I don't know. But another Ricoletti in the series, I'm not sure it's a coincidence.

But... am I remembering wrong, or doesn't it get said that Sherlock helped with the capture of Ricoletti? During the gift exchanges? That's a bit confusing

Yeah, exactly. But I just noticed the name was the same (kinda slow eh?), and I find the coincidence too big to actually be one.

Still puzzling about the "blindingly obvious" things and thinking that one thing that jumped out at me with HLV is that we really have to be told more about Mary - her background can't be left hanging like that, and it does seem such a coincidence that she ended up with John (and then possibly has connections with Mycroft).   I know nobody has actually missed that, though!

I don't believe that MoffTiss and coincidence fit well together lol.

Lol, I found this quite funny - and actually rather believable, if you ask me.

Pure genius!

I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window there. Was there ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the dun-coloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material? What is the use of having powers, Doctor, when one has no field upon which to exert them?

Morning guys! I just thought of something: did Mycroft know about Mary's past from the beginning? This is just a shower thought (more precisely a 5AM drunk in the shower thought) but I think is is important. If he knew, why didn't he tell Sherlock?
He obviously knows the whole story in the end ("what do you think of MI6 security?" or something like that), but imo if he had learned about it after Sherlock killing Magnussen he wouldn't trust Mary like that, would he?
I Hope this makes sense...

Of course it makes sense and these are things many of us have pondered on here...
Does Mycroft know, for good or ill?
Is Mary in fact working fo Mycroft, or has he got her in is sights?

I wonder too... and if he knew... what logic is there behind him hiding it? Hmm

Oh and that link. That made my morning!

The greatest enigma of TAB for me. Interesting that Sherlock saw Mary working for Mycroft in his MP before the modern scene. Since I am not sure about the first modern scene being real, the Mycroft-Mary cooperation might be Sherlock's assumption or deduction as well.

I think there is some connection because can anyone imagine Mycroft a) not knowing about her past and b) not taking action after she shot his brother? This is ridiculous. I think there are the following possibilities:

- Everything after the shooting/the domestic is not real
- The first plane scene is not real
- Mycroft and Mary are working together which makes Mycroft a very much not good person

I think there are various possible hints that he knew.  I think TAB implies that Mary might even have been working with Mycroft (that's what Sherlock sees her doing in his mind palace - and we know that she was a secret agent, and that Mycroft uses agents).   It looks as if the tie change on the plane was a wardrobe goof (from Mark's comments at Sherlocked), so the plane scenes in TAB could well be clear, and there we have Mycroft apparently well aware of Mary's "occupation".

I wouldn't be surprised if Mycroft was aware of Mary during TSOT, when he doesn't come to the wedding, but warns Sherlock about getting involved.

I've even wondered if Mycroft might have hired Mary to deal with Magnussen, and that's why he warned Sherlock off him!   But it does seem that Mary wants to kill Magnussen for her own reasons, primarily.

It's also a bit too much of a coincidence then for Mary, who happens to have been working for Mycroft, to happen to meet and marry John - coincidences do happen, but it's odd.   Whether that's because Mycroft planted her there, or somebody else did, or whether she did it for her own reasons, I don't know, but it does look like John was targeted.

I do hope this is something that's followed through in S4.

I think it would cast a deep shadow on Mycroft if this were true. (This is not an argument against, I think we will learn some nasty things about Mycroft in S4). Because it would mean he had hired an ex-assassin to marry his brother's best friend, drawing this person into the family in a way. Even if Mycroft did not know she was going to shoot Sherlock, it still happened. And continue working with her after she nearly killed his brother would be quite rich, if you ask me.

As for the plane scene - what I also find strange is that John does not react at all to the sudden complicity between Mary and Mycroft. I cannot imagine he knew about this. Or did she tell him one day over breakfast "By the way, your best friend's meddling brother told me to target you. And could you pass me the butter?"

maybe that would make sense with Hudson's "You reptile!!" remark

I don't think that there is a secret Mycroft twin either, seems like Mycroft is shady enough without a secret twin (and I love him for that very reason). But I do believe that he knew who Mary is from very early on or he might have even been the one to plant her. We know he monitors everyone close to Sherlock, so to miss who Mary is, when Sherlock figures it out in a day, seems highly OOC for him. If one is to believe the surgery theory, then Mycroft's lack of response might still make sense. We know that CAM was after Mycroft, so he might have hired Mary to take care of their common problem, not realizing that Sherlock would pick that very day to walk into CAM's office. Otherwise it would seem that Mycroft could never be bothered to do a basic background check on Mary or investigate who shot his baby brother, and the one thing I do believe is that Mycroft cares deeply for Sherlock.
