Re: sherlock series 4 (spoilers inside)

Did I get it right: the 125 years old spoiler refers to the six Thatchers/Napoleons?

Well, didn't they also say that the first episode will deal with something from Mary's past? So everything is not necessarily a-ok with Mary.

But I also wondered about the "new team at Baker Street" - have the Watsons moved in?

I know what you mean, and I am sure they are aiming at that. It's just that the Watson family bliss is nothing sweet for me.

I am glad to know that I am not the only one who feels like that. :-)

At least Sherlock still looks Sherlock-y:

Re: sherlock series 4 (spoilers inside)

It was really nice for me to see the 'real' Sherlock as we know him... I'm intrigued about the scruffy Sherlock, and the tanned strange one from the teaser... but yeah, I have to admit I've had a little trouble recognizing 'my' Sherlock. until now...

I'm such a creature of habit...

Re: sherlock series 4 (spoilers inside)

Some great thoughts from you all while I've been away!   If you don't mind, Ewige, I'm going to quote your transcript, because it makes it easier to see what I'm referring to.   I think that as it's a spoiler thread, and the video has been posted, it's OK to take it out of spoilers.  Thank you very much for doing it!

ewige wrote:

But now for series 4 of Sherlock we are returning to contemporary London where we all belong.

This bit made me laugh, because last time they told us it was Victorian, and it ended up being flashback/mind palace.   Which implies that because this time they're telling us it's contemporary, it'll end up being flashforward/mind palace from Victorian times!

Well. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are back in the Baker Street as is Mrs Mary Watson, and there is a new arrival in form of a baby.

Yes, he could mean all four are living there, for a while at least, and it does sound like it.   But it's rather odd that they would all just move in together - I suspect it must still be plot related and this is part of Mary's past catching up with her.

So we have a new team in Baker Street, maybe we could have called it The Adventure of the Three Watsons, but we haven't.

"A new team" is ambiguous.  It clearly can't mean all four of them, and Sherlock isn't a Watson, but I don't see the baby being much use as a team member at present.  This could be misdirection.  However, it does look like the baby is going to feature in Ep1, and not just in mind palace.  (Although that's always still a possibility!).

We've called it The Adventure of the Six Thatchers. There's a clue there if you know your Arthur Conan Doyle.

I think the clue just means that they are referencing The Six Napoleons and one of the other spoilers suggested a similar story.

You could go back to the original story and find out precisely as much or as little as you want to.

My guess is that "as little" suggests that they are going to take the story in a very different direction, and that the original isn't going to tell us as much as it might seem.

And a certain thing which came to fruition in this episode which we've been building for an awfully long time, hundred twenty-five year old spoiler - see what you can make of that.

Now, this is really interesting to me!   Yes, Schmeizi, he does seem to be referring to Ep1, doesn't he?  And not Ep3.  So I can see why people are going for Mary's death, as that's around when she disappeared.  It does seem to me to refer to Sherlock stories published 125 years ago (not clear how precise and whether that means 1891 or 1892).   The Six Napoleons (and The Final Problem, and The Empty Hearse, with Sherlock returning after Reichenbach), was published later, so it's probably not that.    But perhaps Mark doesn't mean to be so precise with the time.

I'm really curious because I thought the thing they had been building up would come to fruition in Ep3, not Ep1.  So that shows how much I know!  I'm very excited for Ep1 now!

Well, Sherlock and John and Mary are tested as never before, they are put through an emotional wringer leading into episode two which is based on the Arthur Conan Doyle's The Adventure of the Dying Detective, now called The Adventure of the Lying Detective - two minutes and fifteen seconds - starring the great Toby Jones as Culverton Smith, one of the scariest baddies we've ever had and probably one of the scariest baddies ever committed to the television screen.

Nothing that we didn't really know here, except that I'd wondered if Mary would not be featuring much after Ep1.  This implies that she's still very much part of the story of Ep2.  Very excited for Toby!

Episode 2 is an extraordinary emotional punch in the guts. I think it's quite unlike anything we've done before and I'm very very proud of it.

This is more interesting. I think we know it's going to be emotional, judging from Setlock, but I think this episode's setlock also had a different "feel" and Mark confirms that it's different to what went before.

Leading to the episode 3, which we don't have a title for yet - yes we do but we're not telling you 'cause it's something of a give away.

Something of a giveaway ... I suppose TFP is, except that that story has already been done.  I did wonder if they were going to use the title for a completely different story, but this suggests not.  It also suggests that it's Moriarty-related (and we know Moriarty is in it - there's no secret there).

It's a combination of everything we've been building up for for the past six years of Sherlock.

Hold on, wasn't that Ep1?  I can't keep up!  Anyway, this could be a continuation of whatever comes to fruition in Ep1, or something new.  I suspect there will be some overarching series storyline.

All kinds of clues and red herrings - one minute to go - finally paid off in episode 3, which features lots of extraordinary things I can't tell you anything about, but possibly things will never be the same again. But in the next thirty seconds perhaps I can speculate on how they might alter. Sherlock will come to a shattering climax, like a great piece of music, I hope. Whether there will be another concert to enjoy - who knows. We all certainly'd like to.

This is very similar to what Benedict said - the feeling of an ending, of something difficult to come back from.   I'm very curious about how they are going to create that and what exactly changes.

I think series 4 of Sherlock is the best one we've done. I'm very proud of it. I think everybody is on top of their form and I think it's going to be quite something. God bless.

I don't think he'd be likely to say it's the second best, even if it was.  But this still makes me very excited!

I love this one:
"Uhh, it’s a culmination of everything we’ve been building up for for the last six years of Sherlock, all kinds of clues and red herrings (One minute to go) are finally paid off in episode three."

Overarching narrative for the whole show. Clues and red herrings. Culmination. I have a feeling where this might lead.

YESSS!

NOOO!!!  Please, not a slash series!  That would spoil the whole TV show.  Besides, that's not canon anyway; In the original ACD stories and on the TV show, Sherlock and John have been closer than brothers from the start; as a character said in a very good fanfiction story I've read, they're brothers-in-arms.

As long as there's no cruel cliffhanger at the end of Episode 3 this time!

Would you stop watching the show in that case?

BTW, I think the "it's not canon" argument lost its power with baby Watson, and Moriarty killing himself, and Sherlock taking a man's life, and the appearance of Sherlock's parents and Molly. ;-)

Yay to ewige's idea. :-)))

Re: sherlock series 4 (spoilers inside)

I wonder what people imagine when they dread a Johnlock resolution. Like, do they think the show is suddenly going to become 90 minutes of John and Sherlock making out and having sex? Do they think the writers are suddenly going to change their characters into touchy-feely sex fiends onscreen? Is that what people are seriously afraid will happen?

The temptation there is to say "not that that would be a bad thing..." but realistically, we all know that's a ridiculous thing to fear, because no matter where they're taking this, they're not going to suddenly turn the show into a porno. Literally nothing will change, except there being an open declaration of the love that's already visible to the naked eye onscreen.

I honestly don't see how it could "ruin the entire show" considering how the entire show, so far, has been exactly about John and Sherlock's relationship with each other.

This is exactly why I think that Moftiss will handle whatever relationship developments they are going to show us delicately. While I also agree with GimmeCat in the sense that an open declaration would change nothing (in my eyes), any sexual stuff might not be the climax of their relationship since they are already so much more than a usual couple.
My little shipper heart is just happy that there will be A development. I trust the showrunners to run the show. Can't really do anything about it either way
