I've been to the Barbican Theatre before and as far as I recall it is actually rather small and intimate so you are not that far from the stage. I haven't seen anyone using opera glasses there but it can't hurt to bring one just in case you want to have a close look at some details.

Thanks diva. I'll think about bringing one just in case. But good to know that it is rather small. The size of a room is always hard to judge from a photograph.

Has anybody listened to The Spire yet? I couldn`t find any posts about it. I`ve finished it twice now and I`m really impressed. One of the best things about being a fan of BC is that I learn about books and films I wouldn`t have touched otherwise.
His reading is absolutely brilliant and moving and he manages to make the main character relatable in a way that wouldn`t have happend had I only read it by myself. He always hits the right note in his performance, which must have been really difficult given the complicated narrative style of the novel.
I would really love to read other people´s thoughts about it.

In a few days nobody will talk about this anymore. The worst that could come of it, is that people who think Benedict is a pampared public school git who is out of touch with reality will rejoice because he used an outdated expression.
What is clear though is that if only people who are experts on a certain topic like racial prejudice or have personal experience with it can safely speak up for the cause in public, then that will certainly weaken the cause.
I´m sorry for Benedict because judging from his apology he is mortified. We have all made fools of ourselves at some point, surely, with the only difference being that it didn`t become a national talking point.
By the way, a question for my fellow german people on here: Is there an expression in English for "ins Fettnäpfchen treten"?

I`m sure you are right, SolarSystem. He probably is a pretty reasonable person, unlike me. I should have written: To me that would feel as if his work isn`t really valued. I know that ultimately all of these awards don`t matter anyway.

I know, SusiGo.
And I fear he won't have any luck at the Bafta`s either. I know it`s petty, but I somehow hope Michael Keaton wins the Bafta. Eddie Redmayne seems to be really nice and deserving of the award, but it would really look like a slap in the face for Benedict. Think about it: He doesn`t win for Hawking, he doesn`t win for Sherlock twice in a row, they don`t even nominate him for Parade`s End and then Eddie Redmayne wins....for playing Hawking.

After I had finished watching HLV for the first time, I felt as if I had been hit over the head. I wasn`t sure what to think of it at all and couldn`t believe the scale of the plot. Sherlock shooting Magnussen was the least of my worries. It just felt more like James Bond to me and completely out of tune with the rest of the episodes.(I should perhaps mention that by now it is one of my favorite episodes.)
The tarmac scene was pretty much the only scene I felt was pitch perfect even after the first viewing. I guess that probably was because I felt a little bit like poor John in the situation he finds himself in.
My interpretation of the dynamic between the two in this scene: John must be confused beyond believe by all that`s been happening to him in the past months. He is probably scared aswell because he doesn`t know whether he can trust his own judgement and decisions concerning himself, Mary and Sherlock. He seems more distant from Sherlock than ever and Sherlock respects that. He himself can`t really afford to get all emotional but has to get his game together, if he wants to stand the slightest chance on his undercover mission. I never saw the joke about Sherlock being a girls name as a cop out after failing to say something more important. More as Sherlock`s slightly selfish need to see John laugh once more and remind them of all the good times.
As for the handshake , that seems to me to be a really Sherlock-y thing to do. After all he is rather old fashioned in a lot of ways and this must appear to him to be the proper way to tell your best friend and partner that it has been an honour to know him. And he doesn`t let go immediately which shows that the whole thing is really heartfelt, I think.

If you wrap up the potato it might stay hot for a bit longer.
I really have no idea how to behave yourself properly in the situation he is in, this is just my feeling created by the things that I see through the media.

I know that, but in my opinion it would be better to at least try and avoid the stuff that can be avoided.

I agree with you, SolarSystem, that it is not his fault the whole thing with the interviews was blown out of proportion like this, but he should probably learn to say no to stuff like staged photobombing or celebrity impressions or whatever. I can´t imagine Martin Freeman would have a problem to do that and it has not done his career any harm.
The Allen Leech interview really made me cringe. That was unfortunate and he seemed really tired and frankly a little tipsy.
I hope after all the madness of the awards season he steps back from the crazy limelight and stays with his family, marries without telling the date to any outsiders and continues with his work. And there is no need to hype Hamlet in advance. The tickets are sold anyway, so simply do it and let the people decide if they like it or not. But that`s probably all easier said than done in his situation...

Hello everyone,
I´ve been following your interesting and insightful discussions on this forum for quite a long time. Now I have to finally gather up my courage and post something aswell.
Benedict and Sophie are obviously very much in love and completely happy with their situation. Sophie seems to be handling the crazy attention very professionally and cool. I don`t think she looks commanding or anything, just less reserved than in the first pictures immediately after the engagement. They will be a lovely familiy and I wish them all the happiness in the world.
That said, I can`t help but feel a little worried about the amount of publicity Benedict gets. The whole oscar campain was a mess in my opinion. They hyped the movie so much, always repeating the same stuff until everybody was utterly sick of it and the press did the rest by printing and reprinting the same quotes over and over because Benedict is the big poster boy now. There are some really nasty articles out there about Benedict beeing attention seeking in contrast to the other award contenders who did more "dignified" campaigning and will probably get more awards for it. I don`t want to spread negativity and I know that Benedict is not attention seeking and means every word he says about the importance of Alan Turing. But he tends to take up quite a lot of room in interviews together with other actors for example, because he talks so much when he feels passionately about a subject and gets a little overexcited. I`m just worried that the press will turn on him in the end, to paraphrase John Watson, and paint him as the pompous git with the crazy fangirls who gets all the attention for photobombing people at awards ceremonies while all the "serious actors" take home their awards.
Sorry for the rant, but I had to get this off my chest.

As you can see from this post, I very often worry far too much about the public image and what other people might think o

Hm, what are we supposed to say to that?

Yes, I know, compared to your two year long suffering I have nothing to complain about.
But don't worry, I will join you in the wait for series four practically right from the start.

Thank you all for your replies. That is what I was hoping to hear.

Hello everyone!

I'm a relatively new Sherlock fan as I only discovered the show last summer. It could have happened a little faster if a friend of mine, who knew about it and thought I might like it, hadn't actually forgotten to tell me about it. Oh well...at least I got around the painfully long wait for series three that way.

I don't usually post in forums because I'm a bit shy and also not a native speaker, but you are all so nice and welcoming that I finally gathered my courage and registered.

Sadly, I have to wait for two more weeks until I can finally watch the new episodes and join in the discussions. Thus far I've successfully avoided any spoilers but I'm slowly getting impatient and a little worried that the show might start to go downhill now that I've finally managed to catch up with it.

I'm very interested in how you all liked the new series in general without giving away any details of the plot.
