Belgravia when Sherlock comes back from Battersea and realises that his Mrs Hudson has been abducted, and also in Reichenbach when Jim shoots himself on the roof of Bart’s and then when Sherlock goes over the edge; Season 3 is Redbeard, the second half of which still blows my mind every time I hear it (it’s the bit where Sherlock drags himself up the stairs and back to life); and Season 4 is You Look Different, the scene where Sherlock meets the real Faith in the morgue at the hospital.

If someone told me that I was being sent away to an island for the rest of my life and could only take certain items with me and I could never have anything new after that, and if they said that I could take just one episode (or even just three episodes) of Sherlock with me, I would negotiate with them.  I would say, “If I don’t take any of the episodes, can I instead take the soundtrack to Season 3?”  And if they agreed, I would consider that a good deal.

Obviously I would miss the episodes immensely, but the S3 soundtrack is truly phenomenal. There are so many good tracks – to the extent that I couldn’t even chose a favourite top ten – but the ones that move me the most are the five consecutive tracks towards the end, starting with The Lie in Leinster Gardens through to and including The East Wind.  Even after listening to them a zillion times, I still cry during the run of those tracks.  And when I say cry, I don’t mean that my eyes get a little teary.  I mean that tears are streaming down my face and at least at one point, usually either during The Problems of your Future or The East Wind (and sometimes both), I can’t help but let out a sob.  It’s not because I’m remembering what happened onscreen: it’s the music itself.  The arrangeme

I'm not sure whether there have been conversations here about the new Terms and Conditions for Livejournal which have caused so much rightful controversy.  In any case, in an attempt to show some moral support for those directly affected, I have migrated all the transcripts and all my other entries from my LJ blog over to Dreamwidth.  This also gives the transcripts in particular a second and safer home in the event of LJ crashing and burning.

I'll probably only do updates to the transcripts on Dreamwidth in future.  If you use the transcripts for writing fanfic and meta and are kind enough to provide a link back, the new address is:

http://arianedevere.dreamwidth.org

Have a nice Easter, everyone!  I'll be nursing the RSI I've developed over the past few days while updating every single link to the first page of each transcript and then all the links inside each page, plus all the links to my fanfic, macros and everything else ...

If anyone looks through the transcripts, analyses them in detail and then thinks, "Yeah, you know, the season wasn't as bad as I first thought," then my job is done ...

And finally:

I was going to leave this for a few weeks because I’ll probably be tweaking the transcripts for ages yet, but decided to do it now as a sort of early Valentine gift to the few members of the fandom who still might be interested in such a thing.

So all the transcripts - from A Study in Pink (both the broadcast version and the pilot), all the way through Many Happy Returns and the Special, right the way up to and including The Final Problem - are now downloadable as Word or PDF files.

There’s a file of all the transcripts in their entirety; a file of just the speaker and spoken words in every episode; and a file giving all the words spoken by 27 individual characters listed together, e.g. every line spoken in all episodes by Mycroft, or by John, or by Mrs Hudson etc.

And for those people who have already got heavily annotated/edited earlier versions of the transcripts, there are also Season 4 only versions of the full transcripts and of the speakers and spoken words.

To access them, go to my blog at http://arianedevere.livejournal.com and click on the link at the end of the red line starting “The transcripts are downloadable.”

The Final Problem is now complete.   Click http://arianedevere.livejournal.com, and scroll down just below the Index to click into any of the parts directly.

If there are Extras on the DVD I'll probably transcribe them too.  After all, I'm so used to not sleeping now ...

Thanks to the utterly sterling work of my brilliant beta team, Parts 2 and 3 are now up. Click http://arianedevere.livejournal.com, and scroll down just below the Index to click into any of the three pages directly.  Part 2 has been slightly edited today after I realised that none of us could tell the difference between snow and rain …

Part 4 (and at the rate I’m currently going, Part 5!) will hopefully go up on Saturday or Sunday.

Not quite done yet, Bes!

*Ari adds another matchstick to each of her eyes*

Part 2 is with my betas, and I'm writing part 3.  Sherlock is just being forced to ring Molly.  *woobies*

Whoops, sorry, yes.  I've got so many places to alert that I forgot this one.  Apologies.

This link goes to the front page of my Livejournal blog. The link to the start of the transcript is in the main Index, or scroll a little lower down to find the individual parts 2, 3 and 4 if you’ve already read part 1.

Sorry, but I won’t do direct links any more, because spambots are eagerly offering me many different links to porn sites and Louboutin shoes (is that you, Irene??)

Ooh, Christ, no!  One Batch-bunny is scary enough!  That many, all sitting in my flat and staring at me, would definitely give me nightmares!
