And now something sweet to go with it.

After seeing it mentioned with high praise at least a dozen times here I decided to look up and read "Alone On the Water.'

I know realize the severity of my mistake.  While beautiful and moving, I am far to new to Sherlock fandom to deal with the emotional after-effects of such a fan fic.

Now, I you'll all excuse me I intend to spend the next hour or two in the fetal position clutching my Tinkerbell blankie and sobbing WHY WHY WHY!

I know how you feel...Alone On The Water was the first Sherlock fanfiction I read, not very long after having seen both seasons (twice in quick succession ) and before joining the forum. I think I heard about it after a comment someone made on a Johnlock YouTube video. Anyway, I looked it up and read it...bad idea since I'd just watched The Reichenbach Fall (the second time) only the day before...I was already crying from that, and after having read Alone On The Water, my heart completely shattered

Anyway, these have probably been posted already, but anyway...two of my favs

*cries*

I've never ventured into this thread before as I didn't want to see any Johnlock smutty art. I finally looked today and came across this piece of absolutely beautiful artwork. Oh, the feels. I'll be coming in here more often now I realise I've been missing out. I guess I just presumed the art would be a bit too raunchy for me to look at but I now see the beauty of it xx

Oh yes, if you don't like the smut, there is some beautiful, sweet stuff.
Even in the absolute filth, some of the art work is amazing.

Smut/filth is in the eye of the beholder. Unless it's an image of someone being made to have sex against their will, or unless it's an adult-on-child crime, I almost never see smut.

A  lot of it is boring to me, actually. Same old-same old. I also don't like it when the artist doesn't have the skill to make the images look like Sherlock and John. If it just looks like any two guys, one with curly dark hair and one with straight light hair, that bores me. As does the Sherlock-is-always-on-top theme.

Like all art everywhere, beauty (or smut!) is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

Ok maybe I was a tad loose with my language!
I shall attempt to remedy this, by clarifying.
Obviously art appreciation is a very personal thing, tho I hope we could all appeciate technical ability.
I merely used the term smut as short hand for sexually explicit...it's wasn't meant to be derogatory, but rather humorous!
By ' beautiful', I meant the art that merely depicts the boys in  a close, loving, relationship- as opposed to sexual.

Nothing wrong with some nice smut

What is it about two guys at it that gets us like this?

It's not just about two guys - it's about THE two guys!

John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"
Mrs Hudson: "They don’t matter. You do."

I BELIEVE IN SERIES 5!

You've got a point, Tobe. I think it might have something to do with the fact that we prefer to see THE two guys at it to seeing one of them with a woman at it.

Just gonna be honest here and admit that I have found two men together erotic before.  But never this much.

I always find it erotic and particularly with these 2, but I'm quite open to other variations, too.
I certainly think it would make a great thesis study, why we find 2 male hearthrobs so attractive...I feel it's a modern phenomenon.

If we were talking about a male watching or reading about two hot women together, would we ask this question of him? Of course not. Relax and enjoy it.

Slash fic based on TV and movie characters has been around, that I know of, since the 1970s, since well before the internet was invented. Back then, fan fic authors typed up their stories and mailed them to each other or published them in various snail mail fan publications.

I think what's modern is that nowadays people talk about it more openly, the actors are all aware of slash fic and slash art, and fan works of all kinds have entered more into the mainstream. It's no one's dirty secret anymore, thank god, not like 30 or 40 years ago.

I remember AG!!!  I use to regularly contribute to a fanzine devoted to the characters of Harrison Ford.  Ah, memories.

And you make a very valid point about no one questionig men finding 2 women together being erotic.  Let's just all enjoy the smut!

Oh yeah I was aware of Kirk/Spock...
But I think it's more main stream these days.
