Indeed, it was a good movie. Some cheap laughs, but okay, I'll forgive them that.

Doesn't Holmes fend off a woman's advances by claiming to be in a relationship with Watson?

Yes.

A brilliant movie in so many ways - Gatiss has lauded it in public too!

I just watched the 1970 "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes."  Honestly, I felt like I was watching another episode of Sherlock!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0puHGLAoCc

I watched after hearing Mark Gatiss call the movie "=mediuma template of sorts for Stephen Moffat and me as we made our adaptation for the BBC."

I then discovered the parallels between Private Life and BBC Sherlock were made into gif's on tumblr.

Private Life has even more johnlockiness than the BBC Sherlock:

The banter between the characters ... It's like watching another episode of the BBC Sherlock!  (Sorry, I can't figure out how to change image sizes)

Lastly, here's a link to "Private Life"'s Mycroft, Christopher Lee, describing Mycroft:

Steven Moffat: Season four is “going to be … [about] consequences. Chickens come to roost ... Things … coming back to bite you.”

For  me, " the private life of Sherlock Holmes" is good, but not better as some other adaptations. The first scenes are fun and I guess  that's what Moffat and Gatiss like and got inspired by, the the rest of the movie is a "classical" Holmes's investigation ( as far as an investigation can be classical with Sherlock Holmes).
I' m fond of " a study in terror" and of the first Rathbones movies, too, ans the series with Peter Cushing as Holmes ( didn't see all the episodes, tough, some are really hard to find or even considered as lost)

Oh yes it was on our Scottish news, too.
As a resident of Scotland, I was concerned something had happened to dear old Nessie.
