I rest my case....see this is what happens: fan fic then becomes Canon.
It just seems an odd thing to introduce as a meme.
Still, whatever floats your boat, I guess!

See: The Sherlock Fandom Glossary, a great resource for all questions like that:
Red Pants Monday: n. A meme made popular on Tumblr by artists who post original drawings and paintings (and also fic and even NSFW cosplay) depicting John wearing red y-front briefs, and usually little else. Red Pants Monday is not only a weekly excuse for porn, but also an homage to BNF Reapersun, who was the first to draw John in his red undies. The drawings sometimes include Sherlock stealing the red pants or Sherlock in his own pair of briefs -- these with a large yellow and black bee on the front.

Oh my, Harriet, that's even 'better' than I thought!

Yes, I know, without that resource I would have had a hard time here

But I still wonder "why red pants"? Why did the author get this particular urge?
Need more data.

The red pants aren't canon and never can be. In this fandom, original SH canon is everything that appeared in ACD's work. Our modern BBC canon is everything that appeared in the 6 eps we've seen so far. What you're talking about, the stupid red pants from someone's fan fic? That's fanon. And oh, boy! That's what fan fic exists FOR, to create strange new worlds never before explored by humankind, a la Star Trek, lololol. To those who read it, fanon can seem more real than canon, many times. But never the twain shall meet, as they say.

Ah yes fanon and I forgot how much I love that word!

I think it's great that you can create something in this fandom (and that surely goes for other fandoms as well) and suddenly it's all over the place. And whether I 'like' those red pants or not, I just love the fact that someone came up with this and now it's fanon. We'll never get to see those pants in the show (which is a pretty good thing, I suppose ), but everytime I stumble over them in fan art I really have a huge smile on my face. Just because... it's a teensy bit crazy...

I always thought the otters were from CP, not from Sherlock.

Good point.
But you get my drift
And also, I meant in relation to hedgehogs!

Well, yes. The hedgehogs have taken a life of their own. The otter thing is quite confusing as Benedict is sometimes compared to an otter as well. These people should just study "Ottery St. Mary".

Push over on the OCD bench and make room for me, I guess, bb. I hate those stupid otters. Ugh.

CP? What is?

"Cabin Pressure", the radio comedy series with Benedict. There is one episode where he and his colleagues speculate how many otters you can fit in the aeroplane they're flying.

Cabin Pressure is genius
"I think we'd be better off replacing Arthur with an otter anyway."
"Hey!"

And I love Douglas' explanation why the place is called Ottery St. Mary.
"You see St. Mary is the patron saint of Devon, and she, of course, was famously martyred by being eaten alive by otters."

Must confess I think the otters are adroable.
Have Cabin Pressure coming from Amazon. Can't wait to listen.

It's brilliant.
