Keeping it Canonical.

Hi guys.
I know, fancy me being here, hey?!
I don't do fan fic much, as many of you know.
I do have one in the pipeline.
I was wandering around the playground at work, today and suddenly began pondering this question...so I thought I would bring it to the forum.
Not  a pleasant subject, but it regards the deaths of Sherlock and John.
I don't know how many writers include this aspect in their work, but if they do:  do they keep it canonical and have Sherlock going first?
Would anybody think it wrong to go against Canon and have John passing away first of all?

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

What an interesting an unexpected question. Other than his originally-planned death falling over the Reichenbach Falls, I don't know if I ever knew that Sherlock ever died for good in any of the original stories. But if you say that's the case...I guess whether you want to stick with that bit of the originals depends on the version of the characters.
In the Sherlock series, John is older than Sherlock (as Martin in older than Benedict), so unless something were to happen to Sherlock, it would seem more likely for John to die first. I don't know about age differences in other adaptations, except that in The Seven Percent Solution (that I have admittedly not seen much of yet) they seem fairly close in age if memory serves, and I don't know how common that is compared to other adaptations.
But if the two of them keep solving crimes together, getting into danger, either one could go first. They could even go together...

I feel like I said a bunch of things without offering much help, so sorry if this was all for nought.

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Yes, I confess I simply went by age...
in my latest pathetic attempt:  both the Holmes parents and Mrs Hudson have already departed, I have Mycroft depart(I fit Greg and Mike in somewhere, too)and then I would go on(when I reach that point) to having John leave us.
No honestly I am interested in all input.
I simply did just wonder what the general view was...if there is one!

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Since Holmes's death is not mentioned anywhere in the original stories I think you are absolutely free to do whatever you like. I am not sure about the age gap in Canon and as for Martin and Benedict, they are only five years apart. So you can choose whatever fits best into your story.

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Must be an illusion I'm under....I was convinced Watson refers to Holmes' death in canon...
Anyhow, I've just been having a snigger to myself...
Because really, considering nothing else in my fic would be canonical- I really don't know why I focused on that particular aspect!

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Thought I might stick this latest question in here...
In terms of using the various Holmes' homes!
That is the buildings:
we have 221B of course, Mycroft's house, his office etc...
Does anybody know if we have a particular name for the Holmes' parents house?
Or do we just call it that?!
I tend to refer to it as the country house, or the country home...
but I did wonder if anybody had given it a name?

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

I have yet to come across it in any original stories. I don't recall it ever having a name in the show.

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Never heard one, but I think we should name it now!  Suggestions?

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

The house from HLV?     A bit of googling found the actual house is called Trewallter Fawr.  My Welsh is rusty, so I only know that "fawr" means big (mutated from mawr, I believe).  https://www.walesonline.co.uk/lifestyle/welsh-homes/house-featured-bbcs-sherlock-up-14350598

The googling also brought up this article https://www.countryliving.com/uk/homes-interiors/property/news/a941/masongill-cottage-sherlock-holmes-for-sale/ on Arthur Conan Doyle's mum's house.  So how about Masongill Cottage?

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Interesting finds. I agree it would be cool if in the world of the show the house had the name of Doyle's mum's house.

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

Thought I might as well stick this in here.
Can anybody remember if Sherlock has a chair in his bedroom?
Not for any rude purposes I hasten to add...
just for Rosie to sit on....in later life!

Re: Keeping it Canonical.

I don't think he does.  You can see most of the room in ASIB and I can't see chair?  There is room for one, though.

You may have seen the same stills and come to the same conclusion as me!
