Someimes it has to be difficult enough for Martin not to laugh...

John: "Have you spoken to Mycroft, Molly, uh, anyone?"
Mrs Hudson: "They don’t matter. You do."

It's a testament to how good an actor he is...to not smile at that sight!

Dean - "I'm not happy about it. But I got to move on. So I'm gonna keep doing what we do...while I still can. And I'd like you to be there with me."

Sam - "I'm your brother, Dean, if you ever need to talk about anything with anybody, you got someone right here next to you."

I presume, then, that you read fan fic. Because the shows really are not *about* that-- their friendship and domestic situation is included, yes, but the show is about crime-solving. But fan fic is often centered around their friendship or romance, depending on which kind of fic you read. Fan fic will give you your fill!

Re: Finally: The Sherlock/John picture thread

I think Mark and Steven have made it clear that the friendship is central to BBC Sherlock.
This is what I love most.

Yes, I do read fan fic, but I also see all of those things in the show, even if the show is not really *about* these things and they are just included in small portions. I saw those things in the show even before I started reading fan fic. And even if it wasn't Mofftiss' intention, they somehow succeeded in showing me all those things. I see in the show that John sometimes is annoyed with Sherlock and vice versa, I also see them laughing together, I see a horrified Sherlock when John's life is threatened.

So yes, the show is about Sherlock and John solving crimes together. But there's so much more. And I dare say: if there weren't more to it, then it probably wouldn't be the success it is.

For the show in itself, I ship the bromance. But I am very partial to some fanfic

And to be honest, I may not watch it!
The friendship is canoncial, after all.

Re: Finally: The Sherlock/John picture thread

Well, if it were just about solving crimes, then to me it would very likely just be another crime show. Yes, it would be based on ACD's Sherlock Holmes, but that alone wouldn't be a reason for me to watch it. (I'm not really a fan of crime shows, they are basically all the same to me.)
What makes it special and interesting for me is how the friendship between Sherlock and John is depicted. Yes, I'm a Johnlocker, but I don't want them to kiss or end up in bed together on the show. It's absolutely fine for me to read that in fan fics. But nevertheless I see so much more in the show than pure crime solving.

Obviously. Not being blind, deaf and totally stupid, I certainly don't think it's purely a crime show.

The S/J relationship is something ACD came up with, and the man was a genius; the Sherlock showrunners were smart enough to continue with what ACD set into motion over 100 years ago. But the real geniuses of the BBC show were the casting people who found those two actors, and the actors themselves, who are so skilled, they make us believe that their characters are real. Genius of all kinds, all around.

My point, lost in this barrage of comment, was that if someone totally gets off on the S/J relationship, whether they're into friendship or slash,  they can get more, all they could ever want, in fan fic, something the show will never be able to supply to anyone in enough quantity.

Sherlock is intriguing for many reasons, but one of them is that he considers himself above the law. All cops, lawyers, and other powers that be are simply "idiots", to be outsmarted and manipulated for his own purposes. He even manipulates Molly in that way, using the lab equipment and other facilities at the hospital as though he'd paid for them himself.

In that way, he's no different from Moriarty. But Moriarty KNOWS that he [Moriarty] is evil-- in contrast, he considers Sherlock to be "on the side of the angels", although Sherlock himself said he does not consider himself to be "one of them." So, anyway....  Sherlock the pickpocket or thief or playing fast and loose with breaking and entering is not surprising-- simply a means to an end.

One of the most interesting things about all the incarnations of Sherlock is to watch his fancy footwork (both physical and mental) as he makes his unique way from A to Z, solving the current problem (his case, whatever it is) at hand, outmaneuvering everyone else. And if he has to break some idiotic law that applies to everyone else except him, so be it!
