I like the decision that some wardrobe guy made years ago, to make him nasty neat, every thread in place, but to leave off the tie. I mean, Sherlock goes out pretty dressed up most of the time, but never a tie. A tie pin? I don't wear ties!

I think he sometimes looks very good with a tie. For example in TTSS or at public events. But in Sherlock I prefer him without a tie. Just think we wouldn't get to see his neck.

I agree. Even as much as I adore the macbre, there's something wrong about a man voluntarily tying a noose around his neck! Doesn't matter how attractive he is, IMO.
