Hi there, since I'm pretty new to the Sherlock world I haven't met anyone from the forum yet. But I'd love to one day.

Okay, we need a better group name than "NRW is Sherlocked" ...

Well, obviously I can re-name the group later. It is an open group, but if someone would prefer a closed one, I can change that one, too.

I'd love to join, though I prefere it to be closed group. Lovely idea, btw.

I didn't mean to upset you, Mary. German is my mother tongue too, but for reasons I can't even explain myself I have a great passion for everything English, which started in my early twenties.

I agree, BBC Sherlock is by far one of the best dubbed tv showes. But I also agree that the actors' voices are playing a big part when it comes to giving their characters a soul.

Edited to add:
There is something I prefer in the german episodes. It's the relation of voices/dialogues and background sounds/music. It's a general thing, I think. English films always have quite loud backgrounds, whereas german ones have louder dialogue. Is there a reason for that?

Interesting. I've never paid much attention to that. You just made me wanna check out myself. :-)

But as most will agree, nothing can ever top the original version. And I can only hope that those who are not so much into the beautiful English language will change their mind one day, learn it properly so that they will understand the differences between the OT and German version...

But in the end, the main problem is that the english accent is just not translatable. I am ready to bet that most German obsessive Sherlock Fans are the ones who watch movies and series in english regularly.

Oh I so agree with you on both. As an obsessive English language fan I can't get enough of all the different accents. I rarely watch anything in German.

Since I'm also a big fan of Shakespeare I love listening to some of the greatest voices: Nigel Bennett, Geraint Wyn Davis, Patrick Stewart and now Benedict Cumberbatch. Such a great voice!

Hm I know where ya coming from, that grave scene...ya right, that really was strange. Agreed.
Guess it's as strange as it was for me when I moved to Ireland and no matter where or who I called for an appointment they always called me by my first name, which is common over there.

But the atmosphere and the chemistry in the original version works much better as in the German one with the Sie. I don't think that it helps in the German dubbing. Funny, you are the first one who I know defending the Siezen.
No problem of course. If it is your opinion.

Believe me when I tell you that I've never been a fan of Siezen in general. But I was watching both seasons on two different nights with my sister, in German cause she doesn't speak English well. She said to me,  after I told her that they don't do that in English, the English language maybe doesn't have to make a difference cause it's how they talk to each other. I was like maybe you're right. So I watched it again in OT and IMO she was right.

I hope you don't mind me piping in to this interesting convo.
I have watched both the German and English version of Sherlock and I believe the reason why they still say Sie is cause it shows in some ways the kinda hidden respect they have for each other. You can hear it in English by the way they talk to each other (I know I know, Sherlock has a lovely way to make others feel like complete idiots). But still, I believe that's the only way to keep a special atmosphere between them, which in English is a lot easier than in German. And maybe because in the books they call each other Holmes and Watson, which back then wasn't unusual they tried to keep it as close to that as possible. And since this wouldn't really work nowadays they focused more on the keep-the-respect-as-good-as-possible thing...

Welcome to the forum!

Was it The Blind Banker you saw first? Would explain a lot.
Anyway, welcome to our lovely community. Have a nice time here and enjoy yourself.

Greetings from Bonn,
Mary

Actually it was TheHounds of Baskerville. I remember I turned the telly on and John Watson was running around the lab obviously very afraid of a gigantic hound. It quite confused me and after a short while I decided to switch channel. Now that I've seen the entire episode both in English and German I just love it.

Btw, my two favorite episodes would be A study in Pink and A Skandal in Belgravia.

Thanks for the welcome! :-)

Hi there,
I've been lurking here for a while now and thought it's time to introduce myself to you.
I grew up with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and always enjoyed the old movies. Even though I also liked the more different versions of SH that're shown in the movies and on the telly (I.e Elementary) I missed 'my' original Sherlock.
Anyway, a few yrs back I saw BBC's Sherlock, though only one episode, and for some strange reasons didn't like it much.
A few weeks ago I got to watch the first episode of BBC's Sherlock and it totally got me this time. I thought what a brilliant show, and I instantly fell in love with it. I had my Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson back, old mixed with new, just the way I like it...

A bit about myself:
I'm from Germany, lived in Ireland for a short period and have always been involved in various fandomes.

I ship the extraordinary but platonic friendship between Sherlock and John. I love Mrs Hudson and always feel sorry for Molly. ;-)

Looking fwd to chat with you all.

Shen.
