I see what you mean--but I think they are trying to do both, and I think it works that way. Both Moffat and Gatiss have said (and indeed, several of the actors have as well) that they want to entertain the audience now and also send them back to the original stories. One of the ways they do that is to make it known that they are referencing the stories, so that if you read the stories and go back for a re-watch you'll pick up extra goodies. So that's also a way of encouraging people to buy the disks for repeated viewings--a not-bad marketing strategy. Me, I'm a decades-old fan of the originals, and I always enjoy noticing new call-backs to the original stories. But that said, those call-backs don't interfere with the main plots, and they they don't interfere with the character development, so  I find them clever and engaging.
