Sadly most detective series ARE depressing D: Sherlock seems to have about everything though, sarcasm, humor, seriousness, just the perfect balance of practically every emotion you could possibly go through.

The BBC has good writers, they're generally speaking not afraid of character development, and they have a great sense of continuity, so that the Sherlock you watch in ep 1.1 is the same character as the one you watch in ep 2.3.
Added to that is the fact that the showrunners/writers are genuine fanboys of ACD and the original canon. They know it well, understand it, love it to death, and they want to honor it in this new Sherlockian 'verse.
Quality, all around, in writing, directing, acting, all of it. And it shows.

We definitely need more of these outstanding people! People who aren't afraid to try something new. Expanding and moderninzing a character such a Sherlock like that, truly amazing. It's hard to find good shows and movies nowadays, they are usually just remakes of older movies etc.
It's good to know there are still those who do their research and try to keep characters as original yet new as possible.

I hail from the United Kingdom. England, to be exact.
I'm surprised that there isn't a higher percentage of Brits here, to be honest (well, at least according to the poll).

You're welcome to add to it anytime. Being from germany, I had to google it. Now I know where Shropshire is. This forum is good for my general education.

I'm from Akron, Ohio. We used to be the rubber capital of the world, but now we're just the capital of foul mouthed beer drinkers.
