Kazza, in the photo you posted of Jim in the Tower, he is breaking the glass with the fire extinguisher as a right-hander I.e. with his right hand and arm swinging back, left foot forward and left hand and arm as a stabiliser. Even more confusing!
Offline
But it's not a movement that needs dexterity really. Nor a huge amount of force; too much force and he'd end up in the chair upside down nearly.
Look a lot of people do things 'either hand' I can't see it as being any kind of oddity.
Offline
But for gross motor movemeNt like that it would feel very weird to do it the other way round, really awkward. For most people that is?
Offline
Not really. Gross motor skills deal with muscle tone etc, not left or right handedness & therefore dexterity.
He holds it with both hands; both using force.
Frankly I think the stance is for a better picture. We see him rather than bits of him with a fire extinguisher in front of his body.

Probably right about the photo framing thouh colud have just placed the camera the other side, they do for other shots. But gross motor does have handed and footed-ness, is there such a word. Watch a footballer or rugby player kick a ball. Stance, planting foot, hand-eye. Which side you stand etc.

Mmm, I don't think taking the shot from the other side would have worked. Framing and balance would have been weird. Or maybe I'm just over thinking it.

There's not much to over think on this one really huh?
Bottom line, its the same person, nothing says otherwise.

Lol I meant I was ovethinking the shot angle

Yeah I got that, just really posting a final say from my point of view.

To be fair the focus on the tea-cup placed before Jim in Sherlock's flat does dictate something to us.
It may be Jim is just cheekily goading Sherlock by switching which side he presumed Sherlock presumed him to use for holding - not as obvious as when he sits in Sherlock's seat but perhaps in the same vein.
When Sherlock and John meet him whilst confronting Kitty he uses his right hand to establish a physical guard between him and Sherlock - impulses, if indeed it was an impulse, would normally favour the stronger side - which was his right in this case.
It may indeed be nothing whatsoever - just remember that in 'A Study in Pink' Sherlock is prepared to take a potentially poisonous pill with the cabbie who was well aware of bluffs and double bluffs, watching him place the pills on the table and then subtly suggest through tiny pushes and eyes indication lets us know that Sherlock at least felt up to a challenge as intricate and nuanced, perhaps his tango with Moriarty contains many similar 'games'.

I dunno why you guys don't get it; he's left handed. It's plainly obvious.
The teacup incident was a little play; Moriarty took the opposite seat to the one Sherlock indicated; in return Sherlock offered him a cup turned the wrong way. Subtle play going on.

mOr1arty, those are two good points. They took the trouble to establish Jim as a leftie (not only the teacup, he also handles the knife with his left hand), so I expect them to use this at some point for more than just the mental chess game, Sherlock and Jim enjoy to play with each other. And, since they establish Jim as a leftie, it would be a gross oversight of the makers, if they let Andrew Scott handle the diamond and the phone the way he does it in the Tower. As I said, I'm a leftie and have done a fair bit of research on the subject. No leftie would handle the phone and the diamond like that. (the foot preference doesn't matter a whole lot in this scenario, because the foot preference in many cases is different to the hand preference). Also, as tobeornot221b pointed out, the guy at the pool in Scandal seems to handle the phone as a right handed guy would do.
Of course, it's quite possible to chalk up all those observations as consistency mistakes, but again, why then did they take the trouble to establish Jim Moriarty as a leftie? And since they did, I would expect them to show him consistently as a leftie. Everything else is a mistake.
From a script writer's perspective, the fact, that Moriarty has a brother in canon, might be important. Also creative ideas don't come out of thin air. You make your stories up from material that surrounds you and might be potential fodder for your imagination. Personally I find it very intriguing, that Andrew Scott had a double role as twins in the 2006 play 'Dying City' . Whoever is interested, should read the Variety review (I tried to link it, but it didn't work; but you find it easily, if you google Variety Reviews Dying City May 28 2006; mOr1arty was so nice to give us a link in his following comment). One scene, they describe, I found very interesting: Andrew Scott goes into a bed room as one character, but returns after a short moment as the other character. Isn't that exactly the scenario, we were joking about yesterday? 'I'm sooo changeable'. That the last name of the leading actress in 'Dying City' is Brooke might just be an amusing coincidence, but again, it's well within the creative process to take ideas and inspirations from everywhere. They certainly would have looked at Andy's resumme, when they casted him, so it's very likely, that they were aware of 'Dying City'.
I don't say, we hit on the right solution with our observations (the net is full, by the way, with ideas, how Jim and Rich could be twin brothers, but as far as I know, nobody has explored the 'leftie' angle so far). It's just an interesting possibility. I'm not even sure, if I would like a solution along those very outlandish lines, but if someone had told us before, that the solution of the 'Great Games' cliffhanger would be a telephone call, which distracts Moriarty and makes him postpone the killing of Sherlock, we would probably have scoffed and called it an absurd idea.

Here's a direct link to Sherlocked's Variety Reviews Dying City for anyone interested. Here's a nice little piece of the article"
Scott, who similarly pulled off playing twins in Shinn's earlier "The Coming World," repeats what is essentially an acting trick without it appearing to be one. He shows two distinct personalities with startling economy -- largely through contrasting vocal pitches, rhythms and physical centers of gravity -- and then brilliantly blurs them to allow us to see the similarities between the men.
And here's the Variety review of "The Coming World," with Mr Scott in it from 2001.

Thank you mOr1arty, as Davina said already, you rock! maybe you should give us 'linking lessons', lol!
Nice quote, you picked, by the way!
Wow, so Andy is a bit of a specialist in portraying twins! I overlooked that piece of information.
Personally, I feel, that strenghthens the twin theory. They might have picked Andy not only because he's a terrific actor but also because of his 'twin prowess', lol!

"In the pool scene (Scandal) Moriarty seems to be righthanded because he acts as I - as a rightie - would do, namely holding the phone in my left hand and clicking fingers with my right. Doing so the other way round would be difficult for me."
I just rewatched the poolscene of 'Scandal' on my dvd, and Jim operates the phone SOLELY with his left hand, which means, he holds it in his left hand AND he does the clicking with his left hand - which is just the OPPOSITE way of the guy in the TOWER, who operates the phone solely with his right hand.
Did I misunderstand you somehow, tobeornot221b, or do we have different material? What I see, seems to strenghthen the argument, that we are dealing with two different guys here.
Offline
By "clicking fingers" I believe tobeornot221b is referring to him summoning his henchmen with a finger-snap
Offline
I can snap my fingers either right or left handed. Can't everyone?
Offline
Well, I can snap fingers with both of my hands equally well, but, as a leftie I sure could not operate my phone solely with my right hand, or only very, very clumsily.
But for me it's striking, that the guy at the pool operates his phone solely with his left hand, while the guy at the Tower operates it solely with his right hand.
Since the huge majority of people have a hand preference, I don't think, it's just an actor's quirk, which went unnoticed.
