Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

I'm not sure if this one has already been recommended (kittyhawk mentions Paula Douglas and Owlcroft above, so perhaps she has), but this one deserves more reads and kudos for the in-character portrayals of Sherlock and John plus a good case to boot.

The Colour of Wine (14504 words) by owlcroft
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Sherlock (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Summary:

Sherlock and John are both on record as believing the other to be "the best and wisest man" he has ever known. In this story John demonstrates his wisdom by asking something very particular of Sherlock, and Sherlock demonstrates a bit of his own with his answer. Oh, and he solves a murder, too. Set between A Scandal in Belgravia and The Hound of Baskerville.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

Yes, that's a nice story. But my personal Owlcroft favourite is the one with the trained politician and the cormorant (http://archiveofourown.org/works/3183479) - a lovely, angst-free, funny holiday adventure.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

I just read that one yesterday and loved it. Such brilliant descriptions of the locations, I felt like I was really there. Now I'm reading The Blue Carboy.

The Holiday (18962 words) by Scriblit
Chapters: 9/9
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings, Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Characters: Sherlock Holmes, John Watson, Mycroft Holmes, Mrs. Hudson, Greg Lestrade, Molly Hooper, Mary Morstan, ACD Canon Characters
Additional Tags: Adventure of the Devil's Foot, Adventure of the Illustrious Client
Summary:
A month following an horrific, sadistic attack during a case, Sherlock is still physically incapacitated and emotionally damaged. A holiday is suggested, but even stuck out in the middle of nowhere, he and John happen upon a case that could make Sherlock begin to feel like his old self again - or could kill him.

BBC Sherlock Reworking of ACD's Devil's Foot, with Illustrious Client in flashbacks. Scenes of violence and implied "off screen" sexual violence/sexual assault.
--

This was a brilliantly-written, believable case fic, somehow combining two ACD story adaptations, pitch-perfect dialogue and characterisations, the most evil villain ever, humour, action, bad-assery, poignancy, and clever use of flashbacks, all entwined seamlessly with the BBC Sherlock canon. I'm left feeling a little sad and disturbed, but very impressed with this writer.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

This story is a prequel to A Study in Scarlet.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4029558/1/On-Afghanistan-s-Plains

And this post-Hiatus story is a sequel to the story above.

I highly recommend them both!  Pompey wrote them; they're posted on Fanfiction.net.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

Just want to add that I love how, in On Afghanistan's Plains, Pompey solves the problem of whether Dr. Watson got shot in the shoulder or the foot.  In her story, he gets shot in both!  I think she did a great job of resolving that continuity problem in ACD's stories.

Re: fic recommendations - non-slash

sgam76 has answered in "With a Little Help From My Friends" https://archiveofourown.org/works/11028765/chapters/24580365 some of the questions I had asked in the Euros Holmes thread regarding her incarceration and development. Great story (both writing and content), just like the rest of the rather Mycroft-centric series.
