Yes but I think we need it more for Sherlock, the show's about him.
I don't really think we need it for John.

Maybe they will...I would love them to.
But there's a Brit drama tradition of always having a character you don't see and I think Harry maybe the one for Sherlock.

True, but they work together, and since the show started off by showing us John's military history before it introduced us to Sherlock (and then showed us some of his educational and work history, as listed on his resume in TBB), I think that Season 4 would be a good time to show us some of his childhood history, if that can be worked into the cases that he will help Sherlock to solved during that season.

But the show has shown us young Sherlock and alluded to his childhood...we haven't had that with John.

I do not think they will show us John's childhood. Except it has an important function for the development of his character. Sherlock is presented as an enigma, a mystery: "What made you like this?" In order to answer this question, we will go back further into his past.

I think for John it is more important to get a grip on himself again, to deal with the Mary situation and what will become of his and Sherlock's friendship. I think John's tasks lie more in the present and future while Sherlock has to go back into his past to deal with his issues.

I agree, Susi.  I said something about this on the other thread, that I think Sherlock is still a bit of a mystery whereas John is more of an open book.  I think the military history was partially a reference to canon (I think TAB is similar for the same reason).

Today Mark and Ian Hallard were guests of BBC Breakfast, talking about their new play. At one point of course series 4 was mentioned. Without giving away too much, Mark said that for him it was the series they had done.

"It's very big, chewy (?) stuff, meaty, lots of big, life-changing things happen in it."

He also remarked that he would be willing to come back in January and discuss the show. So it seems there will be stuff interesting enough to be discussed after it has aired. Here is the full interview, the Sherlock part starts at 4.40:

Yes, indeed. And one might call S2 and 3 life-changing as well. So if they expressly announce this one as life-changing, there must be some really big, meaty, chewy stuff in there.

Chevy? Oh yum. That's a nice metaphor!

But certainly it sounds very interesting, and I like to think there'll be TONS of stuff to discuss

Thanks for the report.
I really wanted to watch them, but I'm in work at that time.

So yesterday some people came up with same very clever and heartbreaking speculations about S4E2. I can really see them going for this, based on possible Canon allusions, parallels with THoB, and what we saw during setlock and in the trailer. But beware of your hearts:

It started with this:

And this was added:

Yes, it is dark. But this is what they promised. And so far we have not seen Sherlock's heart being burnt out. But believing he had shot John would do this to him. I think it would make a lot of sense.

That's what hurts, that it makes sense. *gulp*

It's things like that that makes me happy that I've already made plans to watch the new series with my best friend.... I can't be alone for stuff like that!!
