I'm not hopeful...

I have got less and less hopeful as time goes on. I think they would like to do it, but I don't know if it's going to happen. And there are so many hints that the end of S4 feels like an ending.

I simply don't want "Sherlock" to be ended. Maybe not soon, but now, when we just were able to see real, unmasked Sherlock for the first time, I want more. It would be great, for example, to see, how Sherlock, watching Rosie, gets opportunity to rework his own childhood, and change to become "more human"... John is still mourning, why leave him in this state? And there are so many ways to develop all the characters. Moreover, secrets of Sherlock's and Mycroft's past, properly managed, could suffice to make 2-3 episodes, not just one ;]

I think they still do not know, they let something open (hope not much) and they will see if they are able to continue . I think that it depends only on people. If all the main characters want and have time to continue and writers write the script .

To be fair to Benedict's comment on the situation, we'll have to see how the series does actually end.
But I'm sure the team will end it at a sensible point.
Yes I am sure there is so much more they could do and Mark and Steven will be fully aware of that.
But they also need to have their two leads available.

In fact they can have rather big gap, start even after 10 years if everybody is still alive and there is demand. We will see.

And if they are available...that's the crucial issue.

I don't know if people are still interested after a gap of 10 years. Just consider the technology: the "old" seasons will look like classic Doctor Who in comparison. The majority of the fanbase is quite young, I think, so maybe they'll grow out of it. Moftiss have to be aware of that too.

I think some may leave the fandom for other reasons, too.
But I can't be the only one who would watch on, if it was an option, regardless of the gap?

For me, I can only tell you how I feel about Star Trek. Been a full fletched Fan for decades. Met Hubby at a Trek Dinner, went to conventions, wrote and read Fan fics ...
And then, after Enterprise, nothing. Being left in a void, I discovered Sherlock.
I warch the new movies and I will watch the new show but my heart is no longer in it. :-(

See I'm different with Star Trek.
I just love it all.
I am kind of the same with Sherlock Holmes.
The Canon is my favourite Sherlock literature, but I still enjoy lots of other Sherlock themed literature.
BBC Sherlock is my favourite film/TV version of the stories, but I will always watch other versions, too.
The original Star Trek series is still my favourite of the family, but I will always watch the other versions too.
I like the new Star Trek films and I love Benedict as Khan.

BB, Schmiezi,
is it OK if we take this discussion to the other thread?
I'm afraid we are driftung farther and farther away from the topic here

Sure. With so many threads I keep forgetting which one I'm posting in. :-)

And if the BBC is still willing to let the show be produced. If they've told Moffat and Gatiss to quit making it, then this is the end of Sherlock.

I really doubt they have been told that.

BBC has no reasons to stop production, "Sherlock" makes BBC famous, and undoubtfully is a cash cow,
BTW I am the "Star Trek's" great fan too :D I love everything, but my favorite is "The Next Generation".

Gosh yes we know...but the actors have to be able/willing to do it.
Benedict said that the story may just come to an appropriate end, too.
Plus Mark keeps saying: at the moment, we honestly don't know if we can do anymore.

I read somewhere, they need to get to know audience's reaction... So maybe let's not repeat "it is the end", but "we want the fifth season" ? ;]

Well we can want all sorts in life, but sadly it doesn't mean we'll get it...
