Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

That's true. We don't use it so often but prefer the equivalent of "like" for things like food, weather, etc. And we also have a distinction between "lieben" and "lieb haben". E.g. children would prefer the second expression.
In German we say "Mensch" (man in the sense of human being) and "Mann" (man meaning the gender). In English and French (homme) it's the same word. So in this case you could say German's a bit more emancipated.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

Must I really? Linguistics wasn't exactly my specialty at uni.  And to be honest I wouldn't want to read gender-neutral novels.

Re: Favourite Sherlock/Benedict pictures

I was just thinking what would happen if ideas of feminist linguistics were applied to every text, literature included. I haven't read anything by her, I must admit. Are they really funny? - Er, I think we're going a bit off topic here.

Maybe it isn't THAT cold. He may wear the white coat over his Belstaff just in case he's becoming cold because of waiting and standing around and waiting ...

I have to make a declaration: I'm sure you'll have noticed my new sig. Thanks to Harriet for the wonderful editing and making the frame disappear.
