I have no idea about Dr. Who, it´s just what I could imagine from his commentaries and interviews about how he sees Mary´s character (the last comment about the lucky baby was from AA I think). He commented about her fitting right in, not disturbing the dynamic, being kick-ass and not being able to stay away from danger, just like John.. so for him everything is fine with her being part of the family.

But you were talking about the Moffat-verse, as you called it. I think that includes way more of his work?
And you seemed sincere in your former post that Mary is fitting in the context of that.

Raven asked in what universe their relationship wouldn´t be broken, and I thought that in Moffat´s head it could look just fine, so I called his head-space Moffat-verse. Sorry for the bad pun that caused misunderstanding.
And yes, I am by now pretty convinced that he likes Mary and fully expected the audience to like her, too..

With all that considered, as much as I´d like it I don´t think there is a secret plan for Mary at the end of S3 - people with a plan act different than Sherlock and John when no one can see them. (I stumbled across a very convincing gif-set yesterday.. I´ll go and look if I can find it again).

It doesn't make sense unless John truly loves Mary, and wants to bury her past to keep her safe.

Maybe not all for John, but for the three people that he had vowed to protect.
Plus, in my opinion, Sherlock would not risk all of that if he thought that Mary would ever go back to whatever it is that is on that USB. It was something so horrible that even Mary, who thinks that “people like Magnussen should be killed”, does not think John could forgive it. From what we have seen of his character until now, I don’t think he would let John alone with that person. Maybe he believes that she truly wants to start over. Given his past and the fact that he considers himself “on the side of the angles”, but never “one of them”, I would guess that he can sympathise with someone struggling (and sometimes failing) to become a better person, maybe even a good one.

That is not to say that I do believe that this is the last we have heard of Mary’s past. The insertion of so absurd a plot only makes sense if it comes back at some point.

Interesting.  Some fair points.

However.
"In fact, it’s much more plausable that John and/or Mary were plotting to get rid of Sherlock."

I cannot for one second tolorate the suggestion that John would want to get rid of Sherlock.  This flies in the face of everything the show stands for.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Definitely not (John getting rid of Sherlock).  But I think the writer is correct that he doesn't have a plan.

Yes, I too only spoke about gifset. The suggestion that John wants to get rid of Sherlock is too far-fetched, IMHO. Why would he be planning that? I cease to see any motive for such behaviour on John´s side.

I don't see that, either. The closest I can come to it is Mary manipulating John into taking actions (without his knowledge of the repurcussions) that might remove Sherlock from the playing field-- and even then, it stretches credibility. Otherwise, I concur-- there are some things in the meta that bear thinking about...

Yes, that was the one, thank you nakahara! I agree that the suggestion about John plotting against Sherlock is ridiculous - I might be wrong but I think it was just added to make a point about how far fetched they think a plot against Mary is.

I have to say as much as I like continuity and think there can be a shocking plot-twist too many, I think in that case I'd actually prefer them pulling an "Arthur Conan Doyle" again at the beginning of S4.. Them sitting in front of the fire-place in comfortable silence, Sherlock saying "So sorry about that wife of yours..Jane, wasn't it? Too bad she turned out to be on the wrong side after all.." And Johm mumbling something like "hmm.. yeah" in return and none of it will ever be mentioned again.

(I am not being serious here.. Or am I? Not sure )

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I don't think that those are comparable issues. Marybegone expresses an opinion whereas I would never want to see torture on screen here.

Swanpride: I have no idea what fanfic author you mean. My first though was Silentauror but if there is something you might blame her for it is that her Mary tortures others.

I'm not worried a fictional character will take offence.

But I'm curious - probably 90% of fanfiction writers are female and you're sure it's a man who wrote this?

Marybegone is a woman. And I agree that the comparison between her and people writing Mary being tortured doesn't make sense - Marybegone is just her user name, she wants Mary to be gone, not tortured. Just gone, in whichever way, which is what I want too. I don't think we should start policing usernames or judging people from their URL just because they want a character gone.
I know Marybegone and while I don't interact with her any longer because she can be very rude and short with people, I do agree with some of her thoughts.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

Thank you for clearing this up, Dorothy. I think she has been here on the board once but not for long.

As for the fanfic author - I still have no idea who this is. The series 3 fanfics I have read often picture Mary as a villain who is rightfully punished for her deeds but I cannot remember any torture.

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I understand feeling disturbed, I myself can't read or see literally ANYTHING with even a hint of torture in it - just to give you an idea I walk out the room during the 'flogging' scene in TEH and when Magnussen is flicking John's eye in HLV (ugh, I get shivers just thinking about it).
I really dislike Mary, actually you can go ahead and say that I outright hate her, but I would never want to see her tortured nor I would want to read anything about that either.

This said, though, why criticise/judge? Fics are not like the show, where you have to watch whatever they give you if you want to keep up with the story. Fics are separate stories and we can choose to read them or not. If someone writes something I don't like, I simply don't read it. Yeah, perhaps I wonder how they can like it or why they write it, but in the end I just scroll past or skip to the next one. Who cares about what people write? It's matter of taste.
For example I don't like bondage and hard BSDM stuff and I don't understand how people can like it, but I don't complain that they are there, just ignore them. I don't want to judge people for what they like (within a limit of course - I would never excuse a story that includes pedophilia for example).

As for the tags, I understand how you feel, but unfortunately I think that's something that happens when there is a super popular ship in a fandom and you happen to like one that doesn't have as much following...

Re: Mary – the subject of discussion

I googled her tumblr. I do not think that hatred of any fictional character is what drives her. I think she is acting out her personal sexual fantasies, full stop.
