Alone on the Water was the first fan fic I ever read. I'd seen so much talk about it on Tumblr and wanted to know what this thing was and it was devastating. Prior to that, I didn't even know that fan fiction even existed. That fic, and PIALR seem to be the "must read" fics of the fandom. Both written by Mad Lori. She's like the Queen of Sherlock Fan Fic or something ;)
As far as AUs go - I really REALLY like the Tennis series' too though.
But as you guys have mentioned, if Sherlock or John die in the fic, I don't want to read it. I've read a couple that have been okay but I generally don't like those fics. I don't like fics where any of the beloved characters die - be it Molly, Lestrade, Mycroft whoever. Though I guess I could cope if it were Anderson!
Yup, I am glad to have read it, but I think Alone on the Water is probably the only one I'll read on THAT subject. And I also really appreciate the fact that fanfic authors seem to be conscientious about tags/warnings for their stories so that all the fans can follow their tastes from tennis to tentacles, I suppose :-)
I prefer the boys running about and solving cases and just being their fabulous selves!!
(Almost entirely unrelated footnote: I just sat for my Specialist in Wine exam for which I had to memorize wine districts from around the the world...It was easy to memorize the wine district in Mendocino County, California becuase many of their wines are pretty dull and the name of the district is Anderson Valley. I just thought of Sherlock's Anderson, and voila: memorably dull. )

I just read Alone on the Water. I'd been putting it off becuase I'd seen so many recommendations and reactions that I could only think "My expectations are now too high. I'll just be disappointed."
It was eloquent and lovely and devastating. Wow. I'm as much the opposite of disappointed as possible.
Again, thanks to this fan community for the recommendations and to all the authors like MadLori who put their hearts into creating these stories to share. I'm going to go hug some people and tell them that I love them.

Just read this one called "it's going to take a lot to drag me away from you" (mmm Toto references)
It's more about the relationship between Sherlock and Mycroft than anything else, and looks at the career implications to Mycroft when Moriarty learns of Bond Air.
It's summary reads: While everyone answers to someone, Mycroft answers for someone too. He answers for Sherlock; he always will, so long as it is in his power, and power is what he's most fluent in.
Very good characterisation :-)
Thanks for this recommendation. Yes, the Toto reference is a bonus! It caught the essence of the characters very well and was a interesting elaboration on Bond Air.
I've now read almost everything by sevenpercent on FanFiction.net. I've only slowed-down and re-read a couple becuase I will be sad to run out of new ones! Does anyone else do that when they've only got a couple of chapters of a new book left? Or only one book left in a series? I don't think I'm alone in that :-)

Agree, both the How it Should Have Ended and the Honest Tariler guys are uneven...but sometimes quite funny. The Honest Trailers for Titanic and Inception are my all-time favorites.

And to think I almost didn't check this thread on my lunch break!!!! Thanks, all, for the lovely Esquire shots.
What floors me is the grace and compsure he conveys just through the way he holds himslef and his expressions....what a beautiful man. MMMMmmmmmmm......Oh, and the coats are nice, too. :-)
But the only way I'd pay those prices is if they included hand-delivery by Benedict.

There's nothing wrong with guys watching it, too, I suppose :-)

Woo hoo, another Star Trek and Sherlock fan to add to mix.
As you can tell by the sig, I lean towards Next Gen myself... but enjoyed Voyager immensely. Remind me, what was the arc of the third season? Was that The Year in Hell?
I'm a recent addition to the forum myself but have had a great time here. So, Welcome!

As just one person who really enjoys this forum and hates spoilers...
Thanks for the community being willing to try hard not to reveal spoilers while keeping the conversations going!!!
That said, if there were a thread set aside for spoilers only, I think that would be fine and I'd just stay away.

I like many of Gaiman's books. My favs are Neverwhere and American Gods.
Have you finished Ocean at the End of the Lane? How was it? (No spoilers!!)

Another side-effect of being obsessed with Sherlock Holmes: For a split-second you consider that yes, maybe $10,000 is a reasonable price for a Vertu mobile phone.
Luckily, that one passed very quickly.

Lovely find from the Rufus Sewell board:
"the only actor i did not know in the top credits is the young guy who played william pitt. i liked him. historically he has perfectly captured the style and manners of the era he was portraying, while he was probably the youngest actor on board. he perfectly rendered Pitt's conflicting convictions. as is very rare for a young actor, he portrayed the ravages of age with dignity and made them so believable..."
In fact, I thought Benedict was one of the few actors in the film who captured the comportment of the times. We modern folks sit and stand so comfortably most of the time...but not so in the 1700's and 1800's. Benedict steals the scene a number of times becuase he's the only one in the frame who is still, composed, with good posture. All a 1790's gentleman need do is tilt his head or cast a glance to speak volumes. He conveys so much of his friendship with William with the subtle gestures.
Once again, beautiful!
Oh, here's a nice vid that captures some scenes from the film

I just watched TBB again and I really wonder about the scene in the tunnel when Sherlock tries to free Sarah of her bonds. Why does he even bother? She's sitting on an ordinary chair, right? Why does Sherlock not just knock over the chair, then Sarah would be out of the fireline. He might need some force to do so, and Sarah might get a bit hurt by falling on her side or something, but in my opinion it would work much faster and it really shouldn't be a problem.
This bugged me too. I agree that knocking over the chair or even taking a couple extra seconds to gently set Sarah/chair down on their side would've been faster.
However, that would leave Sarah prone and tied to a chair...so it would be even harder for her to move if they all needed to run or dodge something else. Also, she was rather handy inside the theater in the earlier scuffle when she hit an assailant with a stick. So Sherlock might think it would be worthwhile to free Sarah so she could either run or hit someone.

In the dialogue clip it sounds more like Sherlock trying to convince John to continue their adventures.
But I have watched the trailer several times and cannot see any details at all of the person on the front of the motorbike. None. I can see the Eye and so it's clearly London and it fits with Sherlock better than the other shows featured in the clip. So I agree it is most likely Sherlock, but y'all seem certain.
So I have to reiterate Molly Hooper's excellent question: "How did you identify him from...not his face?"Two words to answer your question. Spoiler Whore.
Ah. Well, I'm not into spoilers so I'll let it lie. Thanks.

Reichenbach Theories » Secret Handshake Protocol » September 13, 2013 11:02 pm |
(I posted this thought in another string...apologies if someone gets it twice)
I hypothesize you've hit the nail on the head when you say the rooftop Moriarty/Sherlock handshake is the pivot...but I suggest you've got the wrong "handshake" precedent.
How many times in this series have we collectively gasped at a handshake? There have been several (including the assassin handshakes you point out...) but the BIG ONE was the final one in Scandal between Sherlock and Irene.
Sherlock moves in close, takes her hand, and says softly, "I took your pulse." (Right? How could we forget? *swoon*)
SO... on the rooftop, first time Sherlock is on the ledge and asks for a moment of privacy, Moriarty must think, "What is Sherlock up to?" but he says "Of course" because it's all a game and he wants to see SHerlock's next move. However, he turns with a smirk that says he doesn't care how clever Sherlock is, gravity is gravity. But Sherlock laughs and Moriarty nearly screms "What did I miss?" Sherlock tells Moriarty he can save his friends and not kill himself.
And the writers set us up for the handshake: "You want me to shake hands with you in Hell? I shall not disappoint you."
THIS is when Moriarty gets a terrible notion of how Sherlock can save his friends and live, that Sherlock is going to fake his own death. To confirm his theory, Moriarty very, very pointedly offers his hand to Sherlock....
AND TAKES HIS PULSE. Bam. Sherlock already has no pulse through some mechanism.
Moriarty realizes that he's been beaten. That's why Moriarty kills himself and Sherlock proceeds with his plan to fake his own suicide.

Like quite a few others, this is my first ever fan website though I am a long-time fan of Dr. Who and several other British imports. It has been a blast looking around so far. I've especially liked the conversations around the show and the cannon and all the fun the writers have with tweaking/modernizing/and damn fine storytelling.
I live and work near Washington, DC. After the first DVD arrived in the mail (Netflix) my husband had to nudge me for days to watch "Oh, I don't know. It's like a modern Sherlock or something..." WHUMP. THUD. The rest, as they say, is history.
I studied for a year at LSE and love London. I don't get back often enough.
Thanks to all of you for providing a great community and something to distract us until Season 3!
Benedict's Press » Hollywood Reporter interview » September 12, 2013 2:42 pm |
I'm reading this awful interview now.. (though to say interview is kind; it seemed to be more of bullying session than a conversation)...and was drawn up short by this quote:
"[Ben] seems both part of this world and removed from it, with an old-fashioned liking for books" (my emphasis)
Come again? "Liking books" is old fashioned? Hollywood is disgusting to me all to often. On behalf of all the Americans on the Forum, I'd like to offer an apology!
