Did you see the tweet explaining Vatican Cameos?
It originated in WW2 and means ' Hit the deck'.
So presumably Sherlock would know that John would know it.

As John being beyond the line of fire anyway Sherlock's "Vatican cameos!" appear, strictly speaking, superfluos.
Nice touch though to an untold story mentioned in canon's "The Hound of the Baskervilles".

There is no evidence, in fact, that the phrase was ever used during WW2. The only references that can be found to it are on Tumblr and the like. No historical sources mention it at all. The phrase is merely a nod to the mention of the Case of The Vatican Cameos in canon.

They are hilarious! I could seriously post several pages worth of mockups. I'll have to space them out. Some of them just scream 'we need season 3 already!'
