Don't be lovey, write from the heart and the right words will come.
Mine will probably go something like this:
Dear Benedict
I hope this note finds you well? I don't normally write to people in the public eye but I felt compelled to get in touch and offer you this little fun token, because - from Sherlock to James, from Christopher to Mr Talbot - you have completely captured my attention and admiration.
Your passion for acting, your aptitude to turning your skills to any role, and the vigour with which you approach each exciting turn in your life, has truly inspired me to pursue my own interests with more heart. I've picked up my pencils properly for the first time in a decade, and I want to go back to studying my chosen field, international relations. For that I thank you. Because through your work you've shown me that I should indulge in my passions, and even if I am no good at it, I can still find the joy in it.
May you always be a leading light.
All my love and best wishes for your future,
Clare
Not sure if that's too much, but it's how I feel...

That's such a lovely message, Clare and I'm sure he'd be so captured to know that he's s inspiring to you, and all of us!

I have actually hand-written a letter, using custom stationery with a (landscape) photo that I took myself. It's pretty much along the same lines as Clare's wonderful note, only, uhm... longer. And maybe a bit more cheeky in parts. And I had to thank him for playing a small part in getting me through the worst week of my life.
And for those who don't know what to write, I'm sure that if you just thank him for enriching your life in a certain way will be fine. Or, you know...
Dear Benedict,
Have a pair of socks on me. Hope you like them.
Love,
me

I have already discarded 5 notes...
I want to handwrite it, but I'm so scared he won't be able to read it... but I want it to seem personal and sincere

I just hope he can read cursive handwriting, as mine is quite intense, aha!

How lovely, everyone.
I'm afraid mine will be slightly boring - I just want to wish him all the luck, love, success and happiness in the world and, like Clare, to thank him for inspiring me.
I'm just struggling a bit with how to phrase it.

What you just typed there is fine!
Change the word 'him' to 'you', take out the bit about Clare...and you have it!

Thanks, besleybean - I think that's what I will do

I want to put this Tibetan proverb on the front of my card (thought he'd appreciate the Tibet reference):
The highest art is the art of living an ordinary life in an extraordinary manner.
What do you think ladies?

clare, including a quote is always a nice idea, especially because he loves to quote quotes as well, it seems. And that proverb is just lovely!
I'll also start my message with a quote, but it'll go into a more socks-related direction, with a little bit of Twain.

That is a fantastic and beautiful quote, Clare! You really should do that!

It is a lovely quote and I think he'll appreciate it

I just talked to the sweet girl at my local post office. She told me to send it 5 days before...
