Er, can somebody explain it to me, please?!

Martin played Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Bilbo had a nifty short sword called Sting. The sword was glowing when orcs or goblins were nearby.

Er yes, I have seen the Hobbit several times!
I knew all about the sword, except I did not know it was called Sting...hence me confusion.
Anyhow it alerted to goblins or orcs...which I suppose could mean death.
But a skull is a bit more definite!

I saw the movies only once (and quite a while ago) so I don't know whether the sword's name was mentioned in them at all. I remember it from the books, it was very definite there.

That is what I suspected.
Thank you.
Glad I have not gone totally mad.
I only ever read the beginning of the book.

I totally agree with you... and just in case anyone still have doubts about this... take a look at the umbrella, pen and phone in what was meant to be one continuous scene. *Shakes head*

I recommend that you read all of it and The Lord of the Rings, too, besleybean!

I certainly don't think every single scene has been MP.
Incidentally on the dvd commentary, Mark and Steven discuss that Mycroft has several offices.

Just seen your post kgreen...er no thank you, not really my thing.

I certainly hope not. They've got to be pretty sloppy to get all of those things wrong... along with everything else that's already been pointed out to date

I don't know how Mike's office can be all MP. Don't understand what would be the significance of that - that Sherlock never talks to his brother apart from in his head?
I would be upset about the continuity errors but I just don't see how the office being MP advances the story further.
Maybe if everything in this ep is MP... but that would be upsetting too.

Yeah, I too have noticed that the painting started glowing so intensively at some point that the glow illuminated the wall next to it O.o

Funny you mention The Sign of Three... I never thought the titles confusing since it's abbreviated TSoT, but thats for the explanation because I've asked myself a couple of times why ppl also abbreviate TST as T6T.

I['m glad, I could help
You were right about glowing - I have made the bigger set:
The glowing increases incredibly.

I agree. But it also means, that what we see, is not the pure "reality".

Does it?
I would allow them a bit of artistic license.

That's the question - there is definitely an unreal feel at times, and also things which are clearly not real at all (Mycroft's wall exploding, for instance).  I think there might be a distinction between "looks unreal/dreamlike" and "didn't actually happen".   I think some things are kind of mind palace and Sherlocks's POV, like John asking him to be his best man in TSOT - they happened, but maybe not exactly like that.  We're getting the gist of it, in a way that is artistic or tells a story.

To be honest, I'm kicking myself now for devoting so much time to trying to work out what was under the surface in HLV, when it turns out that the surface reading is correct (going by TST).   Well, I say I'm kicking myself, but actually it was fun doing it!  What else would we have been doing for three years!

Sorry, I was one of the boring ones who took all HLV at face value and so far I feel I've been justified...possibly that's why I'm doing  the same with TST.
Though I have said, I love the idea of the whole episode being Sherlock speaking to Ella...
Though I don't see how that works when she implied he hadn't done much talking at all!
Unless that's when he starts...

Ehm... actually, such continuity mistakes are very common. There are remarkably few in Sherlock, mostly because they know we are watching every single shot with microscopes. But we shouldn't make them into new conspiracies.

I am so glad you said that.

True.  My guess is that it was filmed over two days, and during the night one of the cleaners sat at the desk pretending to be Mycroft (well, you would, wouldn't you?), and accidentally disrupted it.

I'm also an old crab, but I'm an old crab interested in movie making and behind-the-scenes addict. I spent a whole evening once figuring out the exact spots where the roof scene was shot.

Then, I am as compulsive at setting people facts right, as some of them at creating theories.

BTW, If you need a laugh before TLD, google "continuity errors" or look them up at IMDB.com under goofs. If you start with Gladiator, nothing will surprise you anymore. :D
