Other Adaptations » "My Elementary Review:" » January 22, 2014 8:25 pm |
I think Elementary is an ok show, is not bad but is there are better shows out there. I recently spent some days visiting a friend who really likes the show and I saw several episodes, I didn't hate it, but I won't keep watching it either.
The main reason the show doesn't interest me is that most of the time I didn't feel like I was watching a Sherlock Holmes adaptation, I read the books some time ago (and I will read them again as soon as I can) but I still remember a few things and when I watch Elementary I feel like I'm watching a bunch of characters that have almost nothing in common with their book counterparts, specially Watson.
And now I'll do the unfair thing and I will compare it to Sherlock because I want to talk about Elementary treating its female characters better (warning, spoilers ahead):
It doesn't.
First of all, I personally don't think that making Watson a woman means Elementary is a feminist show and Sherlock isn't. Yes, Watson is a woman, but she is also a woman who decided to quit her career as a surgeon because she made a mistake, yes it was a terrible mistake and I would never be able to understand how a doctor must feel when a patient dies because of them, but the fact is she allowed that mistake to rule her life, to the point where she decided to abadon a career that requires years and years of hard work because she couldn't deal with the fact that she made a mistake. Not only that, but she also went after a job that didn't make her happy, not because she wanted to help recovering addicts, no, it was because one of her ex-boyfriends became an addict while they were together and she thought her experience meant she was prepared to become a companion. If you think about it, that means she chose her job because she was romantically involved with an addict. There is also the fact that, as @swanpride has said, she doesn't have any other job apart from helping Sherlock, wich means she depends on a man who at the same time is living thanks to h

I this what US itunes offers? or did you find other videos? I'm asking because I don't have an itunes account and I'm a little lost, but if that's what you can buy from the US then you are right, those are not the episodes, they are documentaries about the series, the actual episodes are longer than that, you can see it in the UK itunes store.
Maybe you can buy them from the UK store but I'm afraid TeeJay is right, usually digital content has geographic restrictions, which means you won't be able to buy the episodes via itunes until they appear in the US store.

The software that hides the IP is not illegal per se, but using it means you are ignoring the distribution laws of the UK, and if you don't feel comfortable using an illegal source, I guess you don't want to do that either.
If you really want to see the episodes you can buy the third season in amazon.co.uk, it's cheap and it will be available in a few days, but unless your dvd player is region free, or you are willing to change the region of your computer, something you can only do a few times until is locked forever, I don't recomend it.

I also prefer the 90 minute format, it works for Sherlock and although I would like to have a new series every year, I think it's better to wait more time and get three awesome episodes rather than waiting a year for 12 or 22 "meh" episodes. A lot of tv shows with more episodes per season use filler or have a really slow pace just because they need to reach x minutes, but in Sherlock every scene is important.
Regarding series 4, I heard BBC is already wroking on it and that we might get it by Christmas, but I don't know if it's true.

The Sign of Three » Say to The Guardian that Sherlock hasn't jumped the shark!! » January 8, 2014 2:36 pm |
I loved the episode, I can understand why someone who watches Sherlock for the mistery and the cases might be dissapointed, but no way has the show "jumped the shark".
The episode was about the characters and not the crime, that seems to be the reason why some people hated it, but considering how much time has passed in the show and how quickly things are moving I think it was necessary to show how all the changes are affecting the characters, specially Sherlock, who is having a hard time adjusting to the new situation.
