Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Having a bit of trouble of keeping up with this...
But I feel what John missed during Sherlock's absence was the adventure and of course the friendship.
He reassessed his life,. got a job and met Mary.

Sorry that i was unclear, I was talking about John at the beginning of the series, as we see him in ASIP.

How can you possibly know he wouldn't? It's both mere speculation.
Of course the pregnancy can be an important factor for his decision, though.

I don't know if you have seen this here already, but you might be interested in the Report of the Research Commission on the Representation of LGB characters in BBC Programmes

I've seen it, but it just seems to confirm that they could have made John and Sherlock gay, but chose not to.  Gay relationships aren't a no-no on TV here.  The first episode of the current series of Doctor Who (a children's/family programme) had a lesbian couple (and a lesbian kiss, although I felt that was more for titillation rather than representation).  Sherlock and John would have been an obvious couple and could have made a nice "incidentally gay" couple, but instead it looks like a decision was made to make John clearly straight.

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

Why, does this carry more weight than what is actually shown in the show and what the writers and actors themselves say?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

We have been discussing what is shown in the show for months on end. And what is in the scripts. And that the writers themselves have said again and again that they lie for the sake of suspense or whatever. That their words cannot be trusted. There is a thing called interpretation. And sometimes there is a deeper meaning to things.

This is not about the show in particular but about BBC policy mostly.
Have you read it?

Yes, but it kind of confirms the same thing - that the BBC are happy to show gay characters (and want more incidentally gay characters), so there's no reason to make a character straight unless they want him to be.  It also confirms the use of "gay" to include "bisexual", interestingly (John's "I'm not gay").

I think it makes a good case for there still being a possibility of Johnlock, despite what's been portrayed so far.   That's all it does.  (In my opinion - it's still a good read).

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

It says also that the BBC intends to launch a show where the main characters will slowly develop their gay relationship. Not a small project, but a real large and influential one.
And I wonder what that would be - Call the Midwife? Death in Paradise? Or Sherlock?

Re: Johnlock: The Official Debate

But why wasn't it launched as such at the time?!
Queer as Folk was right up there in the 1980s!
