I was also wondering, at the end when Sherlock walks out the door with the hat on and says "isn't that right Mary?" did John imagine it or was Sherlock still seeing Mary too?

1. It didn't actually continue the story which was set up and for which we waited for three years. It just throw in distractions. I mean, that is the big revelation, that Moriarty set up something in case he died, and now Sherlock has to wait? Really?
2. It set up a new story on top of the one which is already dangling in the air, and honestly, I have a hard time to get invested in this because at this point it feels more like the writers are stringing the audience around than an actual mystery for us to solve.I agree and this is beginning to remind me of tv shows which had a great start and then lost themselves within their own cleverness and eventually had a disastrous last season. Like "Lost". For four seasons the authors raised questions and built mystery upon mystery and it was really thrilling. They occasionally answered some of the questions, left other questions open or answered them partially and also raised new questions. And then in the final season - nothing. Absolutely nothing. They resolved the whole show with one big answer to all the various questions and it was totally ridiculous. So many things became meaningless.
Some things in "Sherlock" already have lost their meaning for me, for example almost the whole of TRF. I'd like to believe that they'll bring that meaning back by eventually presenting satisfying answers and explanations - but I have my doubts.
I got that feeling since "I owe you", where I always saw a little more sense than what Moftiss gave us in the end (apart from the whole roof scene which is still a Bit mysterious to me). I doubt that they can fit all the solutions in two episodes without letting go of scenes like Sherlock and the baby. But who knows, they surprised me before, maybe they do it again.

The name is Stefanie and I'm from Munich, Germany. I'm 22 years old and loved Sherlock from the very beginning. No idea why I never thought of joining a forum but now here I am
I also obsess about Supernatural and the whole Potterverse as well as travelling and painting.

Thank you Three Garridebs, your Text exactly describes my feelings towards the episode. I had expectations, yes, but not very high ones, as I expected a Mary centered show. Only that usually my expectations don't get disappointed by Sherlock. The Blind Banker did this, but it still was an enjoyable episode. This time, Not so much. The lightness was missing and the whole feeling was wrong, as you said. And as this is possibly the last season this is really horrible to me.

Whisky - I think I agree with everything you wrote.
If I were to sum up my thougths and impressions in one word, it would be - confused.
I can only sign this.
I hope the other episodes will make up for this and that everything will make sense in the end.

Yes, I expect her to be back, as well. Still, what we've seen of her and John so far tells us one or two things about John. He didn't throw her number away, he contacted her, he texted her in the middle of the night... where was all that coming from? It felt to me as if I don't know this John at all.
edit: Ah, interesting, Susi, thanks for mentioning this.
I can imagine her being hired my somebody, because John just flew on her like no coincidence would explain.
Well he flew on Kate, Irene's assistant, readily enough. She didn't even need to be logically interested in him.
True that, John always was easily attrackted by women (his many dates, Mycroft's assistences and so on) but I don't See him as someone putting his family at stake just for fun. If it was some sort of midlife crisis or growing distance to Mary because of the child it wasn't shown enough to really be the issue.

Bus stop lady is easily the worst addition they ever did to the show, because of the way they portrayed her as "targeting" John...it takes too much responsibility away from him, as if he wasn't a guy who was getting around beforehand.
Plus, what kind of woman flirts with a guy who wears a wedding ring?People, men and women, flirt with married people all the time. Some people honestly don't care. I knew a woman years ago who only "dated" married men! She said she liked the challenge. I don't approve and I don't excuse, I'm just saying it's not an usual thing to happen.
People have open marriages too, and people wear wedding rings without being married (or being widows/widowers, ironically, given the episode ending).
But still, I think the girl was quite blatantly targetting him - I don't mean that to be judgmental at all, just that it seems possibly sinister. We all wondered if he'd been targeted by Mary in that way. I mean that bus stop lady might be working for somebody.
I don't think John did anything terribly wrong, fidelity wise, either. I thought it would be more than that (as I did wonder if he was going to have an affair), but it was a few texts in the end. He was tempted, but didn't quite succumb.
Also that strange move with her hand to the back of her head while turning away from John... Awkwardness or checking if the wig was still in place?

I don't understand John in this episode at all. And someone already mentioned it, he is a soldier, he has seen life and death - and we're meant to believe that he would really truly believe in Sherlock's vow? John must know that Sherlock can't always be there to protect them. Of course he is heartbroken about Mary's death, I totally get that, but there is no believable drama in there for me when it comes to his reaction towards Sherlock.
I have to agree with this. I would've thought there would be a MUCH bigger involvement from Sherlock to warrant such a reaction from John. A vow? Seriously? John of all people should know that life (and death) doesn't work like that.
I believe in a reconciliation. And for the first time, this time John ows Sherlock a HUGE apology.
Yes, as a first reaction it's ok, but that He shuts out Sherlock completely because of this is unrealistic. After all He has to realize that Sherlock also lost a friend in Mary. The Focus should be on Sherlock's inner complex after really having lost one game, He clearly didn't expect the situation to turn out like this (weird enough for sherlock).

I'm not sure if it was the fault of the leaking stream I was watching it on but the episode seemed weird somehow. I'll have to rewatch as I probably have missed some details and there were so many...anyway, mary's death didn't completely convince me, the repitition of the phrase "IF I'm dead..." and the resamblance to Sherlock's fake death...
Then the "visions" Sherlock seemed to be having...
All in all an episode full of suspense but lacking Sherlock and John.
Sorry for my bad englisch, it's even worse after this disturbing episode.Hi and welcome!
The visions didn't sit right with me too. It looked like he had a previous experience with the Thatcher table. I already suspected the father a weird psychiatrist of sorts :D
Thank you!
Yes, also the whole case seemed weird, if the bust had only been broken because AJ was searching for the stick, was it coincidence that the son died this strange way plus coincidentally beeing discovered by a car Crash?
