Hello, Ivywind!  I am April, and I live in the US.  We have a long time to wait until the next Sherlock episodes .  It is nice to meet other fans.  Thank you for writing.

I have two friends here who grew up in Hong Kong.  I love food their moms make.  My favorite is steamed dumplings (I think they call it zeng ciao?) and a soup that has pork bones in it.  If I go to China, I want to see Hong Kong first.  I would like to taste the different foods there.

By the way, I am a fan of a Chinese detective.  Do you know Di Gong An (狄公案)?

He is called Judge Dee or Detective Dee in English.  I only read one story so far -  "The Two Beggars".  It's a mystery about a ghost, and it happens in ancient China.  It was in a literature book I had in college.  The story is very exciting!

I saw the movies "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" (狄仁杰之通天帝国) and "Rise of the Sea Dragon" (狄仁傑之神都龍王).  I liked the "Phantom Flame" better.

I think Andy Lau is a very handsome detective.  He is different from Benedict Cumberbatch, but I still love him .  I hope he makes another Detective Dee movie.

He talks about his Sherlock stories and about psychic research / experiences.

I love that he has a dog in this interview.

"Mor people?"  Are Mary and Sebastian related in Doyle?

I find it interesting that Mycroft was eager for Sherlock's help in TGG and then ordered Sherlock to stay away from Magnussen in TLV.  He has been a rather flat character so far.  I wonder if Season 4 will be Mark Gatiss' time to shine.  I put my theory in my signature

He must show up somehow, right?  Maybe he was one of the gunmen for Mrs. Hudson, Lestrade and John? Also, someone was holding the laser pen at the pool.

I read somewhere that Sherlock emailed Sebastian Moran in the pilot.  ???  I haven't seen it.

I'd love for Moriaty to return.

isn't that silly. never thought I'd be that kind of girl, but now I just cannot help it... *embarassed*
(oh, not because I don't like being 30, not at all! but because of this whole "looking back, what have I accomplished" business)

I totally freaked out when I turned 30, too!  Now I'm 40, and my life void of accomplishment has somehow become much more "ok" with me.  At least, we're still conscious and on this amazing planet.  Don't look back.  At least, not until time travel becomes an option.  You never know.  Just remember, you'll destined to become 40, 50, 90 and / or dead.  One step at a time, and each step is... worth savoring.

(side note: I am thrilled to be almost the same age as Amanda Abbington - she is 44 days older than me (hers: 2/28 mine: 4/13))

Hi Tara!  Welcome!  I am April, a nurse in South Carolina, USA, also hopelessly obsessed with Sherlock.

It is nice to be among others who share our addiction, isn't it?  We have such a L O N G wait until the Christmas special and Series 4.  Please share anything.  I hope you enjoy your time with the forums!

Unfortunately I watched the film so I don't know him that much but I'll investigate :D

Yes, John Green wrote the novel "The Fault in Our Stars."  I haven't seen the movie yet.  Another movie based on a mystery he wrote, "Paper Towns", will come out next summer.  American novels (like his) portray Americans as more thoughtful, rational and kind than our horrid TV shows like "Jersey Shore".

By the way, did you see "Il Capital Umano"?  What did you think of it?  I think it came out last year, and is based on the American book "Human Capital" by Stephen Amidon.  This was an engrossing mystery!  I'm so curious about the Italian movie version.

Wow - that is well said!  Such a beautiful answer!

Watching is like being a part of the show - like assessing mysteries as Sherlock does.  Everyone involved put a lot of effort into small details: the writers, the actors (with such sincere emotion), the camera men, the editors, those who decorate the sets...  Each detail seems to be connected to the stories intentionally, like a clue to hidden secrets.

I do not know anyone like those on Jersey Shore.  The few Italian Americans I know are soft-spoken, intelligent teachers of different sciences.  They are environmental advocates.

You know Leonardo DiCaprio?  He's also soft-spoken and an environmental advocate, and Italian American <3  More like the American Italians here.

I can understand how you feel about Jersey Shore, though.  Duck Dynasty and Honey Boo Boo came from my area of the US, the southeast.   American TV is just pure s**t.

You are young so you may know my favorite author, John Green.  He is a southern American and he wrote some great books set here in southern US, like "Looking for Alaska" (Alabama) - my favorite!  And also "An Abundance of Katherines" (Tennessee) and "Paper Towns"  (Florida).  I think that's more like the Americans you'd meet (and maybe the adventures you'd have) if you came here.

Since you, too, are on Pinterest:
My "Italy" pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/aprmil/italy/ - don't tell me if it's photoshoped and that Italy is really not this beautiful.  This is my inspiration to keep adding to my boring, quiet savings.  I will go.
My "Sherlock" pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/aprmil/mind-palace/ - sadly, I cannot go there...

Hi Mela.  Piacere!

You're English is perfect!  How wonderful to speak other languages.

I sometimes try to learn / speak Italian but my mouth can't make the right sounds.  It is so beautiful - as pretty as English with a British accent, ha ha!  I know some wonderful Italian Americans.  Italians are so adventurous - living all over the globe and loving so freely everywhere.

I dream of visiting Italy.  I collect pictures from every town there on Pinterest.

I am April, 40 years old (I could be your mom!), single nurse in South Carolina, USA.  I also cannot wait for Season 4 / the Christmas special.  It is neat to me, also, how we are all so different and yet  fit together here like family.  If you are ever in the South Carolina foothills, I have a bedroom that is yours, no lie.  We Sherlockians are family <3

I just watched the 1970 "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes."  Honestly, I felt like I was watching another episode of Sherlock!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0puHGLAoCc

I watched after hearing Mark Gatiss call the movie "=mediuma template of sorts for Stephen Moffat and me as we made our adaptation for the BBC."
http://www.theguardian.com/film/2010/nov/07/mark-gatiss-sherlock-holmes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otYRcTrK1d0&feature=share

I then discovered the parallels between Private Life and BBC Sherlock were made into gif's on tumblr.

Private Life has even more johnlockiness than the BBC Sherlock:

The banter between the characters ... It's like watching another episode of the BBC Sherlock!  (Sorry, I can't figure out how to change image sizes)

The book I borrowed from the library (Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes) has the first story as A Study In Scarlet, is this not the first in written order? I'll have to google it I guess. I just finished reading it this evening (actually I was listening to another audio version while I cooked dinner). Next up in the printed edition is The Sign of Four.

I googled the written order: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_of_Sherlock_Holmes

I also found a link to free audiobooks of the whole canon:

I love this thread.  I plan to start reading the canon stories, or listening to them.  Any suggestions about a first story for an absolute beginner?  Should I go in the order of how they were written?

Thanks for writing.  These are interesting ideas to ponder.  Once we know the formula for obsession, we can churn out our own best selling novels, indie films, etc.

I still can't quite put my finger on the main ingredient (Why is it so good?)  (Is it something to do with tragedy?)

This is for sure: one key reason to the dramatic profusion of the fanbase surfaced is:

The short length.  It's so easy for newbies to catch up.  4 1/2 hours per season / two years - a great distraction for someone home bound for a day or two.  It's daunting to think I could loose 20 + hours of my life PER SEASON of "Lost" or "Walking Dead," and there's so many seasons!

The length may also account for everyone's level of thirst.  Reminds me of '80s fan response after "Return of the Jedi" ended.  I was too young to be obsessed but I witnessed debates among older friends. Folks talked about plots for sequels to "Return of the Jedi" throughout Ford's "Indiana Jones" series, on into the '90's.  It was, like, 6-7 hours of Star Wars was... just... insufficient.

"Game of Thrones" is 10 hours / season.  This is a happy medium, I think.  If only Sherlock could have that budget - I bet the actors would invest the extra time.

I think another reason for the growing fanbase may be the rating. Sherlock doesn't have the sex and violence of most popular shows, so it's something that can be played at family gatherings, watched in front of the kids / grandparents, or given as a gift, etc.  Of course, there are morons out there who think anything without R level sex / violence / language is low budget and boring.  I was once among them.

Maybe that's the reason for our obsessions.  The Creators love us and want us to be happy and also want to break our hearts over and over again.  The shows give our hearts a joyous roller-coaster ride.  We stay seated though the troughs have years in between.

Can anyone explain why the world is obsessed with BBC's Sherlock?

Everyone I know seems to either have the "A recent Sherlock? Oh, that's cute." condescending pat-on-the head reaction or the eye-sparkling "OMG Of freaking course!  Have you heard something about season 4?" almost teared up response.

Over the past month I converted from the first group to the second.  I haven't thought of Sherlock since 8th grade literature until last month, when I tried to think of something I could watch along with my parents during their visit.

We three are obsessed now.  And our tastes are very different.  Like, "Upstairs / Downstairs" on dusty VHS verses "Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood" newly torrented different.  Like, Mycroft (them) verses Moriaty (me) different.

This site has fans from many cultures and ways of life. What on earth is it that draws us to this show?

Aw.  To be greeted immediately by a handful of amazingly friendly Sherlockians... feels so heartwarming.

It's wonderful how inclusive and uplifting everyone is in the comments throughout the forum.

Thanks for welcoming a seemingly faceless, uneventful member to your ranks.

I guess each of us are potentially a pandora box - a set of mysteries wrapped in skin.  So I an excited to be among such interested folk.  I look forward to discovering more about some of you.

^__^  Thanks again.  - April
