I don't know, but I think they seem to be wanting to give us things in bits and pieces, rather than all at once.   There's going to be some sort of clue in the title, but if it was too spoilery to be revealed, then it couldn't be published in TV guides, etc.   I suspect it might be more sensational than something like "Garridebs", but maybe not quite as sensational as the tongue-in-cheek examples I gave above. 

Also, I don't think "The Three Garridebs" is the most exciting story.  It does have that lovely scene (whether you're a friendship or a Johnlock fan!) which Steven Moffat has talked about, but I don't think the story sounds so gripping as some, and wouldn't be such an audience draw as, say, "The Hound of Baskerville".   So I don't think they'd choose that as a title for that episode and then hold back on us (if it was a more boring title, they'd just tell us!).   Of course, I'm not at all certain and now I'm just waiting to be proved wrong!   But it may well be that they mix up elements from different stories, even if they want to do Garridebs (His Last Vow was more about the Milverton story than about His Last Bow, and I'm curious about whether we'll see something similar with The Lying Detective.   The Thatchers story in John's blog is fairly similar to the Napoleons one it's based on, but we don't know if that will be the case in S4). 

Anyway, going off at a tangent, they had mentioned that we'd see more hints of Rathbone's Holmes in this series.  I suspect they meant the feel of it rather than the plots, but I've been rewatching some of the old ones, and speculating quietly to myself (I'd forgotten what fun they are!).

I am was quite shocked as well. But please have a look at this post. The quote has been taken out of context. He did not even mention the "next series", he was talking about the "last series" which is not the quite the same. And nothing the team has said during SDCC or Sherlocked pointed in this direction. We should take everything with a grain of salt. (I think the linked post is valid without believing in Johnlock as well. The quotes have been taken out of context, not from the article as a whole).

Thank you Susi, I had a feeling (and a hope) that it was something blown out of proportion.

And didn't they say somewhen and somewhere that s4 will end with a huge cliffhanger (again)?
Someday (sadly) this show will be over but I must admit that I mentally prepared myself at least for season 5. Of course we don't knoe about season 4 yet but I have a strong feeling that the show wouldn't feel complete.

I think it's possible for them to leave it open...
I've known other series do that, where it could be continued...but also could be left.
Sometimes a series end is forced upon a show, as happened with Atlantis.
It ended with a literal cliffhanger, though the official BBC statement was that no more episodes would ever be made.
