Thanks for the rec. Sounds very good.

Maybe romance overdose, though

Can there be such a thing as "romance overdose"?

Yes, thus only 4 of 5 (not kidding!)

Oh, definitely. All I can tell you is, you'll know it, when you read it. It's dreadful.

Oh, then I'll need to read it to experience romance overdose.
Susi, please tell me my new fic is not heading towards romance overdose.
No, forget what I've just written. Warn me definiety if it is!

Romance overdose (and I luvs me some romance, so don't go thinking I don't, lol) in slash fic comes in several forms.
I personally can't stand it when an author makes the guys into women with penises *rolls eyes* or insists on making one of the men the little wifey. Good lord, save us. Writing slash, we have to be careful to not make them sound like women-- although they're gay, they're still men, lol, and they need to sound like men. Sticky sweet endearments and talking incessantly about their feelings, etc? Sorry, but that's just not something that a large majority of men, gay or straight, do, even if someone were holding a gun to their heads.
As I said, IMO most people can tell romantic overload when they read it-- if you find yourself rolling your eyes and wondering what planet these characters just arrived from, well... there's a clue.

Schmiezi, it tends to the romantic side but there's no overdose. Not for me. Not housewifery, etc.

Well, the tendency to romantic overload I see in that fic is quite different. Based on the plot, mostly. Especially near the end.

You guys have read madlori's Performance in a Leading Role, yes? (maybe not you, Harriet, I know you're no fan of AU). She makes her characters *work* to get to the romance, and I find that satisfying. They eventually get to the "I love you" bits, and the tendency to tear up when really moved by something (love, sex, relief to finally be in each other's arms, etc), but she drags them (and the readers) through a lot of pre-slash angst before she gets them there. I dunno-- every author has her own Sherlock and John, and each author gets to decide how to handle them. Back when I used to write (in another fandom), I likened it to playing paper dolls with my guys-- I got to dress them up, make them move, put words in their mouths, and it was fun. Some readers thought my stuff was very sticky sweet, others ate it up with a spoon, and then there was everybody in between. As authors, the characters we write about become our own, and therefore we have the right to do with them as we will. And let's face it, there's a ton and a half of fan fic out there, so it's easy enough to just move on, if we find outselves stuck in something that's not our cuppa.

Phew! Relieved to hear that!
AG, I think I know what you mean. Most of the time I only read fics that are recommended here, so most of them are exactly what I like to read.
But I can't stand Johnlock fics that includes one of them or both being a parent. I never figured out why, but I think it's because these fics tend to make one of them "wifey" and turns them into women, sort of.

Have you read madlori's The Blog of Eugenia Watson? Madlori writes John and Sherlock as co-fathers to the teenaged GW so well, along with John's ex-wife, who is Genie's mom. The story is told from Genie's POV, and you know how kids don't want to think about the 'rents ever having sex, lol. Anyway, it's so well done, and no one is turned into a woman with a penis. I can really recommend it for you to try. It might at least partially change your mind about the parental AU kind of thing. Or not. But I enjoyed it.
Almost 100K words, 48 chapters, the story is complete.

Now, my plan is to read:
1. John Watson's Twelve Days of Christmas (to experience romance overdose firsthand)
2. The Blog of Eugenia Watson (to see if I can overcome my prejudice against paternal fics)
Good thing I will finish my current reading matter today. :-)

1. In progress. I like it very much so far.
2. I have the same problem and I'm still undecided.

Bit quiet around here. I found another one.
Three years later Sherlock returns to only to find everything is different, especially John. Perhaps the only way to repair their friendship is to turn it into something more. A slightly different take on the John/Mary relationship. I really liked it. Warning: sexual content.

Thank you Susi - I will give it a try right now.

Sherlock and John hunt a serial killer who uses The Nine Circles of Hell as his modus operandi.
This is a alternate universe fusion casefic based on the movie Se7en and Dante Alighieri's Inferno.
Please read the warnings - the descriptions of the bodies/crime scenes are quite graphic
Thank you for posting this one. I didn't feel like christmas, and Eugenia's story was too homey for my current mood, so I gave this one a try. It's dark and "established relationship", but something's going wrong between John and Sherlock. I'ver nearly finished it and would recommend it to everyone who doesn't mind the really gruesome murders.

Ok here's an announcement - A Study in Doubles is finally complete! She's been slaving over that one for quite some time. I might go back and read the whole series again!
On another note, I've been reading my way through ScopesMonkey's Sugarverse on FanFic.net. I'm enjoying them. Her profile page gives you the order in which to read them. Some are very fluffy - you have been warned!

Thanks for the update, Wholocked.
Now this is NOT a rec: I read a fanfic which had a pairing I hadn't encountered before - John and Mycroft. It wasn't mentioned in the description so I gave it a try thinking it would be Johnlock, not Johncroft. Very strange experience. Mycroft punishing himself physically for having let his brother down and then a blooming love affair between him and John. Oh my, this meant overworking my imagination, definitely.

Was that a post-Reichenbach? I think I have seen that but haven't read it
