Mine will probably go something like this:

Dear Benedict

I hope this note finds you well? I don't normally write to people in the public eye but I felt compelled to get in touch and offer you this little fun token, because - from Sherlock to James, from Christopher to Mr Talbot - you have completely captured my attention and admiration.

Your passion for acting, your aptitude to turning your skills to any role, and the vigour with which you approach each exciting turn in your life, has truly inspired me to pursue my own interests with more heart. I've picked up my pencils properly for the first time in a decade, and I want to go back to studying my chosen field, international relations. For that I thank you. Because through your work you've shown me that I should indulge in my passions, and even if I am no good at it, I can still find the joy in it.

May you always be a leading light.

Not sure if that's too much, but it's how I feel...

I have actually hand-written a letter, using custom stationery with a (landscape) photo that I took myself. It's pretty much along the same lines as Clare's wonderful note, only, uhm... longer. And maybe a bit more cheeky in parts. And I had to thank him for playing a small part in getting me through the worst week of my life.

And for those who don't know what to write, I'm sure that if you just thank him for enriching your life in a certain way will be fine. Or, you know...

What you just typed there is fine!
Change the word 'him' to 'you', take out the bit about Clare...and you have it!
