Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

I had a look at tumblr (I have real difficulty navigating it!) after that last link, and came across this (have also posted it in the thread where we were talking about Irene):
https://chasingtoby.tumblr.com/post/161136773193/sherlocked-irene

There was also some really cute stuff about Benedict's parents, but I can't find it now!   They sounded like typical embarrassing parents - in a good way!

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

It was something about ... that when Benedict was little they used to pretend to be kissing if he was watching TV and they wanted him to come to the table, and it worked.  And apparently one time he said something about them not needing to do that sort of thing any more because they had him.

The other one was something Timothy said about Wanda summing up their relationship as a bit of nookie that got out of hand!

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Yes!  It reminded me of the scene in TEH where Sherlock is hustling his embarrassing parents out when John visits!

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Absolutely love that scene!
And even as a non-Johnlocker, it really does make me laugh.
It honestly is like Sherlock is saying:  Dad, Mum, please...a bit of privacy- I have a boy here!

Sherlock cornered in Appledore or in that TFP mental facility - yes, he didn´t have more options left under blackmail and threats from his enemies.
Mary, on the other hand, was free to choose plenty of options. She could take Sherlock´s offer of help, for example.
No, no - she deliberately chose the worst option and the one most probable to kill Sherlock.

Liberty wrote:

Sherlock has previously given John something that he thought was an unknown, hallucinogenic and possibly dangerous drug without his knowledge, then deliberately tries to terrify him, to help with a case - also not a great thing to do.

It was established in THOB that sugar Sherlock originally thought to be drugged didn´t contain any drugs after all.
He only wanted to drug John but never managed to bring this idea into effect.
No effect on John = no crime.

Liberty wrote:

But it means, I think, that he can understand Mary doing something that will be painful and possibly dangerous in the short-term.  It makes sense.

It only makes sense if she is a coldblooded killer with no regard towards others.

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

No, I mean it makes sense that Sherlock would be able to understand and forgive Mary.   And he doesn't think of her as having no regard for others.   He knows that she called the ambulance.  (And I suppose he's proved right in TST when she saves his life).

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

It seems to be a sport among some fans to dislike Steven Moffat, and that presses all my wrong buttons. From everything I've ever seen and read of him, I think he is intelligent, funny and quite self-aware.

And if anyone has ever seen any interview with him, they need to know that they can't take a written quote as is. He often makes jokes, and you have to hear the tone of words before making judgement.

I always like a balanced and nuanced discussion, and the moment anyone goes all the way to the one end, I go all the way to the other end. Some fans treatements of Moftiss is downright horrible.

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

I notice it a lot.
Nobody is claiming they are perfect saints, living genius or even delicate flowers.
But Mark and Steven are decent and talented and some of us come to this boards as fanatics of our favourite show.
I am all for robust debate, but I do get a bit sad at prolonged Mark or Steve bashing!

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Couldn't agree more. It again reminds me of the saying "I am the biggest fan there is - no one hates this more than me!" (Sometimes that seem to be aimed more at the creators than the show itself, seeing as the creators were so rude as to not live up to the fantasy of every individual fan).

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

It pushes my wrong buttons that you can´t criticise bad writing or point out the opinions you disagree with in this fandom because some fans treat the writers as some infallible idols.
They can screw up their work like anybody else, no matter how awesome personal characteristics they may otherwise possess.

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Nope, they are not infallible. They are not idols. And I have stated before that I do not agree with every choice they have made.

But there is a difference between grey and black and white.

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

OK, but that does not change one thing on the objective fact that you just can´t shoot people "nicely" exactly like you can´t cut off their heads "nicely"....

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Actually, you can. I haven't heard the way he said it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was said quite humorously (is that correctly spelled?). Even so, I do understand what he means. She shot him the best way she could between her selfish needs (scaring him and incapacitating him) and her wanting him to live (shooting him the best place for his surrvival).

But we've been through the shooting tons of times before and we will never agree on it. And that's fine. I don't mind that. And I don't mind you disagreeing with their choices - sometimes I do too. But I can't stand black-and-white attitudes, especially towards those who are the creators of - supposedly - the show you are a fan of. Why else would you be here?

(No, that doesn't mean that the only choices you have are full adoration or full hate - there is something called "grey" and "nuanced". And I would love if we could have more of that on this forum).

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Criticizing writers choices is one thing, calling them trolls, or liars, etc - another.
I like them "trolling" tbh, It's funny, even if sometimes frustrating. Why should they ever tell us anything? They didn't make a scientific documentation about something crucial for survival of humanity, but a fictional show meant for entertainment. It's their fanfic.
And yes, Steven live and Steven transcribed on paper are two different things.

Re: Sherlocked - The Official Sherlock Convention

Good point. It's their fanfic. That sort of boils it down, I think.

Thank goodness!  And I hope they won't wait until Una Stubbs is just a fond memory before producing more episodes either.

I am so glad to hear that.

What worried me is that there seems to be the question whether or not it is all right to comment on Steve Moffat in a negative way. It can't be right that you get the feeling you are only allowed to post agreement. :-/

Maybe a mod could make clear if it's okay to criticize him or not. :-(
